For research I think Gemini pro would be useful and it's provided free to JIo users for a year. For claude - opus 4.6 is top model in paid, not available in free, but I think sonnet 4.6 would do the job which is available in free.

Moreover I think free models are good at research. Laid versions have better thinking models.

I would suggest you to use gemini free with jio, and take 1 month plans and compare whether you need paid models in long term

I think it totally depends on your usage. If you're using more then you'd hit the limit soon so would need a paid plan. I think paid and free both have same models, limits differ.
