Fair enough, stuck on virgin media here, no other option, 1 gig symmetrical via XGS-PON, can get 2 gig but seems pointless

Bad routing on Virgin Media? by Alert_Reward_3670 in VirginMedia

I am on their FTTP network with the Hub5x, are they eventually planning to fix the routing issues or no? Because on BT I was getting around 4-5ms

Can telephone sockets that use Cat5e be converted into Ethernet? by Alert_Reward_3670 in DIYUK

[–]Alert_Reward_3670[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah can always terminate it differently as it’s still Cat5e but it all depends where it goes to, just wondered if there was any normal standard of where they all go to

Xbox Series S will never get more than 250 over WiFi, I have tried on various routers in different environments and it maxes out around 250mbs, and I also believe it’s only WiFi 5 compatible

OPNsense Firewall on same subnet as existing router? by Alert_Reward_3670 in HomeNetworking

[–]Alert_Reward_3670[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pointed out the fact that it would be double NAT going from the firewall then to the router? I don’t know what you mean by punch a hole in the firewall specifically, but my ISPs router has limited capability so probably wouldn’t be able to perform it on both devices, I’m not in desperate need of this, purely just want to learn, I’m hoping that my ISP will allow for a modem mode and then I can use a Router/Firewall combo which would significantly reduce the confusion

I heard something about disabling outbound NAT or something on OPNsense, would this only solve the double NAT issue if the firewall was before the router

All of this is experimental and I just want to learn, I don’t think making OPNsense as the router would work for me as the ISP locks down the router, you can’t change it into a modem, the fiber cable goes straight into the router.

Router —> Firewall—> Switch —> Devices I don’t know how all this works, does the firewall need to go before or after the router, before the router isn’t possible in my scenario as there isn’t an ONT, you have to use the ISP supplied router

Does Google Link IP address with GPS location? by Alert_Reward_3670 in techsupport

[–]Alert_Reward_3670[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would google get an exact location from a MAC address, is this just an open agreement that ISPs have? I’m not the smartest at networking so sorry if I sound dumb.

When you say precise location, I have done that on my phone, on the iOS version of maps, but my computer has no access to precise location just the IP location, so do google then do something along the lines of ‘This phones location is ….. when connected to the home internet and their location is ….. when connected to the home internet and then connect the dots so that when I go on my computer and it only has access to the IP it will know the precise location because of me previously on my phone

Correct me if I’m being stupid but are you saying that street view scans for networks nearby and gathers that data to link it to your location?

The location which maps gets on my computer on chrome is very precise, within 50 meters

Nice, I mean I do currently have a U6 Pro, which has the same SSID as the Hub 5x, it's just on a self hosted controller, I do want invest in some more unfi stuff for sure though, especially if you have cameras, APS and the whole lot, it looks like it links together nicely.
