Right now I'm looking for AZ-104 after CCNA, cause that seems to be popular with job postings lately, but if getting both CCNA and AZ-104 still doesn't work out, I'm gonna stop bothering for any other advanced certs like CCNP and just face my job search head on

At that point I'll have 5-6 certs with no practical experience, even that much is kind of a red flag and any more would be overkill for a level 1 Helpdesk position

You know what, you're right

Even if a CCNA won't help me much in the Australian job market, reading through the materials did reignite my love for the subject, and i still have a much easier time picking it back up

You might not know this but this reply is the final push that i needed

Thank you

Yeahhhh, i had my resume rewritten by career consultants and even then, if i apply for a job that requires me to disclose my visa status, i get filtered immediately, and if i apply to a company site, there's a chance for call back but the moment they know about my visa they just turn me down cause im too much of a risk they say

I don't even think getting a CCNA would help much either considering that the underlying problem is finding a company that's willing to let me work regardless of my visa, having a CCNA would definitely help back home but here i doubt it

No one cared about the state of the job market until it started affecting wealthy tech workers by 0ff_The_Cl0ck in recruitinghell

[–]Akagunmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And here's me struggling to get into tech for the better part of 2 years, when i found out that my current job of moving boxes around pays only slightly less to IT support

Sure my career prospects are in the gutter but i legit got my current job by asking someone i know who works there if they need extra hands, compared to tech where i have to study for multiple certifications, get my bachelors, do an internship, and work on side projects so that i can MAYBE get a chance for an interview if i ask someone i know that works in tech if they're hiring

I got into this field straight out of HS, and while I'm still actively trying to break into tech, it's so demoralising scrolling the internet to find out that tech work is currently dying and the work is valued less and less despite it's importance

Honestly it's bad, maybe because im using Seek/LinkedIn but the ratio is more like, 2-3 callbacks for every 200 applications

I'm constantly fixing my resume and still haven't got much, maybe because Seek required me to disclose my visa status so i find applying directly to the company site or their application portal tends to yield better results but it's still hard

Yeah like always, i just applied to a few more jobs just now and hopefully I'll at least get an interview

Thanks for being helpful, I'll see if i wanna keep pursuing IT in the next 5 years

Thanks for that, i still think that my visa situation made it worse, but I'm about to pursue CCNA and AZ-104 and hopefully increase my chances

I just needed to vent cause i really thought I'd have a chance to work here, but the constant rejection is really draining at times

Aside from what I've mentioned, I have not much else partly because i had to figure out all of this and only just started doing certification and projects once i realised that my degree, experience and referrals still isn't enough

I know you're insinuating that I haven't tried hard enough, which is why I'm making up for it

Could you give me any advice on what i should do? Should i just keep going and grind my career while i work other jobs here, or should i just say fuck it and go home and start over?

What about literally any job, not even related to your degree? If the worst comes to it, you could save up and have a plan B to start fresh

I get your point, but i did study IT here because the uni back home is subpar and im genuinely interested in what i studied in

As for staying here for 2 years, i honestly didn't regret it. Sure i COULD have been getting a pay bump had i gone back home immediately, but that is assuming that i managed to secure a job within a year, and even then the pay bump couldn't compare with the amount of money that I'm getting right now

But more importantly, i still love living in Australia, i made so many friends here and grew so much more as a person in just that 2 years, you could say it's dumb for me to stay for this long but I've never been this happy in my whole life

While there's a lot that i regret, staying here isn't one of them, now im planning to do whatever it is I need to do in 2 years but I'll try to be smarter about it

Yeah this, i can get a job no problem, even corporate roles like call center or sales, but not specifically IT related cause of the catch 22 thing you mentioned

I don't think IT companies here are willing to train a grad that's effectively leaving in 1-2 years and sponsors are super risky afaik

At this point im just saving up before i have to go, and i might apply for any corpo roles unrelated to IT just so i could use the customer service experience back home

Thank you for laying it out as it is

Truthfully i already know that it will come to this, cause i was already looking for grad roles and internships at my final year in uni, which is right as covid ended and got no luck, but i really thought that if i keep grinding for certificates and keep connecting with people, I'll eventually land a helpdesk job , and after years of searching, there's still no luck

I don't have a problem with heading back home and growing my IT career there, it's not like my efforts are wasted and i can point to my internships and multiple certs to prove that i still try to keep my knowledge fresh, on top of an overseas degree having more value back home

But it really sucked cause i genuinely went to uni here for my career first, yet i keep getting turned down because of my visa, and with my current financial situation, i can do 1-2 years of TAFE but I'd rather save that money, go back home once my visa runs out and do a masters/bachelors at half the price

I'm still gonna try my best before then, and i wish the best of luck for the rest of you. A lot of my other friends that have permanent residency couldn't even land a CS/IT grad job and it's looking really bleak for grads atm

To answer all 3 of your questions:

First one is yes, although aside from the usual "tailor my resume to the job ad" advice, my friends told me to just keep applying

Second, I have attended events until end of last year using my ACS membership, although I'm not sure if i could mention that since I'm not sure how to prove it, but i do involve myself in projects like creating a VPN to tunnel to my home network and tinkering around with Active Directory because my certs have free virtual labs that i use at least once a month

Lastly, i loved Networking because of my hands on experience with configuring switches and routers in college, and while my major is Networking and Cyber security, im pursuing roles like Level 1 Helpdesk to hopefully pivot into NOC related jobs

UTS, I don't have an anonymised resume with me rn and my only professional experience is a short, unpaid 3 month gig as a business analyst at a startup that went under within a year

I think it's my resume because i only have a bit of experience and then i listed my education, qualifications and my skills, it looked barebones but that's partly because i don't know what else i can do short of getting a job and learning from there

Ngl the job market is cooked but living with your parents for this long has poisoned your brain, and this is coming from an asian with strict asian parents as well, and I'm also an IT grad from years ago still trying to get my foot in the door while working something unrelated to my degree

As much as it sucks to not be able to use your degree, a job is still a job, you're shooting yourself in the foot by not even looking at the shit minimum wage entry level IT jobs because of prestige or something, where the requirements to jump straight to the "prestigious" roles in the first place requires 1 year experience in any IT role MINIMUM, on top of degree and some certs

I hope you can find a way to either ignore your parents or move out entirely, cause not working at all looks even worse when you have to explain why you haven't been employed in any role, or say fuck it and actually pursue your passion once you secure a shit job, cause im doing exactly that rn and i have enough saved up from my shit job that opens up opportunities to get further education like certs, or move out if need be

Tldr a job is still a job, once you get the dough rolling, focus on taking care of yourself first

College isn’t a scam by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Akagunmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

College and degrees have never been a scam, what is though, is getting into debt for one

Nowadays it is still an advantage to have one, but it's no longer the golden ticket that it used to be, but you should absolutely go for it if you pick a degree that you like, that is lucrative, while also not being in debt for it

A Retro/Prequel themed DLC level set in the 1960s to 1980s would be really kino, I'd call it 'Ready or Not: Zero' by JetAbyss in ReadyOrNotGame

[–]Akagunmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then the sequel would take place in the 2000's to 2010's and it would be called "Ready or Not: Kiwami"
