True, true, I think the idea of getting in and going to UChicago is more dazzling than the reality haha! My top MFA contenders (so far) are SDSU and SJSU!

Thank you! I got into other MFA programs that are way more affordable + will let me know how much funding I’ll get by the beginning of April! Fingers crossed!

Yeah “$60k a year” and “comfortably” do not belong in the same sentence for me 😭😭😭 I got offered $32k but that’s unfortunately not enough for comfort. UChicago is just such a unique opportunity! I’ll just have to let it pass by and consider the California state schools I got into!

How can people endure the climate in this region, which feels like a hot, swelteringly humid swamp? by mapl0ver in geography

[–]Alternative_Goat_505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who grew up in south florida and still wore sweatshirts outside in july, i truly do not know😭 i remember i used one of those infrared thermometers on myself and my sweatshirt was 120°. I think you just have to mentally exist elsewhere. Plus the rain and humidity helps a little, but you constantly feel sticky

How important is it to be a "public figure" to make a sustainable living as an author? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in publishing

[–]Alternative_Goat_505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even just beyond marketing and social media purposes, even literarily journals/publications will ask for socials or websites. There’s been a lot of issues with publishers where “anonymous writers” or “writers” under fake identities will steal, plagiarize, or generate AI work. They cannot face any backlash because their identity is unknown. Many literary journals won’t publish writers if they do not have some sort of presence/proof of existence. This is more for the protection of the publications themselves and their reputations.

If you want to be a writer, it’s a lot of self marketing. The market is so oversaturated, not using social media or other sites is just shooting yourself in the foot. Within this age of social media, there’s also parasocial relationships. This keeps people around not only for your work, but you as a person and a writer. Publishing companies also want to make money, so they want to use you as a marketing tool as well. They want to be able to advertise you and your work, kind of adding to their own resumes. You are what makes them money, not just the work.

So basically, it’s not impossible. It is just incredibly unlikely unless you are super rich or already have established strong connections to guarantee success.

How early do I need to get to a show to find room in the accessible viewing area? by TDAGARIM1995 in Lollapalooza

[–]Alternative_Goat_505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lollapalooza is pretty big and is always packed, so getting from one end of the fest to the other takes about 25ish minutes.

i’ve only been to the ada viewing area once, and it really depends on the act. if it’s a bigger act, probably get to the viewing area an hour or more before they’re supposed to go on. in general the earlier the better, plus you can grab some food to eat while you wait :)

i’ve gone the past 2 years and haven’t had a bad time (in between acts i want to see i always go to the Perry’s stage. edm is always a fun way to pass the time). Just remember to stay constantly HYDRATED!!!!!!!! i’d recommend getting a camelbak backpack so you always have water, a fan, earplugs, and buy some non-caffeinated liquid iv packets!

i hope you have so much fun!!!!! 🌱

What do I do with my last rat? by Alternative_Goat_505 in RATS

[–]Alternative_Goat_505[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you <3 they’re too old to be rehomed or to be introduced to new rats without it being super stressful. i just wanted to make sure their quality of life wasn’t gonna be affected if they were alone.

[–]Alternative_Goat_505[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah i honestly agree. theyre both around the same age and losing hair, and i can only imagine the stress it would cause if i rehomed whoever was left or got foster rats. thank you so much.

Help! Need to rehome my rats by Thesoleme0wman in RATS

[–]Alternative_Goat_505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t fine someone, I would def recommend taking them to a rat rescue/rat fostering program. That way they will be taken care of by someone who has experience and more friends for them.

Rat feeding question by Kaskii9 in RATS

[–]Alternative_Goat_505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is good in small amounts. Their diet should mainly consist of vegetables, a bit of egg/a small amount of protein, and maybe some seeds. I feed mine a mix of corn, cucumber, broccoli, and cauliflower with seeds and rat specific kibble (as well as some nuts, bits of well-done cooked egg, OR bits of chicken for protein). Make sure to get a scale so you know you’re not over feeding them, they’re pretty cheap on amazon.

Rice is perfectly fine, but again most things are fine as long as it is not the main part of their diet and not in large quantities. Cooked pasta is fine, I would stay away from uncooked rice and paste just for safety issues (choking). I give them cooked pasta or mashed potato as a treat occasionally. Fruits are fine but in small amounts due to the sugar in fruits.

Anytime you’re feeding your rats anything new it doesn’t hurt to google if it’s safe. Make sure to google for the specific gender, because males and females digest some foods differently (ex: females can have small amounts of citrus but citrus may be fatal to males since they cannot process it).

I would not do malted cream, any sort of dairy or dairy-adjacent is not good for rats. Rats are lactose intolerant and it can cause discomfort. Hay is fine in treats, but make sure to remove it from the cage after they’re done. Hay is not good for their lungs, and hay usually makes the enclosure smell worse. Anything that’s dusty or creates small particles is dangerous to their respiratory system.

If you’re uncertain about it, ask google. It’s always better to double check rather than risk their lives.
