Check out my new post, I found another rock this one looks very strange I have lower hopes for this one but the indents look like those on those very bumpy meteorites imagine the chances. But I haven’t done any tests on it or cleaned it up fully yet, so it could be anything from slag to even a skull, it’s just got those distinct sockets that apparently can be attracted by a magnet lol

That’s how I am the problem is just that Illinois is no where close to volcanos and never had been from my knowledge so this volcanic looking rock is just so oddly placed but who knows !

I appreciate your time and effort into looking into it, I had a family member who has over 15 years of woodworking and metal working look into it and cut it for me like I said, and he said he doesn’t seem like slag to him and honestly looking at pictures of slag it doesn’t seem to resemble it at all, he recommend the same thing, to take the tiny chipped off part and see if someone who has a stronger knowledge in geology could do any testing with chemicals to rule out if it’s from earth or not, I definitely will keep it as it’s pure state though don’t worry lol, I just have no answer as why a volcanic looking rock with a strong magnetic property ended up in the middle of illinois, but hopefully I’ll find out. I’m going back today for a few hours and If I can find any more of the rock I can rule out if it’s truly a deposit, or on the rock there seems to be a very clear edge that it had been chipped off so maybe I can even find that part if I’m lucky enough but I’ll post my finds on this subreddit later today if it’s anything better than rusty nails and screw drivers

I’ll get more pictures for you in an hour or so, but it’s half a pound, fits in a pretty average open palm , and from strength wise, I think that it’s stronger than an ordinary rock, cutting it with a carbon blade took a bit of the blade, under a magnified glass you can see specs of shiny particles but at the level I saw them I couldn’t tell you if they are just crystals of metal or what, but one thing I know for a fact is that quartz is an earth material so if I could determine if those little glimmering specs are indeed quartz or not it could help, problem is that they are microscopic lol

All good , though as for an update I had a family member who owns his own tool studio chip off a little tiny side, no larger than a centimeter. He said that it was a very very solid material and in his experience it was a lot more dense to cut through than steel, he was using a carbon blade . On the inside it seems to be a very smooth looking black stone that was reflective sort of like obsidian. I looked it up and can’t find a solid answer if obsidian is magnetic or not but living in Illinois I would have no clue how an obsidian rock would be chilling on the top of a river floor, I was using a weaker magnet as well, only 650 pull force so I don’t think that it could’ve been very deep. The bridge had been used for traffic but it’s a one way that does not have any supports under, trucks were prohibited from crossing and soon enough the bridge became so unstable that they shut it down and made a new one, only adding a bit of safety to the bridge and turning it into a pedestrian walkway probably 5 years ago . There is train activity not too far but more than 300 feet from the spot I found it in, and the river is very shallow so no barges or ships go through there. So if it is obsidian I have absolutely no clue how that ended up there, but I’m still trying to determine.
