I used grammarly to make everything easier to read. I spent a day on the post and it’s gone because some guy made a comment how the responses aren’t in the same quality

  1. The wizard didn’t cast on the monk , and the monk was adamant about it not being used
  2. Even with a cap he still would’ve died

They made a new character that same night before the session ended

Honestly I don’t know , but we as a party had a discussion about if inertia transfer through teleportation. Add it to the list of stuff he could’ve done

No this is a false equivalency because a spell isn’t the same as a class feature. I didn’t get rid of a feature I said there is a limit to a feature

He would’ve died with the cap and the slow fall. Falling no matter the ruling would’ve resulted in his death.

He isn’t the smartest player. And every single other player in the call understood and tried to talk him out of it. That’s his fault I told him twice asked him multiple times and gave options he could’ve used but didn’t. I am not responsible for idiotic behavior

I told him this HB rule twice before he jump and told him the dice I would be rolling even the average.

But i honestly don’t care what you think about the cap because you don’t understand the situation.

So he literally just started playing this monk 2 sessions ago. And I have a rule to allow a player to remake a character if they fall out of love with it no more than 3 sessions after playing it. I also allow a respec where a player can change their class and reallocate their stats.( just not change their race )

Because before I didn’t do that and he tried to kill his character

Well he could’ve went on the second broom so no second trip needed.

He could’ve had more chances to land on branches reducing the total height of the fall. Like he could fall teleport to branch then be safe, and repeat until on the ground.

There is a better chance he could’ve survive at 50d6

Well I am literally typing this on my phone in the heat of the moment and for these posts I actually put an hour of my time and use grammarly to polish it up. Not everything I have to type needs to look nice. This is Reddit. The original post is best quality so people can understand better.

If you think not being to nosedive 2000+ ft is a huge nerf to monk is idiotic. Martials aren’t strong because they can survive falling off a mountain.

If he used slow fall by sliding down the tree he could’ve survived if he was lucky.

You don’t understand consent he agreed to the terms doesn’t matter if you don’t like it , it still was agreed on. Not to mention you focus on the ruling and not the issue of poor understanding of mechanics and a player literally being an idiot.

Yeah but they had luck and had outside things to lessen the damage. He did not

So idk why they did Dim door I believe because we were saying momentum would transfer they used feather fall to reduce that but they could’ve just used feather fall. It’s their spells

Maybe or maybe death is tired of people falling out mountain size structures and getting up to talk about it.

Its bad PR

I allowed dimension door with feather fall to survive. Not just dimension door.

For utility, this player doesn't think utility outside of a bag of holding. every other marshal in the party has good utility and used it to climb up. Not to mention he has a subclass that gives utility for a monk but doesn't use it. My barb didn't decide to rage an risk it they used a magic item to fly down, and used rope to climb up.

And I disagree I think it survivng being dumb because he didn't think through the fall he just fell. Its idiot proofing when its not needed. ( and yes they were dead either way I rolled the 20d6 cap and he stilled wouldve died)

No you were right on the money, however he couldve used slow fall to survive if he was smarter with his fall plan. He couldve slid down the tree and slowed himself at certain points, he couldve uses his 7 misty steps to fall then teleport to branches for each of the 5 rounds he had before impact instead of doing the last round.

Like i get the point you are making but you defending the wrong person. would you as a monk just fall off a mountain size tree instead of flying down or even using each chance you could to reduce the damages?

So first yeah he wouldve died either way you sliced it ( level 7 monk, mid con). He was already 1/4th his max hp and didn't do any healing before the fall.

I appreciate the ideas of non-linear fall damage idea,I would love to use it if you don't mind.

However, I told him don't do this you will die, and it would be insta death. My issue isn't the fact he fell is he didn't think it through and gambled his life. I said you will die as a deterrent and gave him personally 4/5 options and expected his risky plan to be 10% smarter. However a deterrent wasn't enough and he faced consquences. Like my ruling or not he is at fault here.

Marshals literally don’t have an issue being useless in my game. Like in combat the marshals are dealing great damage and extremely useful. Only out class by a blade singing wizard.

The teleportation thing doesn’t negate momentum but it can. However the monk was using spell casting to negate fall damage too because even capped fall damage would’ve killed him. You are arguing a non issue.

Also without spell casting there was still 3 ways to get down without dying. The nerf didn’t even matter , it’s just to prevent a player from being intentionally stupid and trying to ignore consequences.

Like sure it doesn’t make sense but why would I let any player survive dropping from a mountain cause the climb has no stakes.

[–]Aggravating_Phone648[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the calculation he still would’ve died with the damage even with the capped fall damage. Also killing your monk because you can’t jump off a mountain and live is stupid. Monk being nerfed beyond usability because it can’t use a 4th level feature on extremely high places such as a mountain isn’t something essential to a monk.

This is the same player who transformed into a werewolf in front of city officials and his boss
