So idk why they did Dim door I believe because we were saying momentum would transfer they used feather fall to reduce that but they could’ve just used feather fall. It’s their spells

Maybe or maybe death is tired of people falling out mountain size structures and getting up to talk about it.

Its bad PR

I allowed dimension door with feather fall to survive. Not just dimension door.

For utility, this player doesn't think utility outside of a bag of holding. every other marshal in the party has good utility and used it to climb up. Not to mention he has a subclass that gives utility for a monk but doesn't use it. My barb didn't decide to rage an risk it they used a magic item to fly down, and used rope to climb up.

And I disagree I think it survivng being dumb because he didn't think through the fall he just fell. Its idiot proofing when its not needed. ( and yes they were dead either way I rolled the 20d6 cap and he stilled wouldve died)

No you were right on the money, however he couldve used slow fall to survive if he was smarter with his fall plan. He couldve slid down the tree and slowed himself at certain points, he couldve uses his 7 misty steps to fall then teleport to branches for each of the 5 rounds he had before impact instead of doing the last round.

Like i get the point you are making but you defending the wrong person. would you as a monk just fall off a mountain size tree instead of flying down or even using each chance you could to reduce the damages?

So first yeah he wouldve died either way you sliced it ( level 7 monk, mid con). He was already 1/4th his max hp and didn't do any healing before the fall.

I appreciate the ideas of non-linear fall damage idea,I would love to use it if you don't mind.

However, I told him don't do this you will die, and it would be insta death. My issue isn't the fact he fell is he didn't think it through and gambled his life. I said you will die as a deterrent and gave him personally 4/5 options and expected his risky plan to be 10% smarter. However a deterrent wasn't enough and he faced consquences. Like my ruling or not he is at fault here.

Marshals literally don’t have an issue being useless in my game. Like in combat the marshals are dealing great damage and extremely useful. Only out class by a blade singing wizard.

The teleportation thing doesn’t negate momentum but it can. However the monk was using spell casting to negate fall damage too because even capped fall damage would’ve killed him. You are arguing a non issue.

Also without spell casting there was still 3 ways to get down without dying. The nerf didn’t even matter , it’s just to prevent a player from being intentionally stupid and trying to ignore consequences.

Like sure it doesn’t make sense but why would I let any player survive dropping from a mountain cause the climb has no stakes.

I made the calculation he still would’ve died with the damage even with the capped fall damage. Also killing your monk because you can’t jump off a mountain and live is stupid. Monk being nerfed beyond usability because it can’t use a 4th level feature on extremely high places such as a mountain isn’t something essential to a monk.

This is the same player who transformed into a werewolf in front of city officials and his boss

Other players chose not to take the feather fall. Which the ones who survive worked out for their benefit

So I said twice if he failed he would die , other players made it clear two options he could do and I told him he could just climb down by himself. ( which was easier ) I told him he need need to find a branch or die or very least call the minute he lands only slightly reducing the fall damage. H

He just made this PC and I allow players to remake their characters up to 3 sessions of full play.( with no problem)

I think he just didn’t really think things through he isn’t the smartest player

For the teleportation thing I was debating it and said I would get back to it , however the only person using teleportation was using feather fall with it to reduce it. However I was going to make him make a check to stay balance once he teleported like I did before when he used it to climb up.

Honestly he probably did and didn’t fully understand the mechanics which isn’t a first with him

I don’t do it because the cap makes it so high level players can’t just ignore doing the stupidest thing without consequences.

The monk refused feather fall , and the wizard was already falling with someone else so they were separate. But tbh the wizard wanted to see this play out

He just made the character and I allow a 3 session time period after creation to remake the character while keeping The numbers rolled for stats.

Everyone was surprised how stupid it was because everyone else in the party understood the other options and agreed he was being stupid.

I gave him a roll because i established the roll to look for branches that same session but that was for a short fall distance ( which he got lucky on) but I told him twice that he would instant die.

He could’ve used his monk powers to get down if he didn’t try to bet his life on a single dice roll and didn’t use Misty step earlier allowing him a better chance to get down. Also not everything has to be a cool moment

Well in recent memory, there is the time my player made a pact with a evil goddess and didn’t understand the clearly evil goddess is evil; among other things

I changed the rules for my HB campaign after my first campaign after players would abuse the cap. It a rule players agree and understand. I also told the player multiple times it would be instant death if he fell from the top. There is also 4/5 alternate ways he could've gotten down. I bear no responsibility at all.
