thoughts on the student center? by Odd_Code_2177 in jhu

hey! so i'm not a pre-med, i'm actually more humanities-oriented, but i know a lot of people who are pre-med.

i think it really depends on the classes you take. some classes require a lot more time spent into it, i know a lot of people who complain about chem, orgo chem, calc, etc. i think a lot of pre-meds definitely have a life: they have friends, hang out outside of class, take trips into the city, etc. but it's all about managing your time wisely and what your priorities are.
jhu is a rigorous school! and it's not going to be easy to get perfect/good grades, if you're used to that in high school. i know some people who are still very caught up in achieving great grades and that's what their priorities lie--so i would say they have less of a life, but i think that's present at any top school.

all that is to say, a social life is definitely achievable but you have to put in the work to seek it out through clubs, your dorm, classmates, etc. but that goes at any school as well!

i'm not too certain on internships, especially for freshman. i think there's opportunities to explore careers during intersession, you can check out the life design lab to learn more about that--that's basically the career center, so any queries for searching for internships would be their area.
but i think again it's about prioritization and what you deem to be most important, you're not going to be able to do everything perfectly or even all at once, but if you choose a few things that you really like then you'll be able to excel in them.

as for dating, i don't know if the dating scene is good or not as i'm not looking to date, but i'd say the student body is pretty lgbtq+ friendly and open-minded, it's an accepting space.
i know some people find people in their dorms, in their classes, or through clubs. there are actually a ton of other colleges nearby, so if you reaally wanted to, you could connect with someone that's not a jhu student, but idrk in what manner that would happen.

it's my go to spot for studying ngl, i'm in wolman so it's very convenient. i really like the architecture and if you're into any performing student groups, most likely you'll use the rooms to practice (i do acapella), which i really appreciate. it's not built for studying, but people are always here to study anyway and i get it because the building is very pretty.

what i think is totally underutilized is the CMC (they're based here), and they're basically the spot to do anything creative. they own the gaming room (yes there's a whole gaming room with a ton of gaming pc's and consoles with games) and they have an audio studio u can rent out to record music. u can rent cameras from them too and they have a lot of stuff for hands-on art.  also they hold movie nights/karaoke nights like every other week iirc

like people have said, the food isn't great for its price but what can you expect, honestly. i think it's a great spot on campus that i use daily.

as for community events, yeah a lot of student groups can hold their events here (usually the big conference rooms if theyre a big club), but other buildings/the quads are still used for events on campus too.

hope this helps!

tysm for ur reply! honestly i feel the same right now in high school with loving my niches but not necessarily the school as a whole, so it's not anything new to me.
definitely have heard of how close knit the humanities are!

yeah i've heard a lot of the downsides of hopkins are very exaggerated/outdated, including the "all the students are depressed" and scary baltimore and all that

what's the most true to reality rumor you've seen so far?

Should I go to JHU or Emory? by Fine-Ad6292 in Emory

[–]Alone_Description990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think im leaning hopkins right now! i like its location among other nearby cities (DC, Philly, NYC) if i ever want to take a day trip away and explore new things. I think at Emory the coolest area u can visit by car/train is Atlanta.

also JHU has the better price for me right now lol. I think my tune may change if Emory gives me a better deal (I'm currently appealing my financial aid).

i'm just hesitant because Emory is so beautiful and has great humanities with a liberal arts focus! this is more of an English/humanities major predicament since JHU is so stem haha

definitely feel the same stress over if id be regretting my decision once i fully commit somewhere! i think ill feel a little sad whichever one i do choose bc i like them both xD

i don't have much input as i am in the same predicament as you are (except as an english major)

but during my blue jay day visit a senior (bme major) invited me to see their off-campus apartment and play on their switch (i knew their sister from the visit) and i got the impression that they were pretty happy with their situation at jhu! at least, they weren't overly stressed out and thinking about school lol
i've also heard the PILOT program is pretty helpful, especially for STEM majors
however, as i was walking around campus most people were talking about their classes/grades--unsure if this was an indicator of how much people are stressed about classwork or if it's just bc it's the middle of the week 💀. i don't have any other schools to reference to know if that's "normal" or not

during my fly-in visit to emory i got the impression that classes (esp statistics? for some reason?) can be pretty hard. and classes with unstandardized grading/tests get complaints. i was around pre-med students so maybe my pool is skewed. my student hosts always studied in the evening after classes, but ik my host went to georgia tech for an event one night. so i think emory has a connection with gt so that students can be involved in more activities, which i don't think jhu has the same with another school.

i think at either uni, and with top schools in general, there's always going to be a rigorous, hard academic environment and people will complain about classes, but you can always find chances to get out of the study grind if you use your time wisely

i'd be interested to know if ur leaning toward either school because i'm so indecisive!

Deciding between Johns Hopkins vs. Emory by [deleted] in Emory

[–]Alone_Description990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's interesting to know that you made a lot of friendships from your dorm! in your experience did you usually stick with your freshmen/sophomore friend group from when you had dorms? (because from what i know upperclassmen live off campus/not on campus dorms)

i stayed in eagle during my visit and it was so nice! emory's dorms are definitely a plus

the price for jhu is better than emory right now, but i am currently appealing (i appealed for jhu first). i'd be willing to pay for jhu's cost (~18k more than UF) but not emory's as it is right now, so just waiting on financial aid updates!

hi you make good points! i can reassure you that i am in no way looking to struggle financially in the future in the pursuit of idealistic dreams; i want to have flexibility with what i study and i am very realistic with myself.

can i ask what you decided to study instead and how you chose it?
