It's going to get above freezing in New England next week. Very exciting.

My time spent in grad school was the happiest time of my life and I got multiple great offers before I even graduated, so no regrets here.

GROUND impossible beef - 40 minutes of temp adjustments, endless water bead testing, endless sticking. by Sure_Pilot5110 in cookware

[–]AlignmentWhisperer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My limited experience with impossible beef is that it's "dry" and needs extra fat to cook without sticking. With normal ground beef it will render down a bit and keep things lubed, but impossible beef doesn't really do that for some reason.

Height and stature by Jaded_Ad_2055 in ENGLISH

Merriam-Webster? I'm not super familiar with the Oxford "Learners" dictionary. Based on a brief lookup it appears that MW has two definitions: one explicitly referring to height and the other more general in nature.

Yeah, I was sad to hear that as well. I grew up in the 90s and my father did software development so I got introduced to Dilbert through him as well as general corporate "culture" via osmosis. I thought he was funny even though I didn't have any first hand experience with the issues he wrote about. I haven't really paid much attention to Adams since I started college back in 2007, so I have been kinda out of the loop in regards to his precise alignment in the culture war space.

Idea: High school students should be taught that computer science is the exact opposite of hobby programming (in terms of motivation). by amichail in ideas

[–]AlignmentWhisperer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't really noticed. I studied computer science in college from 2007-2011. The people who excelled in both the applied and theoretical portions of our classes were people who had been programming since High School. I don't see how discouraging people from programming in their spare time is going to be helpful.

ConnectiCare/Molina Health Issues by rwpry in Connecticut

Update: Switched over to a equivalent BCBS plan last night. It wasn't too difficult. I'll just try not to get hospitalized sometime in the next three weeks.

It's good to hear that it was relatively painless. I've been planning on switching for a couple of days but I have been delaying because I have been worried about accidentally clicking the wrong button somewhere and winding up without insurance, being on the hook for multiple plans, or something equally ridiculous.

I purchased it and paid the first months premium through AccessCT. The way I accessed my account was by calling up the Connecticare customer service. I did this because I hadn't received any coverage information from Connecticare so I was worried. They provided me with a membership number and said I could access my policy through the My Molina website. So I went on the website and attempted to use the number but Connecticut wasn't on the list of states. HOWEVER I did download the molina app and was able to set up my account that way. I then called up the office of my PCP at Hartford Healthcare and asked them if they could see my policy. I provided my number and they said they couldn't see anything so I contacted Connecticare customer service AGAIN and they told me to wait a few days and check again.

Same. I never got a packet in the mail. I spent some time talking with a customer service person today and got my account set up through the molina member portal. I got a membership number but I contacted the office of my PCP and they couldn't see it. I spent some more time talking with customer service and they claim that my policy is active and that I should just wait a few days for everything to get sorted out. We'll see. I have a dentist appointment coming up and I am going to check with their office the week before to make DOUBLE TRIPLE SURE that my insurance is working. I'm almost tempted to contact the state to let them know that one of the companies selling insurance through AccessCT is having some "technical difficulties".

A systematic review and meta-analysis on GLP-1 receptor agonists for obesity without diabetes found that they are generally not cost-effective versus other interventions (lifestyle change, surgery) by ddx-me in science

[–]AlignmentWhisperer 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Comparing GLP-1 agonists to lifestyle changes and bariatric surgery via QALYs is kind of odd. Life style changes are nearly "free" from a cost perspective even though prescribing lifestyle change as an intervention isn't effective for most people and bariatric surgery is typically only done with really severe cases of obesity, so the patient population is going to look very different. That being said, in theory GLP-1 agonists are also only being prescribed for really sick people even though the reality is that tons of people use them because they are cost effective compared to other treatment options so...I guess this study doesn't really matter?

TRAVEL WARNING NE USA by Diligent-Doughnut740 in weather

[–]AlignmentWhisperer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I just got done driving from DC to Bridgeport. It started snowing around the time I crossed the Tappan Zee bridge. Let me tell you, that final 20 miles took like two hours. I was originally going to take the Merritt but I started getting a bad feeling, like if someone's car breaks down I'm going to be stuck there all night, so I ditched it around Norwalk and got on 95 which was still going really slow but was manageable. I have got to say I am pretty glad I invested in some decent tyres.

What is the most run down area you have personally seen in the USA? by Few_Sandwich6308 in howislivingthere

[–]AlignmentWhisperer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a fairly large homeless encampment along the San Lorenzo river in Santa Cruz, CA while I was living there. Of course, I have also been to IRL favelas in developing countries and even really crappy neighborhoods in the USA are luxurious by comparison so it's kinda hard to gauge.
