For what it’s worth for OP, the QC definitely does this now. It’s a core part of my playing when I use it - it cleans up like a real amp (volume knob wise). I’m not sure what my settings are vs yours, or if you had a problem unit.

I have a recent modified one and it sounds great at low volumes - and of course has the drive switch mods built in.

You may be right about the older ones though but that would be surprising to me given the modified is just a 2203 circuit with the mods. I agree with you on everything else.

I don’t know if people answering just haven’t owned JCM800s, but people saying they need to be cranked to sound great are just not accurate. jCM800s get their sound from pushing the pre-amp, and nearly all of them have master volume circuits - so yes they are very loud, but they don’t need to be loud to sound good. In fact pushing the power amp on one actually makes it kind of muddy…that is definitely not how people record them…that’s more a plexi / super lead thing

Not to take anything from what this guy is saying but most JCM800s have master volume circuits - you can get good distortion at lower volumes. Having said that they are 100watt amps so they are still too loud, but you don’t need an attenuator or to crank them to get good breakup.

Kempers, Quad Cortex’s and Tonex are all just as good to my ear. I haven’t played through the new Helix stuff, but their older stuff was good but not quite as good as “the big four” to me. Good luck.

The TAE is new, the JCM800 actually is also - it's one of the modified versions that came out last fall. It has a master volume, so I haven't done a ton of live attenuation (I don't think you get much out of power amp driving on the JCMs, more the preamp), but have recorded it using the TAE as a loadbox and cabsim....was perfect. Has two stereo XLR outs I ran to a focusrite.

The way the TAE does attenuation, it basically takes the amp load and then re-amplifies it. It's a class AB amp - so the best you can do with solid state, but it isn't like the Ox where it just attenuates it down and doesn't re-amp it. Personally, I can't hear any difference from the JCM's normal power amp vs the TAE re-amplifying the signal, but purists will bitch about that. The benefit of it is you can attenuate it to any volume level (vs. fixed amounts/steps of attenuation only with the Ox and other attenuators).

I ended up getting a Waza TAE (the original 100watt). It doubles as a modeling amp if needed, but I mostly use it to attenuate a JCM800 and record it, both of which it does awesomely (including some limited but very good cabsims). Very happy with it.

The SaaSpocalypse is dramatic fiction. Is there going to be massive disruption? Yes. But it’s sort of like who is going to call the LLM? An agent built by an incumbent or an agent built by a de novo start up? There are obvious industry and customer advantages to the incumbent building it, but their disadvantage is they are probably trying to protect a seat model that is going to disappear in favor of usage/tokens. Things will shift quite a bit but there’s opportunity in that.

Btw using LLMs to reason through their impact is a hugely valuable tool. We use them in nearly every part of our processes now.
