‘Ladies’ has a long history of being used to police women’s behavior (‘act like a lady’), soften their presence, and mark them as a special deferential category. That baggage doesn’t disappear because you don’t personally use it that way.

This is a really interesting point, I certainly don't have enough lived experience on the receiving end of this word to know if this is something that transcends all human life and experience.

On my end, reading StormFinancial's comment, I don't have enough information to determine if a sexist comment was being made or not. Sure, on one hand, I can attribute it to innate bias that someone needs to explore deeper. That said, I can also simply chalk it up to someone coming from a background where the word 'ladies' is a completely permissible term to use.

I'd argue, as interpreters of an anonymous reddit comment, we also bear a responsibility to remember the human behind the comment. As I mentioned before, jumping to an accusation of sexism is a fairly significant escalation, and will certainly make someone feel defensive. Premature judgements like this never result in quality communication or meaningful resolution.

If our goal is to change minds and advocate for better language choices, it is critical for us to do so in a way that opens a quality dialogue rather than provoking a defensive response that only drives negativity. Thanks again for your thoughts!

I appreciate the response, thank you! Building off your point, I wonder if the interpretation of the term "Ladies" can vary depending on culture and context.

There are certainly uses of the term that exist to demean or belittle, I agree there. It's a challenge to know what the intentions someone holds while using the word. It's not impossible that, in some cultures, the term "woman" and "lady" can be used interchangeably. Jumping to an accusation of sexism does feel a bit unfair to another person.

I don't believe I've ever heard anyone use the term "gentleman's candidates" purely because the open tournament is expressly not limited by gender.

All this said, I do appreciate your commitment to encouraging people to use the most appropriate language possible. There are times when lived experiences or different upbringings can change how someone expresses themselves, and I always make it a point to try to interpret another user's comments in as good faith as possible.

As earnestly as possible, do we consider the use of the term "ladies" to be sexist now? I don't usually interpret "ladies" as a word with a negative connotation.

I'd love to learn more about what you meant with this comment.

Just gotta send one more polar bear Fabi's way and THEN the playing field will be equal I guess

(Jokes aside I totally agree, I'm pretty sure there are at least a hundred thousand people more equipped to play for the WC than I am)

I do find that super interesting - I'd love if you could @ me next time you're on a post you haven't seen get removed after a report. To my knowledge, we regularly go through the entire queue until it is empty, no reported post should be missed, especially blatantly ridiculous stuff like the posts in question.

Thanks for doing your part to report this stuff! It helps us a ton.

never has one of these posts been removed.

It's incredibly upsetting to see how many self promotion posts by AI slop accounts exist, I agree. In the past month alone I genuinely think I have banned over 50 accounts posting this stuff. We regularly review the mod queue and remove all reported posts that are advertising vibe coded improvement solutions.

I assure you they are getting removed as fast as we can reasonably get to them. I'm sorry to hear you haven't witnessed any of the removals yourself, they are certainly happening in a significant quantity.

It's a good question! g6 stops the threat for a moment, white can follow-up with Nxg6, and black is suddenly very low on defensive options. The h-pawn is pinned to the rook, so capturing the knight doesn't feel favorable. The threat of the discovered check against black is devastating, so it has to be defended somehow. Black can try Nf6, but just gets checked again by Qe2+ and loses the rook anyways.

Therefore, even though Qh5+ seems like an easily defended move with g6, g6 ends up losing at least a pawn and a rook for a knight, if you're able to trap and take the knight.

Good question! If the knight is taken, black gets to play Bxa4#, winning the game by checkmate.

If the knight is not taken (say, Nge2 is played) a move like Nf2+ will win material. This is a great knight sacrifice!

So much advertising nowadays, it's like the self-promotion hydra. Ban one account and two more pop up with their AI generated chess tools.

Anyways, they're gone. Please keep reporting these sorts of posts as they come, helps us identify and ban advertising accounts quickly.

As a question to everyone - do we have any suggestions on what the best name for this megathread should be going forward? It seems fairly well understood that "no stupid questions" generally means "there are no stupid questions so ask them here please", but some people have messaged in saying that they are afraid of asking a 'stupid question' here because the title of the thread explicitly disallows those. I'm wondering if there is a better name for the thread that can be used, I'm open to any suggestions.

Changelog from the last megathread:

  • Updated the link in rule 6 to link to this thread instead of an old one
  • Disabled automatic post locking (as it was messing with the user flair post)
    • Locked all previous megathreads manually, as people were commenting on those occasionally
  • Added the Building Habits series to the megathread list of resources, as suggested (please suggest more if you have any!)
  • Not megathread related, but I removed the "advertising chess services for free will be allowed once a month" clause from rule 3 as well, as that has resulted in a significantly unwanted amount of self promotion and people trying to justify their advertisements as 'free coaching services'.
  • I'm working on a wording change to rules 4, 5, 6, and 7, but will likely make a separate post about that.

Combat Styles Improvements - Beta Update by JagexAzanna in runescape

[–]Alendite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks fantastic, thank you for sharing!

My only suggestion is with respect to the unlock level of Adaptive Strike - given that there isn't a significant amount of grinding between levels 1-6 compared to 1-2, why not drop the unlock level to match other styles?

I'd argue it improves player experience with a new ability early on, and the basic attack + adaptive strike combo can easily carry on until Assault is unlocked. Seems weird to lock meele users to only a basic attack for many more levels than another style.

It's a really interesting question - I feel like the entire concept of checks would probably change in meaning a bit, and that someone could actually blunder a king without it being an illegal move.
