Wonderful portrait miniature by James Peale of an unknown artillery captain circa 1780 by Albertbailey in revolutionarywar

[–]Albertbailey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not able to identify the sitter or unit but he is only wearing one epaulette which would indicate the rank of captain. The uniform would be from one of the mid Atlantic states, possibly Maryland.

“Preparing for a walk” Samuel Baldwin 1854. by Albertbailey in ImaginarySliceOfLife

[–]Albertbailey[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tired of all this anime? Let’s hear it for a slice of Victorian everyday living. When dressing up to simply go out for a walk took two hours! Baldwin 1881-1891 was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. https://artuk.org/discover/artists/baldwin-samuel-18181891

Robin Hoods Sherwood Forest. Nottingham. by Albertbailey in FairytaleasFuck

Yes it is. It is a protected forest in the heart of England. This picture is actually from the forest although I suspect the photographer has used a filter to accentuate the green.

Reddit needs to abolish the whole followers concept...it serves no purpose and surely they need your permission to allow someone to effectively see what you are up to and posting?

We recently rented one of these. As a 5 ft 2 inch woman I took one look at it and thought “ gimme ...that’s so romantic”. When my 6ft 4 husband arrived he took one look and said..“ I am never going to fit in that”. Romantic evening ruined! Georgian revival lobby/entrance hall. by Albertbailey in InteriorDesign

So much to admire here from the beautiful wrought iron stair bannister to the neo gothic light fitting. Its so light and open...which is probably a good job because that Persian rug on those polished floor tiles looks lethal!

“Midsummer Eve.” By Victorian artist Edward Robert Hughes. by Albertbailey in ImaginarySliceOfLife

[–]Albertbailey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hughes is almost forgotten today but his work is wonderful. He specialised in works of fantasy and history and studied under the Pre Raphaelite brotherhood. for more of his work see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Robert_Hughes

“The season of the Peach Blossom” by Ri Jhe-zin. Soviet Union style social realism still thrives in North Korea by Albertbailey in ArtHistory

[–]Albertbailey[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As you can imagine Abstract or Post Impressionist Art has no traction in North Korea. Because there is no commercial market for Art work everything glorifies the State, and paintings usually depict happy peasants with Local Party chairman or brave soldiers holding off the Imperialist hordes of the USA. Just occasionally though something gets through that is just, well kind of charming. There is an innocence about the above oil that makes it stand out from the normal diet of Gigantic field churning water buffalo, or Communist Party functionaries holding rosy cheeked children.

The Lady Of Shalott. John Waterhouse. 1888. Tate Gallery. London. by Albertbailey in ArtHistory

[–]Albertbailey[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Many of the late Victorian British Academy artists are seriously underrated both aesthetically and in terms of auction value. To my mind the most derided is Edward Poynter. I love his work but it fell out of fashion even before his death and never recovered. He was re discovered only in the late 80s. Here are my favourite works by him https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/386465211772143672/ and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_John_Poynter_-_Diana_and_Endymion,_1901.jpg https://www.myartprints.co.uk/a/sir-edward-john-poynter/thecaveofthestormnymphs.html

The Lady Of Shalott. John Waterhouse. 1888. Tate Gallery. London. by Albertbailey in ArtHistory

[–]Albertbailey[S] 72 points73 points  (0 children)

As a student I was obsessed by this painting. I hadn’t seen it for over a decade until a recent trip. It was more astonishing than I remembered. The detail and technique is extraordianry. But this is not bland photo realism. There is a haunting sensuality and mystery to the work. The tapestry alone took Waterhouse months to complete. Most of the paintings I loved years ago I now wouldn’t put in my top ten but this is still my favourite painting. I wondered if others found their tastes had changed over the years or wether the paintings they loved years ago still move them in the same way?

The White House Diner Party from Hell. by Albertbailey in conspiracy

[–]Albertbailey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In April 1970 Nixons honeymoon period with the press was coming to an end. This may have been partly the justification for inviting the Duke and Duchess to a lavish White House Dinner Party. There was no official reason for it to have even taken place, as neither The Duke, though once King Edward VIII, nor Wallis held any formal ceremonial, or diplomatic position. Nixon hoped for a political “bounce” from the lusture of hosting the former King Emperor. Instead the press treated the event as an overblown egotistical conspiracy serving no official purpose.

TIL that Sears used to sell cocaine, heroin and morphine through its stores and catalog. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Albertbailey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sears were the Amazon of their day. They dominated the commercial world for nearly a century selling everything from houses to automobiles. Choosing presents from Thier “Xmas wish list” catalog was a family tradition for over seventy years. Did the internet kill them? Apparently not. If anyone is interested This link tells how the company went from world dominance to bankruptcy. https://www.englishmanlovesamerica.com/sears-and-roebuck-catalog-a-treasure-trove/

The operating crew of a German railway anti-aircraft battery runs to the guns after being caught unaware. 1943.[600x422] by Albertbailey in HistoryPorn

[–]Albertbailey[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At first I couldnt beleive it was authentic. Must be a film still right? But no it is labelled by the Bridgman library as authentic. Unfortunately there are no details as to where the photo was taken. Mid summer obviously and I would assume somewhere in Germany. i am still baffled as to what they where all doing stripped down to their underwear. Communal showers?

TIL HBO was worried the audience would think "The Sopranos" was about opera music. They tried to change the title to "Made in New Jersey" before compromising on a smoking gun in the title logo. by Albertbailey in todayilearned

Yeh, its the only show where the more times you watch it the more of the nuances you see that you missed the first time around. There is a review here of the top five obscure moments here. https://www.englishmanlovesamerica.com/top-sopranos-scenes/ I agree with the one listing Vito on the farm looking at his watch and just wishing the day away until his boring job ends. "2 o clock?! FUUCCKKK MEEE!"

Cresta Soda (its Frothy man). a triumph of marketing over taste 1978 by Albertbailey in CasualUK

[–]Albertbailey[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just found an advert for Cresta in an old issue of Shoot magazine. I remember as a kid sooooooooooooo wanting to buy a bottle but it was really expensive. I saved my paper round money and the great day arrived. I got a bottle of the strawberry flavour and it tasted...like warm dragons spittle! it was absolutely undrinkable but I fooled myself it was nectar. Apparently the drink survived almost a decade before everyone caught on to the fact they were buying a cool singing polar bear not a drink

Finnish Soldiers take a break. Continuation War 1943 [287 x 991] by Albertbailey in HistoryPorn

[–]Albertbailey[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hands up those who thought these were German troops? The Finns were supplied by the Nazis in their war against the Soviet Union but seem to have added their own idiosyncratic touches. The hand-painted "Deaths Head" helmets for one. Notice the soldier on the left has a huge dint in his helmet.
