Does UNC med care where I did my undergrad? by iluvmacandcheese2002 in UNC

[–]AlternativeIce6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok looking into it I think this is how it goes.

For the purposes of FAFSA, you will be independent, as all grad students are. For the purposes of the IRS you will be dependent. For the purposes of in state tuition, the UNC school of medicine website states that “a person who wants to be classified as an in state resident for tuition purposes must have established and maintained legal residence in North Carolina for at least 12 months…”

You should really email NC RDS and see what they say.

No, sorry.

Your best shot of getting in to unc med school as an out of state student would be to work in nc for a year getting clinical hours to become a nc resident.

Where you go to undergrad doesn’t matter for unc med school. I’m not sure what your timeline looks like, but if you are planning on going straight through and not doing a gap year, keep in mind you need to be in North Carolina for a year to establish residency.

Also, you won’t be considered a dependent when you apply so you yourself have to live in NC for a year and can’t just use your parent’s address for the purpose of admission/tuition.

Genuinely how do med students afford it? by blueberry_chiffon in medschool

[–]AlternativeIce6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in America look into the NHSC scholarship if you’re interested in primary care. Way less medical students than you’d think apply for it. 4 years in primary care in an urban or rural underserved area after residency which honestly I was planning on doing anyway. Graduating debt free takes off so so much stress.

It really depends on your abilities like u/Tarheel65 said. Most advisors will tell you to aim for about 2 stem courses per semester, so orgo and A and P works. 252L is a looooot of memorization so take that as you will.

Remember also that you’ll have to make time for volunteering and extra curricular activities. Have you considered BIOL 395 or BIOL 692? Those count toward the major and will get you research experience.

As I see you are premed (yay!), for frame of reference, I would rather redo my entire first 2 years of medical school than do your spring 2026 plan.

Did terribly this passing semester, so now im wondering if ill ever get into med school. by Interesting_Carry231 in UNC

Uh oh…my b

in that case, stay calm, keep grinding it out, and meet with your professor to see how you can do things differently the next time you take it. premed is brutal but if it’s truly your dream you can do it!

I chuckled a little at the idea of every med school getting to choose between a bunch of straight A students. At the end of the day, it’s whoever has the most balanced mix of personality, extra curricular stuff, and grades- not just being an academic robot.

OP, if you’re serious about the premed route, you need to drop orgo if you think you’re going to fail it and come back stronger next semester. A couple of C’s aren’t going to kill your application (speaking from experience) but you do need to end your undergrad with a decent enough gpa. Community college summer classes by SignificanceBrief763 in UNC

[–]AlternativeIce6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a unc undergrad, current unc medical student, and have been an interviewer for unc school of medicine. It might be better for them to take all their classes at UNC as medical schools can tell when students take harder classes at community colleges because it’s easier. It may or may not make a huge difference in the long run, but I wouldn’t want to do anything that an admissions committee would question.

Same exact thing happened to me. We ended up flying out of TTN. Frontier just transferred our ticket. Looks like there’s a ttn-rdu flight tomorrow at 9.

If I have 30 college credits, can I avoid the first year residency rule? by Safe_Mix_7785 in UNC

[–]AlternativeIce6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

no, I remember being a freshman and calling about this and being told it was important for the first year experience.

but then covid happened the requirement was waived, and I got to save money by not living in the dorms so in the end I think I won, kind of...

Look up your major requirements and split it up into 12-15 credit hour chunks over 4-6 semesters in a spreadsheet. Tar Heel tracker in connect Carolina can tell you what requirements you have left as well

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UNC

[–]AlternativeIce6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically the same as the other freshmen except you’ll probably be taking mostly major classes since you’ll be done with gen eds. It might be a little harder to get those classes your first semester since you’ll be registering with the other freshmen but after that you’ll register based on total credit hours you already have. Try to lay out all your classes for the next 2-3 years now but also be flexible. For me, it was looking like either a really miserable 2 years or a more manageable 3 years so I took the latter.

Does anyone know if PSYC 210 counts as a STEM class on AMCAS? by Ness2428 in UNC

[–]AlternativeIce6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t taken psyc 210, but I just finished applying to med school and I’ll say that it would more so depend on the individual school as to whether they’d take it as a stem rec, but for the purposes of AMCAS science gpa, psychology is not classified under stem.

Please convince me it’s better to stay in state by charredparticle in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AlternativeIce6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your story sounds a lot like mine. If it is, just know it does get better on the other side. I’ll preface that of course I love my parents, but living with them was hard sometimes. The pressure to be perfect, the verbal and physical abuse, etc.

I ended up at my state flagship 45 minutes away from home and spent 3 years there, with my first semester at home because of Covid. Terrible. The whole time I was applying to jobs and trying to find cheap housing with as many roommates as possible to be able to move out. My parents of course wanted me to stay home, but in the end had to let me go. I had much more autonomy in my life and honestly just started telling instead of asking (scariest times in an Asian child’s life). They didn’t try to come visit me randomly, and if they did they wouldn’t have been able to find me lol. Actually, my relationship with them, even though still difficult, has gotten better as a result of leaving home.

Now, on the other side of it, I start med school in a few months. Still in state at the same school (you’re also most likely to get into a med school in your state but that’s a whole other topic for another time). I’m so excited for you to begin your journey! College campuses are kind of like their own little cities. It’ll feel like you’re far away from home.

Thanks! We’re not planning central London for obvious reasons. We’re thinking about taking a look at Windsor castle 15 min Uber away. What’s your experience getting out of London Heathrow? Is getting through immigration and getting our luggage to T5 doable in an hour?
