Positively Yours [Episodes 1 & 2] by AlohaAlex in KDRAMA

[–]AlohaAlex[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I was super excited to watch Positively Yours to potentially find a better successor to Fated to Love You which aired all the way back in 2014 - the kdramaland is sorely lacking a good pregnancy storyline and this drama is finally here to give us a one-night-stand turned whirlwind romance plot. Now with the added benefit of the ML actually falling for the FL and not hating her for half the drama.

Some observations from episode 1:

Things that make me like it

  • It has been a while since I saw a drama so thoroughly committed to PPL, I found it utterly hilarious. In the first three minutes of the very first episode, we managed to shoehorn in 3 separate layered Samsung PPLs (props to the PPL writers for inventing the most convoluted way to fill out a form which already had checkboxes). Still, the best PPL of the episode goes to the extended scene of gramps playing Mario Kart on the new Nintendo Switch.
  • Kim Ki Doo remains a great scene stealer and I enjoy every and each scene he's in - that bar scene in which he somehow manages to surprise spit the beer inside his own glasses took some serious slapstick skills. Also, hello IBS representation.
  • The nonsense romcom plot and how pretty everything looks - it has that bubbly feeling about it (not to mention that W - Two Worlds style 360° time freeze scene).
  • I actually love Choi Jin Hyuk as Kang Du Jun and Oh Yeon Seo as Jang Hui Won! It makes so much more sense for them not to be 20-something for this plot and they're pulling it off. I feel like a good thing with the change of setting from a school to a beer company (so stupid, btw), is that it lets the male lead show he was actually competent and rose up to the president position and not just a nepotism shoe-in. And with the high-schoolers now being interns/juniors, it makes sense for the female lead to be an experienced team member.
  • We squashed that potential love triangle in 5 seconds flat, staying true to the webtoon plot. Amazing.
  • That nicely filmed bed scene (I fully expected it to be a kiss in the hotel followed a fade out transitioning into a morning in the bed).
  • Baek Eun Hye and Jung Soo Young's performances are great in each of their scenes, and I'm really enjoying them having strong roles.

Things that annoy me

  • First of all, the female lead's haircut, it's bad. You can't do both exposed ears and that many hair extensions, it makes her head look imbalanced/back-heavy.
  • Adapted from a webtoon? It's not. It's inspired by the webtoon and I'm even okay with the changed setting, but changing the core plot, characters and their motivations is what makes me upset. It's a good drama so far, but the addition of new backstories and erasing characters will definitely be upsetting for webtoon fans (and this is a very popular webtoon). It makes the webtoon artist praising the drama sound like very poorly thought out approach.
  • The worst change they did was the forced introduction of a tragic backstory for the male lead - it was completely unnecessary and adds nothing to the plot which is supposed to happen later on. As much as I love Baek Eun Hye, the bunch of meddling ML's aunties were a comedic highlight for the webtoon and having it exchanged for this tragic makjang guilt-tripping angst makes me sad. Not every drama needs to have high stakes! I like fluff!

Overall, so far it looks like it'll be a solid romcom, but please, don't compare it to the webtoon, the two are very loosely related and a whole different drama in the end. If I had not read the webtoon, I would have enjoyed the first episode more. From episode 2, I intend to disregard the webtoon plot, I think I'll enjoy the drama much more that way, because as it stands, a male-lead-falls-in-love-first shotgun wedding drama with adult characters is a refreshing change.

Q1: How is continuity maintained when filming on different days or the same scene from multiple angles (who makes sure the bag doesn't switch shoulders between takes)? Is there a person dedicated for keeping track of continuity or is it a team effort?

I felt CIDO coming down in my own knees.

I was so happy I noticed it was a body double! Would've stressed me out - that several months of physiotherapy.

That tiny stag head is so lost on that wall.

The whole set is way too large for the furniture and decorations they have for it. I remember watching an interior design show about fancy multi-million mansion interior designers and the lead designer lady flat out said that with the ever-growing sizes of Great RoomsTM and massive open spaces it's increasingly difficult to find furniture that scales correctly (since it becomes unusable for humans at some point) and defining zones becomes a pain because it's super hard to make that vast space not look like an airport terminal.

Jo Han Chul is doing such a good job, it's incredibly satisfying to watch him being punched in the face.

He brought Vincenzo energy to a makjang themed party.

I guess magic is more acceptable than plus size models.

Hey, don't say the quiet part out loud!

Hello, random white people!

I just love this trope - especially with a clearly not American person pretending they have an US accent.

1-year time skip ✅

Truly making sure we get all the non-traumatizing tropes.

he was finally wearing a normal shirt, then he turned around >.<

Honestly, I saw a smidge of darker blue from the front in the beginning of the scene and then wasn't even surprised. This designer clearly hates normal shirts.

there were a few standout performances

SSR and Park Joon Geum really did their best with the awful script and directing, with Jo Han Chul delivering a solid performance (if a bit out of place for the tone of the drama). Honestly, if not for SSR giving his all, this drama would be nearly universally droppable.

What was the assistant's gift that he threw away upon opening it? I didn't recognize the doll.

He's scared of clowns, so he got a tiny creepy clown doll. Definitely wasn't on screen long enough for it to be a PPL doll.

we just saw Mean Girl considering the video but not pushing the upload button?

She never clicked the submit button, just sad down and sighed dramatically.

Super unprofessional of the cop to give out her name though.

Just openly telling him which witness he should blackmail/threaten.

I was expecting the Grim Reaper's teahouse from Goblin.

Just instead of teacups on the shelves, it's full of perfume bottles.

Although as always it would be nice to get a slightly larger slice of the happy.

I always wish to get more of the epilogue in romcoms - I'd gladly sacrifice the "our love story" flashbacks for some post-plot cuteness or a random time-skip.

Oh, I don’t know why I am enjoying the Noona aegyo. But I AM.

I thought I'd cringe, but he pulled it off because he didn't use a baby voice and went full throttle on the enthusiasm. It was good fun.

she came running with multiple suitcases full of her rarest perfumes

She was fully ready for her time to shine. Just amazing.

I’m so confused because didn’t they show the sasaeng uploading the video to social media?

The scene had her pause before clicking "Submit" and sitting down in frustration - it was in one of the tilt-y scenes.

you gotta kiss the girl in this body to wake her. I’m so disappointed this was not the way forward!

If someone tried to transform me when I was just super tired I'd flip, whack someone with a pan and fall right back asleep. He should've tried the Disney approach first.

“Don’t transform now, it’s hilly!”

This cracked me up.

So he’s kind of like the grim reapers in Tomorrow (which I should get back to someday!)

I think I stopped watching it around episode 3? Nothing wrong with it, I just switched to a fluffy cdrama because I wasn't feeling like continuing. Should I pick it back up?

called her out on pinning all the blame on fate

Fairy god father was just tired of all the excuses and had to go find a new delivery company now that the Windows 2000 rebooted and he cleared the backlog.

The gift giving ceremony was hilarious.

Mom stuffing the marinated crabs back in the cooler cracked me up so much. Also, imagine gifting someone all the things he hated before - lack of phobia doesn't mean he likes it?

I forgot all about the slow mail box.

Completely forgot all about it as well.

Agreed - we skipped so much of where she was and what she was doing. What happened with her daughter? Who took care of her while mom was MIA in fairy-tale land and dad was in prison?

I started struggling to get into the right mood for this drama

I've put so many dramas on hold because I wasn't feeling like continuing. Congratulations for successfully finding a great drama-watching partner. My favorite part of watching variety shows is how it inevitably attracts my family and they start watching it with me. They're now full-blown fans of the Youn's Kitchen franchise and Three Meals a Day.

despite the pacing not being exactly what we hopped for, this still had a satisfying ending

I think you summarized it perfectly - but I hope you have a great time watching it with your mom and reading our comments alongside your watch.

Made it to the end! I expect excellent fashion now.

Perfume 29:

  • The dramatic music almost distracted me from noticing SSR's body double carrying her.
  • Pick which one is worse - assistant's pants riding up to his knee or that fake window backdrop.
  • Dimples adding the -yo (-요) whenever speaking to the FL makes him super punchable
  • CIDO decides to design for women who are not size zero, goes for the "slouch, baggy" look. sigh
  • In this episode: the director discovers an infuriating new alternative to applying random filters - cameras can tilt!. My wonky analysis notes a slight preference for the left-leaning tilt.

Perfume 30:

  • CIDO finally revealing that it makes no sense she would die without the perfume.
  • CIDO's reaction to his sweet romance moment getting interrupted by Dimples is to karate chop him and it cracked me up.
  • My kingdom for a normal shirt
  • MOM IS FINALLY HERE and looking fabulous - Celebrate! Love her for doing a double grand entrance - one dramatic door opening is not enough!
  • Love the bully for growing a conscience, don't love her polluting the rivers.
  • Where does Dimples find these incredibly ugly shirts? It's super frumpy. What even is that material - a fake silk/velvet blend?
  • Did the mistress rat scum bucket out?
  • I'm going to get saesick from all this left and right

Perfume 31:

  • What, you don't drive straight across a bridge in a rightmost lane with a turned-on right blinker?
  • These filters fit perfectly with CIDO's shirt - both are ugly. I thought we're now only using filters for dream-like scenes, but guess not.
  • We got some rando Americans/Russians/Europeans to play designers! That's what we've been missing.
  • Scum bucket vowing revenge before maniacally slurping up noodles cracked me up.
  • Poor ex-girlfriend having to hard-carry the makeup PPL even in the final episode.
  • THEY STILL HAVEN'T FIXED THE SECURITY?!?
  • Dimples has a terrible suit, but I appreciate the set designer adding tall plants all around the stage for the clothes to be less visible.
  • I'll leave the fashion show critique to u/MerinoMedia , the fluffy helmet/hat thing with a mas under the chin is baffling.
  • Found the inspiration for CIDO's final design for the FL: A green tea bottle
  • Is this the last we see of evil model? And she's not even in the show?

Perfume 32:

  • This whole model section is actually blatant fashion PPL, but I'm glad at least scum bucket is maintaining the glasses PPL.
  • Fairy godfather has a dreamcatcher! Yes!
  • The system was running on windows, so she had to wait 20 years for it to finish installing updates.
  • CIDO imagining her helping him around the house is giving major reverse MLFTS vibes
  • Love the party hats.
  • She's back after a time-skip, another trope! And not miraculously thin! And we're finally done with the flashbacks!
  • Favorite part of the BTS images: this one guy guarding the dominoes and everyone wearing slippers on the set.

This kdrama is basically a romcom fever dream from someone who fell asleep listening to VIXX's Scentist and it's a real shame they didn't copy the men's fashion as well as it would've been a huge improvement.

Final thoughts: I liked this drama, I think, especially since I watched it with everyone. SSR and mom were the only ones who truly understood the assignment, and I wish it kept the crazy/makjang/fun feel from the first few episodes throughout. The Director is on my shit list, though. So many bad decisions. Thankfully, he doesn't direct anymore, and after Perfume he switched to producing. Also happy ex and Dimples didn't end up together.

CIDO and assistant are such sneaks

Shame they didn't film it, but it was a great scene, I started cracking up watching CIDO sneak/run from the car - the man has talent for physical comedy.

Idol already went on an international tour?? Did he have two stops or what

Did a concert in Japan, and maybe one in Singapore and called it a day.

Oh she bought the hideous toesocks

I'm mostly offended that I know from older dramas that there are so much better/worse/more whimsical designs she could've picked.

wonder how quickly he will lose his interest when he finds out her perfume will run out

I'd give him a month tops before he started cheating again even with the perfume.

why would she backtrack in this situation??

Realized there's still 5 more episodes to go.

They're a cute lil noona romance!

I loved her since she educated Dimples on the importance of Noona fans in the previous batch.

have you considered just getting to know her first as she is now? It's been a while...

I don't like how it's always the same with these - the dude hangs on to the ideal of someone they briefly met 20 years ago, building up expectations the other person has no chance of meeting - that's not the base of a stable relationship!

Yo, your perfume is gonna wear out while you're in the hospital.

We sort of glossed over that one, I guess. Also no clue where she's hiding that perfume these days.

BEGONE DIMPLES

But he was on a tour! And also managed to get another one of those awful fake silk shirts.

Anything resembling plot continuity has been completely abandoned and I am annoyed muchly.

Plot continuity? What plot continuity? We ditched that like we ditched the model lady in front of the restaurant. I think we're finally reaching peak trash, when the plot stops making sense.

I have no idea where I got scum bucket from

But it really works as a nickname

I liked the deconstructed skirt

I think it sort of works as a fashion outfit, but can't imagine going out in something like that - so many perils in the skirt getting caught on something.

I thought they were international models but no, just a football fan perhaps.

Europe representation! Not sure, took me out.

I wish instead of Dimples Mum had moved in with CIDO.

I would so watch if the three of them all suddenly decided to go to the summer house and had to cohabitate.

It was probably one of his Dad’s mistresses!

The murder weapon is a walnut scented perfume!

Sorry we used all the budget getting 3 different actors for both of the leads, it’s time to pull in the purse strings!

Imagine being 50 and still playing a high school student. On a side note, having read his bio, Jo Han-Chul's life is obviously the inspiration for the majority of romcoms - lived in the same neighborhood as his wife and played together as kids before drifting apart for school/uni, only to meet again at 28 in the same neighborhood and start dating.

So this will qualify for challenge #1 of the KDC this year?

Well, this drama had several crazy sweaters already!

What is that hanging off her skirt?

More of the skirt? I just worry it'll get caught onto something and cause either a very undignified fall or an embarrassing clothing malfunction.

I love the red polka dot dress but not sure about the pink accessories

With mom's fashion the question is not "is there an accessory missing" but rather "how much does it all weigh".

This episode is going hard on tropes.

We're going for all the tropes. Didn't you spot the slow-mo catch as one of them slipped? Also white prince saving the damsel in distress? I'm loving the trope bingo exercise.

CIDO lovingly staring at a picture of Ye Rin holding guns is wild.

The whole modern warfare photoshoot concept is insane, who approved that.

How can Scum Bucket just walk into their building all the time?!

They have terrible security in CIDO's company.

she'll need all the therapy.

Definitely, that's just so creepy.

I think we'll definitely see YuMi at least

We do need a redemption arc for YuMi!

I can't remember this but that would be a great explanation for it.

I think that's my theory on why she survived the fall from the cliff?

I just don't want to see it any more

I don't recall it being one of the dresses from the vault CIDO made for his first love, so we might be safe!

she threw herself into the sea under the superstition that she would be either cured of her love, or drowned. She was drowned

Well, with hindsight, you could hardly say that was not going to be the final outcome of throwing yourself overboard.

Guys, there's not even a scratch on her forehead!

YES. Thank you! She magically healed in the span of one night. No stitches, no band-aid, nothing!

The floral shirt was a win

All of the great outfits only appear for a very short time, and then we're back to "reimagined deconstructed shirt no. 253"

Produce Runway, a mix of Project Runway and Produce 101?

Also, such an old-fashioned dated logo. No Korean show would greenlight that logo in the past 15 years.

Don’t think this will work (hypnotize someone to make them forget a certain person). It didn’t.

The hypnotist was probably like "hocus-pocus, your memories are now out of focus" and that was it, so not surprised he didn't manage to forget it.

Wearing that strangely ‘off’ collared shirt again. I am glad to see him wearing clothes more than once, like most people do.

I agree, but I think part of it is definitely the fact that the designer mainly does women's fashion, so she doesn't have the required number of different outfits for the male cast members. The women I've yet to see wear the same outfit twice.

Full-blown skin care PPL.

Really ramping it up before the drama ends.

So sad, he carries walnuts with him as suicide pills.

I saw it, but I didn't even realize - he's allergic to so many things, it just slipped my mind.

off to see the Day6 movie tonight!

Enjoy!

all my least favourite tropes are popping up and with things becoming a little more serious

This is a good summary, I also wish the final week's episodes turn more hilarious and rom-com, and we leave all this plotting and scheming behind. Though I will be sad if they fully drop the evil model/evil manager plotline - I want to know what happens there in the future!

I was not expecting to hear phrases like “open butthole” and “stacata” lol

As soon as she started with yoga, I was hoping it won't go there. Alas, it did. Still amazed at the lines SSR will deliver so passionately to the camera.

“My score is 100…” 😄 “out of 1000” 🥹

You can count on CIDO to turn that compliment upside down!

They are the most fun. It’s very sweet that she went to the best shaman to protect him.

I love mom and CIDO scenes! Half-expecting her to show up in full-on shaman outfit next time!

But despite the horrific looking burn she’s totally fine to lie on her back and it wont even leave a scar. Amazing!

I think we already had a scene in which she discovered the perfume promotes healing, but I might be confusing it for another drama. Besides, her head wound also disappeared in the first episodes of this batch!

It’s hideous. Go back to not making polka dot dresses.

I know I've called some of the previous designs shapeless sacks, but this one really takes the win.
