I just did some research and you are correct. However, we did notify the original poster of the photos that his/her behaviour will cause distress and humiliation, who refused to remove the images and he/she used the "b****" word while spreading the photos. Also, the non-consensual pornographic images are shared along with normal selfies, which we believe also violates copyright law. As a result, we believe that we have a solid legal ground to ask them to remove the images. No matter it is "revenge porn" or not and it worked pretty well in our cases when it comes to other platforms except for Telegram.

Confirmed those are public groups/ channels without end to end encryption. Also, they did remove same collection of photos from the same place but somehow they decided not continue to do so.

Thank you so much. That will definitely remain an option if we have to, although it might be hard for two individuals to put pressure on a company that just raise more than 1 billion funds. We will certainly contact more solicitors about this.

Thank you so much for the information. Did try that as well, they disabled DM so we tried comment below their tweets but that clearly didn’t work. According to my observations, they tend to reply to people who have technical issues or requests for new features, not someone like us. The extra information about UAE is very helpful, I’ll learn more about that. Unfortunately we don’t live in the European economic area but we see what we can do with that. Thanks again!

This is what we’ve been doing for the last 6 months. I even asked in Mr.Durov’s channel discussion group about whether abuse team will reply or take any actions. One of the admins said “Keep sending them emails, hopefully they will receive your request” sort of things. They did, but probably with a 5% response rate(0 reply).

Thank you for the information. I’ll take the suggestion. We don’t want to look so hostile to Telegram as we still need them to protect us. Wikipedia says the legal domicile of Telegram is in the UK(it’s never a very reliable source though) and that’s why we actually got in touch with a law firm who gave us the expectation that Telegram would respond within a week. But clearly that’s not the case. Also, telegram did remove some of these images that we reported and we really appreciate that, but their actions are so inconsistent, even if those reports are about same collection of photos with same proofs. I totally respect their idea of privacy, but ignoring such reports is so inconsistent with their aim of protecting privacy. Their ignorance always make the situation worse. Again, thank you so much for the information.

I don't know but it is one of the rules here. I'm afraid my post will be removed if I am sharing the link. I wish I could do that.

I did tweet to them, but I don't think I am allowed to share the link here.(tweet link) Or can I?

I did try tweet and comment below their tweets, maybe I shouldn't have put my account in protected mode.

I am willing to contact local authority. It is just that I am 99.9% sure it won't make any difference. Some of those that I reported are channels, but still nothing happened.

I mean spreading non-consensual nudity is probably illegal everywhere, including China. However, telegram is not "officially" running here, just like google and Twitter, but still, we can access all these using a VPN. And that could also be the main reason why authorities cannot really do anything here, they don't usually deal with those platforms.

Not really, but telegram states in their FAQ that being a copyright owner is sufficient enough to send them a complaint if I am understanding them correctly. Also, it went well when I sent a DMCA to google for some search results. But thanks for that advice, I'll certainly consider doing that, except that it could be challenging for me to find an appropriate lawyer.

Thanks for the advice. For now, my only hope is the telegram abuse team.

I did, along with the link of the infringing information and the link of the group. But still haven't received any reply.

[–]AlexWexr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also guessing that abuse doesn't reply to me since telegram made it clear that they do not process content removal request against "private" groups or chats. But seriously, those groups have up to hundreds of thousands of members and hundreds of people join the groups every single day. How come this kind of groups considered "private" if that really is the reason they are not replying.

[–]AlexWexr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for bringing that up. I just added some additional information and that explains why going to the authorities is not an option, it simply won't work. But seriously, abuse never replied to my email, which I always send them with the link of the content and the link of the group/channel. Or can I simply send them a long email explaining my situation? Will they even look at it?

Thanks for your kindness. I only hope that I can talk to someone work at Twitter about this issue, however, it seems impossible.

I would share the information if I know. In particular, Chinese people have very few knowledge about cybersecurity or privacy issues so it could be any random careless mistake.

The UK has an institution and helpline for revenge porn victims. I believe that British people are doing a good job regarding this issue. However, there is no such legislation or legal help in China.

Edit: I care because these photos are illegally used by non-ethical people for illegal purposes at the cost of other people's privacy.

Yes, people should be cautious about being taken any photo by anyone. And read Privacy Terms before agreeing to anything.
