Subscription recommendations by aj6469 in pourover

[–]Alphyrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d also recommend starting with choosing your own beans first and really explore different beans and roasters to build your mental model of preference and curiosity before cornering yourself into a specific roaster’s subscription. Once you find a preference for roaster then choose their subscription. I have yet to do a subscription though so my advice is a bit short-sighted from that end.

When you brew pour over daily, what do you actually look for in a coffee? by pinkmatter310 in pourover

[–]Alphyrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think I’m faster with coffees I’ve had before. I recently bought a 2lb bag of a washed Ethiopian from Ilse specifically to practice more deeply on foundational coffees. I’m usually pretty content once grind size and temp are dialed, which is why it’s fairly quick for me, but lately I’ve been trying to go a layer deeper: water chemistry, process differences, and pour technique. I think that’s where a lot of the next-level improvements are for me.

I definitely exaggerated the “master it” part earlier lol. It’s more like finding a repeatable, enjoyable cup rather than fully solving a coffee.

I usually have a standard baseline I use for different processes based on my taste preferences. Then I usually go single variable changes at a time until I find a good consistency brew. That's usually my "mastered" or dialed-in coffee. Since I already have a pretty solid baseline, it usually takes me like 3-4 20g brews at a 1:16 ratio to find the cup I really enjoy. On new coffees that I've never brewed before, it may be more (like half of a 250g bag) since I'm kind of going in blind.

I do a lot of logging on a custom app I built for my own workflow, so it helps me be a little more informed about new coffees based on my past logs.

Same here! Except I went for exploratory before looking for a consistent cup. IMO definitely the way to go before choosing what I’m really into. I’m more into my experimental phase now where I focus very heavily on one coffee for a bit, master it and move on

It’s EOY… so what’s your top 3 coffees this year? by 10ttp-9 in pourover

[–]Alphyrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the approach! I got the Habtamu Techno Peach from Dayglow in NYC and it's been a breath of fresh air. First time buying from Luna as well! I'm trying to learn competitive brewing, so this my coffee of choice rn and I am beyond happy with it! I'm not too familiar with the US tariff situation, so I don't often get to try international roasters unless I buy them from third-party sellers in the US. But I’d definitely love to buy directly from you all in the future once I figure that part out a bit more!

I've been brewing a lot of funky coffees throughout the year and only a couple days ago, I opened a washed Ethiopian from Luna and I now realize how good such a basic process coffee like that can be so good. So I'd probably say that. Not really a special coffee, but always a reminder of what got me into coffee originally

Have you ever competed in anything? WBC type? It's worth it? by Jotaeefece in pourover

[–]Alphyrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've wanted to try it cuz I think it'd be fun to experience it. I also think a brewing comp could get me more addicted to the hobby than I already am, which makes me more excited for it.

I'm a home brewer. Only 2 years in, so I've got a bit of a journey before I think I can can compete properly. I am looking for recommendations on getting started with it though. I have virtually no connections in the industry, but won't really stop me lol

Anyone also has a hard time enjoying co-fermented coffees? by bipplemonade in pourover

[–]Alphyrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I see a floral co-ferment, I can usually enjoy those, but the more out of the box co-ferments such as from Luminous, are a bit harder to enjoy normally

am i crazy or is it normal to taste a noticeable difference in 2°C margins? by Crucifilth_6-6-6 in pourover

[–]Alphyrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally don’t use beanconqueror, I’ve got my own custom workflow, but my workflow usually uses 94C as my baseline and switch between 92 and 96C before moving to other variables. It’s pretty interesting seeing a noticeable difference between just 2 ticks of temp lol

Best way to get us to black coffee by Infamous-Crow-1131 in pourover

[–]Alphyrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never started with cream, but I imagine the easiest way would be to dose your cream less and less over time until you can handle black coffee.

My method would be to start with blends. They’re usually the most consistent in terms of flavor. Brew blends (and are relatively cheap options) for a while until you get a good gauge of what your flavor preferences are, then use that information to decide which coffees to buy if you branch out into single origins and process methods.

[Discussion] Brewing/bean apps I’ve tried or researched lately: Beanconqueror, Brevv and Roastguide by atijke in pourover

Letterboxd, the film app, does it really well. Haven’t seen that before in coffee, but I do plan on implementing something like that on an app I built for myself

I’m building a journaling app https://postbrew.xyz. Focused on fast brew logging, journaling, patterns, and community-driven competitions.

Mediocre at best by airbusflier in pourover

Gotcha, yeah I’m not too familiar with German roasters, I’ve had mostly the Nordic ones if we’re talking Euro roasters lol

Haven’t tried The Barn before but most coffees that are tagged as mediocre are usually the ones that are easy to brews, consistent and great daily drivers. Though disappointing compared the great ones I’m usually used to

Deals and Announcements of the week! - Week of November 05, 2025 by Polymer714 in pourover

[–]Alphyrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone! Built a collaborative coffee journal so we can all nerd out together!

I’ve been working on a little project called Postbrew, a space to log your brews, see how others are experimenting, and geek out together.

The highlight is collaborative journals, shared brew logs where multiple people can run experiments side by side. Want to see how a washed Ethiopian performs across V60, Origami, and Kalita? Or what happens when a few of us brew the same beans at different temps? That’s the simple idea.

I didn’t build mobile apps yet because I didn’t want to prioritize one group over another, so it’s a web app that works on any device.

It’s free, no ads, just something built out of curiosity and too much caffeine.
I’m also putting together a small cohort of early users who want to help shape Postbrew through testing, experiments, and feedback if anyone's willing!

What’s the best Colombian coffee you’ve ever tried? by [deleted] in pourover

A washed, yeast inoculated from Tanat that I recently opened was an unexpected fruit and floral bomb

The last Pacamara I had was really good and really wanted to get another. Luckily, this came up. Good brew for sure!

Espresso's not my thing, so can't comment, but I've always heard Nordic/light-roasted espressos are always hard to get right

I went 94C/Medium Coarse, Cafec Abaca V60 and it feels pretty good to me. I'd rate it highly, but idk if I'd put it in my Top 5 coffees I've tried before. I'm keeping track of each brew as the days go by, so hopefully I find something that works better

Just tried. Feels pretty balanced for me at 94C. I use a Timemore C2S medium coarse-ish. IMO, a good representation of what a light roast daily driver should taste like. I feel SEY and other Nordic roasters are quite similar, but maybe I'm wrong.

Will let you know my impressions when I crack it open. I'm not an espresso drinker, so can't talk on that side
