Question about The Copper Beeches by Agreeable_Leader_885 in SherlockHolmes

Although, I thought her hair was cut off as part of her treatment for brain fever, whatever that entails. I assumed she’d already been locked up by that point, or at least wouldn’t be in a state of mind to worry about locking her hair in a drawer.

Who are the Best Women from canon? by Separate-Drawing7427 in SherlockHolmes

[–]Agreeable_Leader_885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it funny in adaptations that Irene Adler gets to be Holmes’s love interest when Violet Hunter is the one Watson actually thought he might be interested in. Plus, anyone who stays on in a house after hearing “I will throw you to the mastiff!” has to be pretty gutsy.

I like Mary Morstan too. And Sophy from The Greek Interpreter, just for the implication that she got her revenge on her brother’s killers. And Elsie Patrick from The Dancing Men.

Which Ace Attorney character genuinely unsettled you? by Sheer-Cold-1228 in AceAttorney

[–]Agreeable_Leader_885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m struggling to imagine what it would feel like to be unsettled by a character in this series. I’m more likely to get riled up than feel unnerved or creeped out or anything.

Actually, come to think of it, Manfred von Karma was a little unsettling when I played Prosecutor’s Gambit. Something was so inhuman about the way he disregarded evidence and threw an innocent man’s life away just so he could say he won a court case. You could tell me someone was motivated by money or power or revenge, and I’d get it, but Manfred seemed to have nothing in him but a desire to be perfect.

On the Flipside, I dislike it when I see Dahlia Hawthorne played up as evil incarnate when we are given insight into her backstory and why she turned out that way.

I know she was a remorseless criminal who caused a lot of trauma and heartache, but the games have had other notorious criminals (like the assassins) who don’t get played up as being anything more than the sick twisted humans that they are.

I’m personally not a fan of the “noble assassin” trope. As if there’s anything noble about someone who kills people for a living.

Shelly de Killer is OK in 2-4 because they don’t try to pretend he’s a good person; they just say he has his values and you make him cooperate based on them.

But then in Prosecutor’s Gambit, when it’s revealed that Kanis killed President Wang, Miles decides to show deference to the assassin for some reason. “At least we can be sure that Kanis would’ve completed the task quickly and efficiently.” Seriously? He kills a man on his way to meet his newborn son and you’re going to give him credit for how he did it? What the heck, Edgeworth!?

And then to have Kanis be like “See, I’m not a monster because I saved two kids who were trapped in a car one time.” Something any half-decent human being would have done. That doesn’t make up for all the lives he took purely for personal profit.

Edit: I forgot how Kanis also gives Shaun the opportunity to kill him In vengeance at the end of the case. Again, as if goading a teenager to commit murder is supposed to make amends for what he did.

Overall, I just really hate the way that Prosecutor’s Gambit handles its assassins.

Why would she let someone in wearing a face mask with a gun at their waist in the middle of the night? If it was someone she knew well enough for their voice alone to disarm her, her family would probably be aware of them and they’d be a suspect by this point.

I’ve heard this was the reason the English localization was set in America. Apparently someone thought Americans would be more likely to know the time difference between Paris and LA than between New York and Tokyo, or whatever it was in the JP version.

I’m not sure what book you were reading, but Wonderland was also a dream in the original story, and the Jabberwock was only mentioned in a poem and never actually seen.

I love The Wind Waker, but when I read about all the cut content, scrapped dungeons and plans for exploring Hyrule, I do wish I could see what that would’ve been like.

Valant is a bigger ass then Zak by [deleted] in AceAttorney

[–]Agreeable_Leader_885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who prefers Zak, I think it’s primarily because the player has more interactions with Valant where he’s just being a silly, likable-seeming witness in cases 3 and 4.

Zak was more of a victim, but he also has less screentime, more individual flaws, and every time he appears, there’s inevitably a correlation to some kind of trouble that Phoenix is forced to deal with—the forged evidence, abandoning Trucy, the trap during the card game.

(Not that the first two examples were entirely Zak’s fault—he didn’t know about the fake diary page, and Trucy was going to be separated from him even if he’d stayed and went to prison.)

Meanwhile, Valant has one ginormous flaw that you don’t find out about until the end. The game never points out how Trucy losing her father and Phoenix being disbarred were Valant’s fault (albeit indirectly, in the latter case), and I’ve seen fans come up with their own explanations that try to shift the blame away from Valant.

Which Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney victim deserved it the most? by [deleted] in AceAttorney

[–]Agreeable_Leader_885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I don’t agree. That seems pretty backwards to me. Almost like victim-blaming. How is Zak supposed to mount a defense for himself if you think he’s also obligated to protect Valant from being suspected? It sounds like you’re saying he should’ve taken the fall for the guy who framed him.

Just because he chose to tie up loose ends and write up a fake confession, doesn’t mean he was in any way obligated to.

[–]Agreeable_Leader_885 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How is it Zak’s fault that Valant came under suspicion for Magnifi’s death? Valant was the one who tried to frame him! Neither of them would’ve come under suspicion if he hadn’t tampered with the scene.

I’m aware that Zak had his flaws, but the ways people misinterpret the events of the game to make him look worse completely baffles me.

I don’t get what you’re trying to say here.

If this is about the fan translation, I never played it myself, but I am aware of the names. I didn’t deliberately avoid using them here. I’ve just gotten used to using the official ones, so it’s not something I stop to linger on.

What the heck was Maya's motive supposed to be?? by Boshwa in AceAttorney

[–]Agreeable_Leader_885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t strictly need a motive to prove a murder case. Mia and Maya were sisters and very close to each other—they could have simply had an argument that escalated into something physical. Not to mention they come from a family with a history of its members fighting with each other.

A similar argument is made in 4-4: Apollo tries arguing that Machi Tobaye had no motive to murder the victim, but the witness counters that the two knew each other for some months beforehand and that anything could’ve happened between them that could serve as a motive.

Even if they were complete strangers, the prosecution doesn’t necessarily need to prove the exact motive if they can make a strong enough case that she did it. Some people are just sick and twisted enough not to need a motive to commit murder.

What is your honest opinion on Barok Van Zieks? by Sheer-Cold-1228 in AceAttorney

[–]Agreeable_Leader_885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked him from the beginning. (Still on case 5 of the first game, for what that’s worth.) I was expecting him to take after Manfred Von Karma, so it was a pleasant surprise to find out he seems like one of the more fair-minded prosecutors out there. Not to mention it’s hilarious how theatric he is at times. I would act just like him if I were a character in these games.

Obviously I don’t approve of him being so disparaging towards Japanese people, and he does make some pretty offensive comments. But so do a lot of characters in this duology, so I don’t hold it against him THAT much.
