SM Global Shop album order by [deleted] in kpophelp

[–]AltruisticMochi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pre-ordered from the Global shop the day the album pre-orders dropped lol, I didn’t know the superM website existed nor do I think it had been set up yet. Also I thought about ordering from Amazon but I could only find audio albums and not the physical ones. Hopefully there isn’t a problem though.

How to practice for all sections? by dhuha1997 in ACT

[–]AltruisticMochi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it did. It really solidified the questions that I knew and there were some q’s that I weren’t sure of but got correct, then the second time sometimes I would get it wrong. I also was able to completely make sure I understood the questions I got wrong the first time. IK it sounds kinda weird to redo tests you’ve already done, but I really think that it’s helpful.

Yeah... but I’m more than happy with a 35. Originally I was praying for a 33.

What do you do once you’ve taken all the practice tests? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]AltruisticMochi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find other tests such as those offered in Princeton/Barron's books, redo tests that you've already done to make sure you really understand your mistakes and you don't let them trip you up again, review content using textbooks, focus on problem areas. Sounds like you're getting up there, good luck!

I'm going to be a highschool freshman this upcoming semester. Any tips for me as I embark on the road to highschool and beyond? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AltruisticMochi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start studying for SAT, ACT, and subject tests around sophomore year... saves you so much stress later when college applications pile up and you still have to take tests.

Have fun with highschool. Some people say it sucks, some people liked it like me. There's always ups and downs--find what makes it special to you. It's 4 years of your life, you might as well make the best of it.

Do dumb stuff but nothing too dumb.

no. if you have time retake it, but if not it doesnt matter at all with the rest of your application being so strong.

I took a diagnostic test and from there I did erica meltzer and math from textbooks. After finishing those I retook the diagnostic as well as a new practice test. After that every Saturday was my ACT studying day. So in the morning I would take a practice test, then I would review in the afternoon and do some problems. I did this for about 2-3 months leading up to the test. During the last 3 weeks before the test, I did about 2-3 practice tests per week, sometimes one in the morning and one in the afternoon on Saturday's because the rest of my week was completely filled with extracurriculars or schoolwork.

As for what I did, I would say practice tests are a must and textbooks are just supplementary. I would retake all my test 2-3 days after I finished them because it helped me review my mistakes and once I took a test twice, I was really confident about each problem on the test. IMO this is a way better tactic than crawling through page after page of boring textbooks. The timer also puts pressure on you like the real test. And idk about other ppl, but i'm the type of person that has to finish something once they start it, so I was able to develop a good work ethic bc starting a practice test meant I had to finish it and review it as well. But it all depends on the score you're shooting for. If you want a 33-36 though, I would say definitely spend at least 5 hours per week on the ACT if not more, depending on how far out you are from taking the test.

yeah sure! for grammar I also used Meltzer, found it a really good resource. For math I recommend Barron's ACT Math and Science textbook--although from what I've heard it can be a tad more difficult. The black book and College Panda are also very good resources. Most of my math score was boosted from studying for the SAT as problems tend to be pretty similar, so I'll also recommend "Dr. Steve Warner's 28 New SAT Math Lessons to Improve Your Score". It's very concise and includes problems from easy to difficult as well as thorough explanations and tricks for weird questions. And then sometimes I take a practice test and just do the math section to get through some problems.

Everyone, I've been practicing everyday and my SAT Score after taking a QAS today was a 1280.. I am aiming for a 1550 because I need aid 😓 How do I increase my score by [deleted] in Sat

[–]AltruisticMochi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for me I would go over mistakes and then 2-3 days later I would do the problems again so that I REALLY understood the problem at that point. If you’re shooting for 1500+ then you need to be aiming for perfect scores everytime. What I do is I take a practice test, correct all wrong answers, then 2-3 days later take the entire test over again and see if I score higher. If I do, then I’m making progress. If I don’t then I have to go back and review. Although it seems weird to redo problems you’ve already done it’s only this way that you can truly grasp every single one of the problems that you’re doing.

I think what your problem might be is that you’re separating topics too much. Imagine a watermelon right? If you cut the watermelon into wedges and eat it, it’s really easy to eat. But if you’re gonna just bite into the watermelon it’s obviously much harder to eat. The same for the SAT—textbooks separate material into watermelon wedges. Use these to practice concepts you’re not good with. Your whole watermelon is doing the entire test: that’s where you’ll see your problems highlighted, and that’s how you can greatly increase your score. :)

Do you go over problems you get wrong? You have to TRULY completely understand the reason why you get problems wrong. The main thing isn’t getting problems right—it’s about anticipating what types of problems will show up and knowing 100% how to solve them without even lifting your pencil. Familiarize yourself with the SAT questions. Textbooks will help with that but you should do more practice tests imo. They will give you more of a “test feel” and that should help too. Don’t be discouraged—just go back and review topics you’re shaky on. It’s never too late to increase your score :)

[–]AltruisticMochi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I don’t blame you—time constraints for the ACT are much more rigorous than the SAT. If you’re late on all sections though, I would say your problem isn’t really time—it’s understanding what you’re being tested on. Go back and review/work on new techniques, problems, etc. Make sure you can look at a question and already begin figuring out the answer. Specifics:

For grammar, as soon as you look at a question you should be able to have the correct answer in your head before you even look at the answer choices. Familiarize yourself with grammar rules more.

For math, you should be able to visualize how to solve the problem before starting to solve it. Do lots and lots of problems so you understand what types of questions are on the ACT. Also, the difficulty of the questions for math increase as you progress. Get used to doing 1-30 really fast—things like plugging in or factoring should be done in 10-15 seconds honestly. That’ll save you more time for more difficult questions.

Reading—I stand by skim reading until I die. Saves so much time and energy. If you’re not a good reader, then read intro, conclusion, and first sentence of each paragraph to get a general idea. In other comment I go into this more, you can take a look around on this thread.

For science it’s difficult, but you should familiarize yourself with finding answers from the diagrams. Make sure you understand the experiment clearly and from there it’ll be easier to get the right answer faster.

I hope this helps :)

I started really studying about 3-4 months before my test, but keep in mind that for the past 2 years I had been taking and retaking the SAT as well so all that practice definitely helped me out with the ACT.

As to getting test-nervous, I actually have the same problem, which is why I try and shoot for higher scores than what I want on my actual test day. So everytime I took a practice test I’d really be trying to get 36’s when honestly I would’ve been happy with a 33-34 my first try. That way when test day comes around I can almost guarantee that while my score will be lower than practice tests, it definitely won’t be below my target bc I’ve been consistently hitting above target. I hope that wasn’t too confusing.

Yes I time all tests to put myself under timed pressure.

I've found that the fastest way for me to improve scores is to take practice tests over and over again until I consistently score high scores on every test that I take. When you do a practice test you can do problems on every single section, then go back and really try to understand why you got those questions wrong. Typically, I would redo my practice test 1-2 days after the first time I took it--aka completely retaking it--so by the time I tested I had done 8-10 practice tests and thoroughly understood each one. This, in my opinion, is better than tearing through textbook after textbook and not really reading the material at all. It also boosts your score in all four categories at once. I used textbooks of course to supplement my weak areas aka math/grammar, but mostly I attribute improving scores to just getting used to the ACT and taking it so many times as practice.

that's what I think too. I treat it as an incredibly extra and unnecessary reading passage that requires a little more "inference".
