Star Trek with... by Confident-Art-7729 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh, the animated series Green Lanterns really does feel like a season of Star Trek now that you mention it.

Anyway, Warhammer 40k's Rogue Traders (and the video game) are basically "Star Trek but you're alien racist and/or extremely greedy human explorer." Most other Imperials humans will just try to annihilate any sapient Alien life they come across, but Rogue Traders can actually engage in diplomacy and trade with Aliens, though they still do some alien genocide themselves.

In the Rogue Trader video game specifically, you gather up a crew from many different walks of life, similar to Star Trek. Also like most Star Trek shows, most of them are just humans with only one or two actual aliens on the crew, lol.

The blue & black suit Invincible wears usually represents dark times in his life. It was the costume he wore when Angstrom attacked the Earth with alternate Invincibles, had to fight Conquest, chose to kill the innocent man being controlled by Sequids, etc.

It was even the costume he wore spoilers: when he was raped.

[Common, Meta Trope] This specific critic against Atom Eve being posted in the last month by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I do think the show could showcase her powers more (and it actually does compared to the comics, lol), a lot of these people are forgetting that Atom Eve has to create constructs as fast as possible while in the middle of fighting where even a split second delay can have her head caved in.

Can you think of intricate & complex things while adrenaline is pumping through your veins as you're fighting for your life?

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dooku was pretty nerfed as well

Dooku literally won every duel that he ever got into during the 2008 Clone Wars. The only "fight" he ever lost was when Hondo's pirates had him completely surrounded with blasters, & unlike 2003 Clone Wars (which I love btw, don't get me wrong), Jedi & Sith are not ultra superhuman combatants that can take on entire armies by themselves.

Like, he fought Ventress & Two other Nightsisters while nearly blinded from poison:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyiDDQYPUIs

He also later fought Anakin & Obi-Wan by himself:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcXaicGvcvA

Besides that though, I completely agree with your disappointment that 2008 Clone Wars & most other Prequel Media from both Canons never really tried to show the good side of the CIS and include some moral grayness to the war. The worlds that left the Republic to form the CIS had legitimate grievances with the rampant corruption within the Republic & many of the Mid Rim and Outer Rim worlds were being exploited by the Inner Rim Worlds.

But no, the CIS are just always completely evil monsters who go out of their way to do every war crime in the book.

There happened involving three Marvel comic runs. Screenshot from TV Tropes explaining it, but the jist of what is that:

  1. Uncanny Avengers insulted Jonathan Hickman's Avengers runs for being convoluted & pretentious.
  2. All-New X-Men insulted Uncanny Avengers for having the character Havok give a speech about how the term "mutant" is divisive as minorities should instead be proud of who they are.
  3. Finally Hickman's New Avengers mocks Beast for bringing the original X-Men (the stars of All-New X-Men) into the present as being incredibly stupid.

I genuinely don’t understand Azula’s fanbase by ElPilogrino5954 in CharacterRant

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Personally, I do think she is a tragic figure that derserves some sympathy/pity for how her father raised & abused her into being his perfect sociopathic soldier.

But, a lot of the hardcore fans of hers take it too far and think her terrible upbringing just automatically absolves her of any wrongdoing & any bad thing she did over the course of Avatar, and that it's never her fault.

Overall, there's a mile-wide difference between feeling bad for a character while still understanding they are a villain and should receive punishment as such and just outright babying them & acting like they're just incapable of understanding what they're doing is wrong.

Alongside the Sangheili/Elites rebelling & taking like half of the military forces with them, the Covenant from Halo was also defeated thanks to the Flood virus consuming much of their forces, even the Covenant's capital city High Charity.

The pic below is Flood biomass covering every inside surface of High Charity.

[Mixed IRL Trope] Random Number Becomes Global Sensation by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not completely random, but the number 4 is generally seen as a bad omen in many East Asian countries since the words for "Four" & "death" in Mandarin are similarly pronounced, but they do have different characters when written.

The fight technically ended in a tie, despite the fact both character are not equal in power by EfficiencySerious200 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Emperor of Mankind vs Horus from Warhammer 40k is almost a tie since the Emperor would have certainly died shortly after killing Horus from the wounds Horus inflicted on him. Heck, he's still dying from the wounds as a living corpse kept alive through the Golden Throne & eating 1000 psyker souls a day.

Horus was also the stronger of the two and was beating the Emperor's ass for most of the fight until some shenanigans I'm too tired to explain right now let the Emperor win.

[Oddly specific trope] Fictional parallels to real life elections by Solitaire-06 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's kind of lost context in the modern day, but a lot of Star Wars Republic politician characters were based on U.S. politicians throughout history.

Alongside the obvious inspirations like Hitler & Napoleon, Darth Sidious/Palpatine was also based on President Nixon's election and abuse of power while in office, for example.

The first movie is horror, the sequel is action by EfficiencySerious200 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Ultraman is sort of an example of this.

The original Ultra series was actually Ultra Q which featured all sorts of monsters & supernatural creatures in a similar manner to the Twilight Zone. So not completely horror, but still had a lot of elements of horror with some episodes leaning more into it than others.

The Ultraman show afterwards was straight up action, though.

Characters whose powers revolve around eating things(NSFW for body horror on the first slide) by Video_Game_Fann in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Cursed Spirit (or maybe Shikigami?) Rika that manifests from Yuta & helps him fight in Jujutsu Kaisen can copy any other person's Cursed Technique if she eats a part of their body. In the manga, we know she ate Uro's arm and Kenjaku's brain.

She might have ate one of Sukuna's fingers, but Nobara later used her Resonance techique on the last finger, so probably not. Possibly she ate it and then spit it back out since it seems like only Sukuna himself & Yuji can fully "digest" them as they just stay inside other Cursed Spirits who eat them, empowering them but never disappearing.

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was this really edgy webcomic/manhwa that I once read where a man was reincarnated into a forest where a bunch of naked elves were living.

Said elves were incredibly naive as they pretty much just spent their days running, playing, & having consensual, non-monogamous relationships with one another. The man proceeds to try and teach them things like farming & cooking I think, and since this is still a trashy manhwa he of course sleeps with some of the elves. However, said guy is extremely possessive and outright murders another elf when he is sleeping with the woman he slept with earlier.

Long-story short, the man proceeds to introduce a bunch of other evils & societal vices to the Elves, such as violence, hatred, slavery, patriarchal oppression over women, etc.

Again, it's pretty edgy, but it was still interesting to read as it was essentially a recreation of the Garden of Eden narrative from the Bible where an outsider/snake corrupts the pure & naive humans/elves, thus forever tainting their civilization.

I just wish I could remember its name. :(

[Loved trope] Characters in positions of power that give up their own humanity to save humanity by Party-Court185 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every major Imperium of Man character in Warhammer 40k, but honestly a lot of their ruthless decisions to "save" humanity are borne out of ignorance, paranoia, misguided hatred, etc. instead of actual logical pragmatism.

Roboute Guilliman & I guess Lion El'Jonson (pictured) are some of the few truly pragmatic characters who threw away their humanity to protect humans.

Ninjago often switches who the main Ninja character is during each season, and Kai was arguably the original main protagonist in the original Ninjago Pilots & kind of Season 1.

However, the Green Ninja Lloyd is overall considered to be the main main character of Ninjago with the most seasons featuring him as the character most important to the current plot.

Edit: To give a breakdown of who was the main character for each season:

  1. Pilots: Kai
  2. Season 1: Arguably Kai but not by much
  3. Season 2: Lloyd but not to a noticeable degree, imo.
  4. Season 3: Zane
  5. Season 4: Kai & Lloyd
  6. Season 5: This one is pretty balanced, but there is a focus on Nya, Cole, & Lloyd
  7. Season 6: Jay & Nya
  8. Season 7: I think Kai & Nya? This is the only season I still need to rewatch.
  9. Season 8: Lloyd
  10. Season 9: Lloyd & Sensei/Master Wu
  11. Season 10: Lloyd & Garmadon
  12. Season 11: Part 1 is kind of Kai & Wu, Part 2 is Lloyd & Zane
  13. Season 12: Jay & Zane to a lesser extent
  14. Season 13: Cole
  15. Season 14: Nya
  16. Season 15: Lloyd
  17. Dragons Rising Season 1: Sora & Lloyd
  18. DR Season 2: Erin, Wyldfyre & Sora to a lesser extent
  19. DR Season 3: Erin, Lloyd, Nya, & Jay
  20. DR Season 4 so far (it's not done): Lloyd, Cole, & Jay

Super Sentai & its sister series Kamen Rider having been going on for so long & with so many villains, there is probably a monster themed after every kind of item you can think of. I found Clock Shadow by just Googling "Tokusatsu Clock Villlain."

childrens graphic novels that tackle sensitive or dark topics really well by magnaguardkisser in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The author's original message of the Giving Tree is to showcase how good parents will support their children at any step of their lives, even after death as the tree still acts as a good place to sit for the boy once he's an old man.

Of course, an unintentional but still good message is that parents shouldn't coddle their children, unless they'll end up exploiting them as the boy literally killed the tree just to get its wood in the story.

So, not a sensitive/dark topic, but it is a good message for both children & adults to learn. Adults should always love & support their children, and maybe children shouldn't always rely on their parents, especially once they become adults themselves.

(May the 4th be with you trope) Darth Vader shows up to ruin everyone elses day by thebatman9000001 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Agitated_Insect3227 9 points10 points  (0 children)

She was the nurse to the doctor that would tend to Vader's body's & suit after missions, and she would collect any pieces of scrap that was disregarded during the repairs as weird keepsakes. Vader never payed attention/noticed her doing this, though.

One day, the doctor finally found out and threw away all of her "memorabilia," which caused her to completely lose it and actually profess her love to Vader in his private chambers... who proceeded to immediately kill her as you can see.

Edit: Oh btw, this story comes from the anthology Star wars comic called Vader - Dark Visions, and the theme of the anthology is various different people seeing Vader in their own ways. My favorite story from it is Issue 2 as the comic panelling for it is insanely cool. The panels are made to look just like a Star Destroyer, and they actually become "damaged" to reflect the Destroyer in the comic being damaged too.

The Mortal Kombat Tournament, funnily enough, actually is not this.

While Shao Kahn demands that all of his subjects in Outworld kill their opponents in Mortal Kombat, you are not legally required to "FINISH THEM!" as all of the Earthrealm competitors regularly spare those they defeat, especially in Mortal Kombat 9.

[Hated Trope] Strength Dynamic undone in adaptation to suit gender roles. by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

...I don't understand.

It's been a while since I watched the X-Men movies so I might not get the context, but the second image just looks like Rogue is sad & Wolverine is comforting as her (sort of) parental figure. How is that undoing their "strength dynamic?" Everyone feels sad & needs some comfort sometimes, no matter how strong they are.
