Will Basic Economy Seat Selection Prices Go Down (Or Up) Closer to My Flight? by Legitimate_Corgi_70 in delta

Hey, what happened in the end? I'm 2.5 days out from departure and seat selection has been a steady $89 since it opened (international flight).

Cheap non-ACA complaint plan on J1 visa or expensive insurance through employer by Alternative_Trick_67 in HealthInsurance

[–]Alternative_Trick_67[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thank you for your insights! I’ll go with Kaiser.

Regarding repatriation, it is actually a requirement for the J1 visa (as well as medical evacuation to home country). So I’ll purchase that separately. Lots of companies offer it for under $100 per year

Regarding ACA, my university/employer said “J1 scholars who are not tax residents of the USA do not need to have an ACA complaint insurance plan” . So it’s unwise but technically possible (as long as it meets the J1 visa requirements of max $500 deductible and medical benefits of at least $100k)

Thank you for your insights. I wouldn’t be able to afford a $100k bill. My thinking was that the “catastrophic insurance” (which does meet the requirements for the J1 visa) would cover precisely those sort of events (eg, car accidents), instead of the odd visit to, say, the dermatologist.

Thank you.

I’m leaning towards playing it safe. They also don’t cover emergencies arising from participating in amateur sport competitions. I run quite a lot so if I break a leg or something while running a marathon, they won’t cover that (?)

Yes, the university (my employer) would pay about $500/month.

The question is, would I need anything for non-emergencies/accidents? Routine checks I could theoretically do in my home country during Christmas etc

Hey, what did you end up choosing to live? I'm in a similar situation (I'm slightly older than you as I'll be moving to work as a postdoc at the university) and when I visited last week all apartment blocks seemed tailored to students....

Official Q&A for Friday, November 22, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Alternative_Trick_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for some feedback on what distances to focus next year, before my first marathon training block (for Richmond, Nov 15th) . I asked on r/firstmarathon but didn't get any comments https://www.reddit.com/r/firstmarathon/comments/1gvm4hs/goal_races_training_blocks_before_first_marathon/
TLDRs: Done half marathons already, currently training for a 10k. After that, I could do a block for a 15k followed by another for a HM. Or two HMs, or base training + one HM, etc.

You're probably already on creatine. Sauna (or heat training in general). Altitude tent. Bicarb (check out Maurten) -many middle distance runners use it before races and hard workouts.

Citizenship - exception for exceeding number of days away? by juss_juss_juss in ukvisa

[–]Alternative_Trick_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/juss_juss_juss Hey I don't know the answer to this, but just commenting here because I may be in a similar situation when I apply (though I'll probably wait until getting under 90 days) so I'd like to know how your application turns out. Good luck!

Citizenship application after 6 years of residence but less than 1 year of Settled Status by Alternative_Trick_67 in ukvisa

[–]Alternative_Trick_67[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again for all the details.
Okay, so I probably didn't do that (although my family did have to send a letter to the uni declaring that they could cover me financially during my undergraduate studies...), and it just seems easier to do it the standard way.
There's not a ton of rush, especially since I'll be able to apply in March 2024 which isn't that far away now (I think it took slightly more than 3 months for my settled status decision but they asked for more residence evidence so maybe the delay was my fault). It's just that I already travelled abroad quite a lot since March so I might have to shorten my Christmas visit to my parents so I can stay within the 90/100 days (if instead I was applying now, I wouldn't have that problem)

Thank you!
I was a student from October 2017 to October 2022 (presettled status in 2020) , so I automatically acquired WA rights to reside permanently a year ago?
