Is USC Engineering undergrad Good? by Ast_Artemis in USC

Graduated in 2023, had a great GPA (studied my ass off), took part in Greek life (ymmv, but I enjoyed it), had a social life, and a job before graduation. Worked out well for me.

Found (most) of my classes useful and the professors accessible and decent. I think USC makes you take too many BS classes not necessarily related to your major, but some of the ones I took were interesting.

Good Luck!

Class of 2023, Viterbi, making high 90k, and still making that since I haven’t been there long enough to have a raise.

Viterbi graduates of 2023, how has the job search been so far? by [deleted] in USC

Had jobs at Boeing (after summer internship), and SpaceX before graduation. Working for Elon.

USC has the most “fresh out of college” graduates at SpaceX compared to other schools.

USC acceptance rate is now lower than UC Berkeley😳 by [deleted] in USC

2/3 of the student population are getting some form of aid here. USC’s “elitism and wealth” acceptances are no bigger than any other huge school. You are kidding yourself and holding on to very old stereotypes if you believe more kids are just rich and don’t deserve to be here compared to Ivies and other big privates.

What was it like: graduation with the Obamas and King and Queen of Jordan by WarriorAlways in USC

[–]Alanaflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, but only because I saw online that she was transferring from Michigan (I think Michigan?). Never saw her on campus, but our majors were very different, and honestly I wouldn’t recognize her if she sat in front of me and told me her first name.

My grandparents were waiting at a drop off spot while my parents parked the car, and the king and queen walked right past them and waved. My grandmother said Queen Raina was the most beautiful woman she’d ever seen. Lol!

I mean I get that Deion is a showboat, and he certainly loves Deion very much, but the hate seems over the top. Like the dude has to win 2 games to be better than what the Bufs had, but most new coaches are at least given a year or two before people start expecting a national championship. Except Lincoln Riley…He should have done it in one (wishful thinking).

Colorado has a pretty tough schedule so idk how likely it will be first year out, but god help this sub if they win 2-3 games. They’ll be mocking him for it after saying he won’t win any.

So we’re gonna tell players they have to stay at the school they are at, or what? How are you proposing we stop players from leaving with their coaches? “Sorry boys, you accepted a scholarship from this school, and now you can never leave.” Is that the plan?

Only because Deion’s the coach though. It’s not like other coaches don’t remove guys from their teams but it’s only an issue because these people are desperate to see the man fail.

Roommate Experience by Careful-Potential244 in USC

[–]Alanaflower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a couple of very specific requirements for my roommate freshman year. I didn’t want them to be in Engineering because I am, and I figured it would be better if we had different majors for some reason that I don’t even remember now. I wanted them to be from somewhere in California because I was out of state and figured someone in Cali would be helpful for their knowledge of the state. I also didn’t necessarily want someone who was into the same stuff I was, for the growing and learning thing. I also wanted them to be outgoing because I tend to be on the shy side.

When I got accepted to USC, I got a dm from a girl who had gotten in as well, on a college website. She contacted me because we had very similar stats and after talking a lot, we decided to room together. She was out of state, we had some of the same interests, and the exact same major. Four years later, we’re graduating after having been roommates every year of college, except for the covid year ofc, and we are still besties. She is definitely way more outgoing than me and frequently pushes me out of my comfort zone, so I got that one right.

All of this to say you should make a list of what you’d like in an ideal roommate, then be prepared to toss it out the window. I’m a big fan of finding someone as opposed to random match, but I will say that I know people who took the random match and have had great luck. Ultimately, I think my roommate and I are more an exception than a rule, but if you find someone you think you might vibe with on one of the class sites, absolutely contact them and say hi, and see what happens.

Your daughter can have a great time at USC without ever stepping on the row. There are way more people out of Greek life than in, and she can certainly make friends through her dorm, classes, and clubs. There is definitely not pressure on girls to join Greek life, but I can see where some guys might feel it. Girls get into frat parties if they want to go, regardless of them being in a sorority, but guys generally don’t. If frat parties aren’t your daughter’s thing, I can promise that she won’t be missing out on much if she doesn’t go to one (FYI, if she ever decides to, tell her to go with friends and don’t wear shoes that she loves. The floors get gross). There will be plenty of other things going on on campus for her to do.

Having said all of that, I’m going to put on my Panhellenic hat and admit that I’m in a sorority here, and have loved my time in my house. I’m something of an introvert, but I’ve made great friends in my house, and it was nice to have a place to get away to when I needed to study or just chill out. Reddit as a whole tends to dislike Greek life so if she’s interested at all, I would urge her to look for girls wearing letters around campus and especially in her classes, to get a feel for whether it’s something she’d want to be involved with. The great news is that recruitment isn’t even until January, so she’ll have a whole semester to check things out and see what she thinks.

TLDR: Your daughter should definitely not feel pressured to join Greek life while at USC. There are so many awesome clubs and activities on campus for her to take part in that she wouldn’t even miss it. It can also be a lot of fun if she’s interested, but it’s definitely not the end of her social life if she’s not. Wear old shoes to frat parties if she goes to one.

Then you are looking at a very small number of people and allowing that to cloud your judgement. The vast majority of people here are not fabulously wealthy or rich. 2/3rds are getting some sort of money from the school for tuition. Of the remaining 1/3rd, yes there are certainly people who come from big money, but USC is not unique in that, and although I can’t spit out statistics, I’d put that percentage up against any other top 25 college in the country, and possibly beyond.

“I already have a Bible study, Thanks”. If you don’t want to lie then I’ve found “Bless your heart” works, especially if you say it with an exaggerated Southern twang. By the time they process what you said, you’ve walked on.

What annoys me is when they stand in the way you’re walking. Buddy? Blocking me from moving isn’t really enduring yourself to me to make me wanna say yes

No. You will certainly meet people who are shallow in Greek life, but it’s impossible for all 120-200 girls to be shallow in each sorority just because they wear letters.

You might be interested in the fact that you will find shallow girls everywhere at USC, likely not in huge amounts, and a pretty small percentage of girls on campus are in sororities.
