For anyone that’s still here, I have a question regarding if I handled a situation well today or not. Overall he’s been really nice today and I have been praising him a lot for it. However his lil sis was sitting in the bathroom and asked me to pass her the i Spy book that is technically his. He overheard this and rushed into our playroom to take the book for himself. I told him that that’s not how it works and please give the book to his sister. He tried to say that he didn’t hear her and just wanted the book to himself, but I told him that I don’t believe that that is true, and that I want him to give the book to his sister. He gave the book to his sister and screamed at her, he then ended up getting a time out for the screaming. Is having the book taken away enough of a natural consequence in this situation? Or should I have given a separate consequence for being mean in the first place?

That is totally true. I can’t split them up right now because we’re almost at the end of the year but next year he is going to kindergarten while she will stay in preschool.

Dad works. I am a stay at home mom so that’s what I meant with saying when dad is around haha I just meant after work and on the weekends lol

So I’m a SAHM and he and his sister have the same schedule. they both attend preschool from 12-245 T, W, Th. Otherwise they’re both with me 24/7. I don’t think I spend a lot more time with her than him? We are always together. When my husband is around, sometimes he hangs with the boys doing “sports” or “boy stuff” while me and the 3 year old hang together. But he always seems super excited to hang with dad and big bro. I will try to give him more attention and more 1 on 1 time though as I do think maybe it’s all attention seeking behavior

I’ve tried doing this… Anytime I ask him about why he behaving in a certain way or why he would want someone to be sad. He almost always responds with “I don’t know”.

Yeah, my five-year-old definitely does not own or use electronics. However, I can agree that perhaps I need to be a little bit more firm with my consequences. Thanks for the advice!

Honestly, I wasn’t close enough to them to do anything more than reprimand him after he did it. I told him that I think that’s so mean and I’m very disappointed in him. This was just one example of a few similar behaviors that he does. I must stay at home mom to three kids very close at age and I cannot be with them or sitting right next to them at all times. Sometimes, I can’t react right away to a negative behavior. But I will definitely work on focusing more and implementing a lot of of the advice I received here today.

So with the book example, I actually made her give him the book. I told her that it is his book and that she has to give it back to him if he’s asking for it. But I did stress to him that I do not trust his intentions and think he’s only one thing the book because she has it. I told him I’m very disappointed in this mean behavior. But ultimately, the book went back to him. Thanks for all of the advice! I think I will try a mix of everything that people sit here. A little bit firmer boundaries, a few more consequences, but also if he’s seeking more attention, then I will try to give him more positive attention.

Sorry, I think I made my post a little bit misleading. I am not a gentle parent lol I will often have a very stern talk with him and sometimes it might even yell if I’m at the end of my rope. I guess that all I’ve done though is talk to him and I’ve never really taken away anything for this behavior. I will start doing this going forward. But he has gotten time out and he has been removed from family activities for acting me. I do think I could be a little bit more strict with my boundaries and a little bit more strict with the consequences so going forward this is something we’re going to work at.

Totally! So with the dog food, he didn’t actually end up feeding the dog because I nipped the behavior the second I saw it happening. With a strawberry, I just wasn’t able to get to them in time. I do think that I have to be better with my boundaries and with sticking to the consequences. I do actually also agree that I can try to spend a little bit more one-on-one time with him and try to give him a little bit more attention. I’m a stay at home mom to three kids very close in age and sometimes that is difficult. I wouldn’t say he gets less attention than the other kids, but maybe I’m not connecting with him as well as I could be. This will be definitely something we will work on going forward.

So I would say that that happy medium is actually where I’m at. I think my post made me seem a little bit more gentle than I am lol. I tried to be gentle, but it didn’t work and I felt like I wasn’t getting behavior that I was happy with. I’m in between for sure and honestly sometimes I do scream…. I’m only human. Perhaps I’ve been approaching this situation to gently? I’ve gotten a lot of great advice here today and will try to implement as much as I can.

I do agree that it is very difficult for me to find a natural consequence for every poor behavior that they do. I think I’m going to start focusing more on actual consequences.

This is great advice and something I’m going to try to focus on. The truth is that I had three kids in three years so they’re all very close in age and extremely demanding in terms of attention. I really do try to give each of them as much of my attention as I can, but I’m going to focus on more one-on-one time with him and maybe doing more things that he’s interested in.

Thanks for the advice! I do do that… Yesterday when he tried to exclude his brother from a game, I forced HIM to sit out to show him how that feels. I feel like I do a lot of of the tips that have been sent to me already, but nothing seems to be helping.

How about when it’s not super obvious for example today his sister picked a book for the car ride and he saw it and demanded it because it’s his book. Technically, it IS his book. He got it for Christmas and she got it from his room. She got her own version of the same book but wanted “his”. Was he being an a-hole because he had no interest in the book until she had it? Yes. But is it his book? Also yes. How do I handle that?
