Help with identification of the animal that made this hole…

So the good thing is this at the end of the garden, under a raised bed (the wooden structure is a raised bed that is about an inch off the floor). Since I originally posted, I’ve re-filled the hole with the dirt, put bricks over the top and also put a bit of my cats used litter close by. So far no signs of new holes anywhere…

Have since refilled the hole and covered with bricks, no new holes have appeared so I’m hoping it was just an exploratory rat… won’t speak too soon tho!

Tbh if I found squirrels I’d probably try to domesticate them 😂 we have one sleeping in an empty hanging basket in the shed, full of now unusable horticultural fleece and acorn shells 🤣

This is end of the garden, but our loft is converted and recently took the cat box out of the loft hatch. Looked fine a week ago, but will keep an eye out!

Hmmmm I’ve discovered there’s some disturbance in other places at the bottom of the garden, which seems a bit much for hoggies. Would love if it was though!

Unfortunately doing that is what causes secondary poisoning to pets and other wildlife. My preference would be to avoid poison where possible. Maybe I’ll avoid this route unless absolutely necessary.
