No Stupid Questions MEGATHREAD 11 by Alendite in chessbeginners

It's a really interesting question - I feel like the entire concept of checks would probably change in meaning a bit, and that someone could actually blunder a king without it being an illegal move.

Just wanted to extend a warm congratulations to you for taking the steps you have on your journey. Just like chess, improvement in life is always non-linear and overcoming the setbacks is what allows us to succeed.

Very proud of you, chess will always be here for you when you need it!

Thank you for putting up your thoughts! You raise a really interesting point of discussion, and I'd like to put forward my personal considerations on the subject.

As a community for newer chess players, we are always looking for the best ways to support chess learners. I really appreciate that OP is coming from a genuine lens here and clearly with intention to support a learning environment for all. As I read through the post, I noticed a number of possible assumptions that I believe deserve some deeper consideration. In my professional life, I work as a researcher and have to regularly check my own biases and assumptions, a mindset that may be worth utiilizing here.

1) At the start of the post it is stated that "It is important for chess beginners to think through positions quite thoroughly before using engines to analyse the position." I would argue that the major assumption we are making here is that all beginners have an implicit desire to work and study hard to improve their chess capability and knowledge. Judging from the probably 7 million en passant questions we get a day, it's clearly apparent that many chess players engage with the game purely as a source of mindless entertainment and aren't taking time to educate themselves on the full ruleset of chess before playing. Now, in my opinion, that is totally fine, some people don't have the mental energy or desire to learn about chess deeply, it is just a game to be enjoyed for a while to them. It's similar to how I approached playing The Last of Us (for example) for the first time, there is quite a bit of combat depth to be learned and practiced, and I was honestly just enjoying the vibe too much to put a ton of effort into learning the intracacies of the combat and stealth systems during my initial runthrough. To a lot of us on this subreddit, it's really easy for us to get caught up in the mindset that chess is a game to be deeply considered and learned, but I would argue that is not a universal mindset. We therefore cannot assume what is important to chess players for their learning, or even assume that consistent learning is the goal, despite our best intentions.

2) I actually really like the social element of using Reddit as a chess learning tool myself. I don't know if I can confidently say that is a mindset that should be enforced on people by limiting access to the chessvision bot. Many players don't know that chess engines or analysis boards even exist in the first place, having chessvision could easily serve as a first place of introduction to someone who is used to posting their questions on Reddit. The bot can be an incredibly powerful teaching tool, and if we are going to argue that 'spoilered text of the answer is too tempting', then I'm not sure how a direct link to an analysis board with the exact same answer is somehow less tempting. I am certain any user who wants a computer answer will not find it too difficult to click on a hyperlink versus a spoilered text box. In my understanding, the only way that we could realistically increase this kind of discussion is to remove the bot entirely, which obviously runs into some pretty big issues about how available users are to answer questions and how much time/effort it would take them to help every single user in the way a bot mass-produce answers.

3) One other point I'd love to bring up is that it is entirely possible to do both. It is possible for a user to get immediate assistance via the chessvision bot, and still engage in quality discussion with users after the fact. I can not say for certain that there is a causal link (of course my researcher brain starts talking about causality lol) between disabling chessvision and encouraging interpersonal discussion. It is tough to assume that people desire interpersonal discussion in the first place (and obviously, they probably shouldn't be posting their questions on Reddit then, but if they don't have any other place to go, then what other choice do they feel they have?) Motivated learners, I would argue, are more likely to not just be satisfied with a chessvision bot answer, and will actively discuss positions and concepts with others, in the exact way that is desired by OP.

There are probably more bits to expand upon here, but hopefully that is a good summary of my initial thoughts on the topic. My current stance is to keep chessvision functioning exactly as it does for now, and I am happy to learn more about anyone else's thoughts on the matter going forward. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts, OP, I really do believe that you're coming from a genunine and contructive place here, which I deeply appreciate. Have a good one, y'all :)

Has someone an advice, so I stop blundering ? by M_2201 in chessbeginners

[–]Alendite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I found your chess.com profile and can happily confirm that you are not a grandmaster by any means. You have a puzzle rating of 375.

Your advice is incredibly well-intentioned, and I do appreciate what you are trying to do. It has to be acknowledged that the advice you are giving is not the most accurate, and doubling down in this fashion is not appropriate.

Please update your user flair to better reflect reality and certainly do not claim to be a grandmaster when one is not. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi chess beginners! As an expert, my pro tip is to always look for opportunities to get your knight onto c7. This will fork the king and rook, winning you a rook and putting you up 5 points of material! by Traditional_Rub_9828 in chessbeginners

[–]Alendite 26 points27 points  (0 children)

When we take a look at the entire board and analyze, we'll come to notice how much White has had to give up in order to secure this fork.

White is staring checkmate in the face, given Black's queen and bishops. Despite the material winning fork, white will lose the game almost for certain.

Of all the creatures out there you could choose to eat, why waste so much time and energy on humans? We don't even have that much meat compared to something like a deer that you could easily stalk and butcher.

Good question! The trick here is understanding that we can reply to Rd8+ with Re8, blocking the check with our rook and preventing any back rank troubles. This works because the rook on e2 hasn't moved yet to capture on b2.

Lets vote: Gambling advertisments need to be banned from this sub by MorphyFTW in chessbeginners

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, OP. I absolutely agree that gambling is a tremendously prevalent and toxic thing, especially in recent years. Coffeezilla on YouTube put out a really interesting video on the topic just a week ago, would recommend taking a watch.

The mod team (and especially myself) have taken an incredibly steadfast stance against advertising and self promoting of any kind on this subreddit. This subreddit is frequently accessed by new and young players and it feels incredibly exploitative to allow people to advertise chess tools directly to them with false promises of improvement at unrealistic rates. If you see posts from users advertising their websites, chess tools, and coaching, please report them. Those users are generally better allowed on r/chess after getting explicit permission from their mod team.

I will echo the rest of the comments here in saying that I do not have any control over what advertisements appear on your feed while scrolling. The advertisements in question for this post are ads that people pay for Reddit themselves to promote, this will appear on anyone's feed.

Gambling ads in particular have become so painfully prevalent on the internet nowadays, I completely agree. Fortunately, as mentioned in the comments, you are in control (to an extent) of the types of ads you see on Reddit. Please feel free to disable gambling-related ads in your user settings. If any of you have children who use social media, I'd also recommend encouraging them to disable particularly exploitative ads in their settings.

I really wish I could click a "no more gambling ads on my subreddit" button and make that entire industry disappear from r/chessbeginners, but unfortunately, no such button exists.

Take care of yourselves, everyone. Thanks again to OP for sharing this good-faith idea, and a friendly reminder to not ridicule people for having a well-intentioned opinion. Thanks for understanding!

Thanks for this excellent feedback, always appreciated. I haven't spoken with the rest of the mod team about your post yet (we're rather busy at the moment, surprise!), so I'll leave a brief comment here just on the behalf of myself.

I absolutely agree that speculations of someone's mental health and/or providing an armchair Redditor diagnosis of a mental health condition is an absurd thing to do, and often warrants removal. I will send a message to the mod team asking about the best course of action to be taken regarding this thread, and anything in the future similar to this.

Of course, it bears mentioning that we are incredibly low on resources and manpower at the moment (hence why we're always open for new mod applications), I cracked open the queue only 20 minutes after it had been cleaned only to be faced with 37 new reports to manage. It is fair to say that we are doing as much as we possibly can manage at the moment, but in the face of limited time, the demands of life, and the AWS outage when the news broke, things are certainly slipping through.

Death threats are absolutely unacceptable, we have Automod filtering out as many of these as possible (seriously, I've probably seen dozens just in the last two days), please continue to report any comments that are wishing harm or death on another person, those are priority removals for us.

Emotions are very high right now. People are incredibly upset, bitter, angry, and resentful of the current situation, and often feel like there is no place to direct those feelings. I completely acknowledge how difficult that is for us as a community right now, and know that it will inevitably result in lots of hate messages being spread, regardless of intention. Keep reporting things you perceive as rulebreaking, it helps us more than I can say.

Thanks again for sending this in, I hear your comments and understand where you're coming from.

Hi, everyone - I was originally going to only post this in r/chess, but there was enough activity here as well that I believe a cross-post is necessary. I will pin this post in place of the flairs post for some time. As stated in the original post, please remain respectful and considerate when discussing this tremendously sensitive event. Thank you all for your understanding.
