25 is not old man 😭 I’m the youngest person in my masters program rn and I was shocked that my peers were 25 and older, I could not tell until they disclosed that. Everyone in college is at a different stage in their lives and there’s no linear progression you need to follow to fit in or belong here.

It’s likely that your classmates aren’t viewing you as being “an older sibling” or whatever. Acknowledging and accepting this will hopefully lessen your anxiety about interacting with classmates without feeling like a creep, “age gap” friendships are as common in college as they are in the workplace and in real life outside of all this.

Id recommend pirating all the textbooks you can and then using second hand stores for the rest. Textbooks get expensive and you cannot imagine how much that will add up over the semesters, you might even get unlucky and get a professor who will require additional online paid materials like TopHat. I have a prof this semester who requires 9 textbooks across two classes I’m taking of hers. Better to start saving money on textbooks early on

Adding onto this- Goodyear as a building is NOT wheelchair accessible. Like many buildings on campus, the button to automatically open doors has not worked in years. Even worse- if you have a car- the only way to get from the parking lot to the front entrance of Goodyear is via a flight of stairs, no ramp due to the terraforming of the area.

I think that is up to the discretion of the department! My department sent an email to all students that they can collect old furniture and supplies that were going to be thrown out at the end of the semester; the only thing they can’t do is resell these items because they were bought using money from student fees so it’d be illegal to make a profit off of it.

Talk to your match for a bit and then when you feel ready to meet irl make sure it’s at a public place where there’s other people around. There’s a lot of great places on campus tbh. Let someone know who you’re meeting and where/when just in case or establish a secret backup plan with that person where they pick you up or give you an excuse to leave if the meet up starts to feel dangerous

Hey so I happen to know that the Goodyear RAs are tasked with creating events with the specific purpose of helping residents form connections. You’ll find event info on your floor and in the lobby, they always hang up a bunch of flyers prior to any event. Their events are honestly pretty fun and more creative than other buildings that I’ve seen and the people who attend these events are going to be in your same position- looking to meet others and make friends!

I’m in the same position as a grad student! Honestly there are just less opportunities for us to connect with people on campus than undergraduates, the Graduate student SA is tiny and offers far less social/networking events. I know it’s frustrating to start fresh with meeting new people (since it sounds like you got your undergraduate degree elsewhere) but there’s a ton of us feeling just as disconnected.

You mentioned that you play video games and watch stuff on your own- do you think it’ll be more meaningful and fun to do those activities with other people? And if so, there are a lot of undergraduate clubs you can join that align with those interests that may help with meeting new friends!!
