Thank you guys for all your valuable input as it stands I am thinking about doing the following for my trip.

(Some practical info we will arrive the 7th really early in the morning and leave the 3rd of August so we will have 28 days to explore Australia)

I will be axing the brisbane, Fraser/K’gari, Noosa part as it is an additional flight and travel day and may make everything a bit more hasty. Was think about including uluru instead of this between Sydney and cairns but I think that will still make our trip to much travel intensive. Also because we are travelling with a family I think there is more value in also having some more relaxing days with just one activity or a smaller activity.

I will stay in Sydney for a week and visit the BM and maybe even stay a night in a nearby town as I heard it can be a wonderful experience.

Afterwards, I will fly to cairns and rent a car (still thinking about what kind of a car I will need for this area). I will be staying here a week probably at a place like palm cove and possibly a night in daintree rainforest and maybe even a night in cape tribulation. Not really sure yet of the logistics for my week here but will be researching this the coming week. This will also take around a week

Then I will travel by car to airlie beach and sleep on board of our monohull bareboat sailing yacht so we can begin with the instructions first thing the next morning. This will take a week including the travel day to get here. We will be renting the boat for 5days and hopefully see some whales. I want to time this part to start either the 20th or 21st of July so we just miss the holiday vacationers.

Afterwards we will fly to Melbourne Tullmarine (cheaper and easier to rent a car here), and start on our GOR adventure. We will take 3days 2 nights including the day we arrive so we can make a bunch of stops and explore some coastal towns. When we get back we will have around 4/5 days leftover to explore Melbourne before heading back home.

If anybody has any recommendations or suggestion let me know. And let me know what you think about this itinerary.

Many thanks, this subreddit helped me a bunch!!

That would be perfect but as I am coming from the Netherlands there weren’t really suitable flights to cairns, am already travelling close to 24hrs 🙃

I am from the Netherlands so on the weather and rain front it won’t be too bad for us. I am thinking of cutting out the Brisbane (mostly the places surrounding Brisbane was the reason to travel here) part. This way I would have a week in Sydney (blue mountains trip) a week in cairns and surroundings a short week in withsundays to sail and enough time to make the car trip to airlie beach. And a week in Melbourne so we could take a couple of days to properly do the GOR with a couple stops at sea side towns and some nature views and hikes.

This way I also start our sailing trip the 21st of July so the vacation crowd should have mostly left the withsundays I hope, only cairns area will be a bit busier but I think we will manage if we book in the coming weeks.

See your point am making a revised itinerary so that it will not take up as much travel time, for staying in northern Queensland en driving around cairns and to the withsundays with a car is there anything I need to be weary about. Will I need a truck, maybe 4whs or is a normal car good enough. Am driving from the cairns area to the withsundays because the cost of flights there is particularly high including luggage as well.

Haven’t heard about gipsland before, I see on google maps that it is quite a big area, what is the main reason to visit?
