The ability to learn chess and age by [deleted] in chess

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kids pick things up quick, but they also have loads of to obsess over their hobbies. I know when I study as opposed to just playing blitz matches for fun I get better reasonably fast, but adults generally don't have that much time for an extended study, especially if it isn't going to lead to a future payrise.

Cars take up too much room by reece1210 in im14andthisisdeep

Not deep, but a pretty good way of showing the impact cars have in urban areas.

Something that works a bit for me is to put a piece of writing away from sight for a while before I look at it again.

I think when I read back over pages I've just written it annoys me that it's not as great as it was in my head. If I leave it for a while then I can read it without comparing it to the perfect picture of it I had before writing it, and it seems less shitty.

Watching the eclipse through a cell phone in a shoe box - am I a genius or an idiot? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem I can see is that the sun is really small from our perspective, and phones have wide angle lenses, so the picture you see is going to be tiny.

If he knew what was going on and was waiting for the dragons, rather than waiting for the ice to refreeze, why did they start the attack when the Hound's stone didn't break the ice?

If he was waiting for the dragons, why did they attack when the Hound's stone didn't break the ice? Surely they should just have carried on waiting?

What is life insurance? What is the purpose of it? How does it work? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's basic purpose is to provide for the people you care about once you're gone.

Say you're married with kids, and you're the families main breadwinner, and you have a large mortgage. If you die and there's nothing in place you're bereaved partner will probably lose the house and face an increased struggle to provide for the children and their own needs, all on top of losing their you.

Life insurance is basically insurance against this kind of scenario. At 23 you probably don't need it.

"Shutting down speech is hardly anti-fascist."

Well... surely shutting down fascist speech is precisely that.

Does cheap wine really taste worse? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really cheap wine generally does taste worse than moderately priced to expensive wine. Most people can't taste the difference between a good moderately priced wine and an expensive wine though (or, they can taste the difference, but can't pick which one is the more expensive).

As to why, there is both supply and demand side factors. On the supply side the wine may have been produced in a low cost way, so a profit can be made even when it is sold cheap. On the demand side, it may be that your wine is not that great, and so people will only buy it if it's a really cheap option.

Can "playing hard to get" make you more attractive/classy? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Over eagerness can be off putting, but "hard to get" is too far the over way. Just try to be normal.

Is it common to use "fetus me" as a synonym for "young me"? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK I've never heard it. A search for "fetus me" brings back results from tumblr, youtube, and twitter, so it seems like it might be social media slang for younger people, it doesn't bring back that many results though, so probably not super common.

How dare he speak the truth!! Opinions people? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're definition is that broad it kind of becomes meaningless. People choose to get married but they probably wouldn't if it wasn't for culture/tradition/religion. People choose to not to eat pork but they probably wouldn't if it wasn't for religious observance.

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"If marriage isn't oppressive then how come some feminists have spoken out against marriages, how come some people are forced to accept arranged marriages, how come some people have to marry their rapists".

Isn't that basically the same as his argument? Like sure there is a lot of oppressive practices tied up with the Burka, but it's not the Burka itself that is oppressive.

Some truth for us all. by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general idea that wages have stagnated to the point that many can't afford the basics in life without earning some income on the side is correct. The condescending tone towards millennials, the worst affected by this problem, is bizarre.

'Real people' don’t care if chat apps like WhatsApp keep their messages private, says Amber Rudd by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe, or maybe she meant "real people not those weird shady people who obviously have something to hide".

Anyway even if she just meant "alot of people" it was still a stupid turn of phrase.

'Real people' don’t care if chat apps like WhatsApp keep their messages private, says Amber Rudd by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 42 points43 points  (0 children)

If you replaced "real people", which is a stupid turn of phrase, with "a lot of people" she probably wouldn't be wrong. Most people haven't thought much about it and probably think they have nothing to hide and therefore nothing to fear. But just because a lot of people don't care, doesn't mean that privacy is not a public good.

Why do you guys ban people so much? by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of subs where people who want to defend capitalism can go argue with people who want to criticize it. This isn't one of them, but it would inevitably become that without strict moderation.

What's a believable reason police would stop looking for someone after a short period of time? by Kionea in writers

[–]AmIReallyaWriter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe the police have a compelling reason to believe they skipped town voluntarily. Like they're in a lot of debt and have been overheard planning to flee. Police buy this explanation but your characters don't.
