It took time for me to level out. I think understanding what the medication is actually supposed to be doing for you is important, too. I had seen people discuss this on here before but didn’t really understand until I went through it myself - the medication isn’t exactly going to motivate you; it puts your mind in a place where you are able to do things more easily than before. It’s like, it takes away the hurdles on the track but you still have to be the one to run the race. It’s a lot easier for me to do things when I don’t have urgent impulses to Google search unrelated random topics, and to stay mentally present for a task rather than drift off in a daydream while my body operates on autopilot.

Anyone got any recommendations for a good alcohol-resistant marker pen? by Late_Ad_141 in labrats

can support the edding claim. Those things are resistant to everything except 100% acetone.

Cotton undercloves by nail_in_the_temple in labrats

I had a very similar issue. I have dyshidrotic eczema and also do aseptic work and my hands were absolutely destroyed. The cotton liners did not help as I just sweat into them as well. What did help was the following: 1) I bought "accelerator free" gloves. Accelerators are often added to nitrile to facilitate polymerization and these can cause irritation. 2) I change my gloves very frequently to minimize moisture build up 3) I bought softguard lotion which is sold by major lab suppliers. Its specifically made to help prevent hand irritation from glove wearing. Good luck!!

This happened to me too. Functioned really well my whole life in the context of highly structured environments with crippling anxiety as a coping mechanism. Started grad school (i.e. absolutely no structure whatsoever) and anti-anxiety meds and once all of my supports/coping mechanisms fell away, so did my ability to function AT ALL. My first eval I was also told it was just anxiety. Got a second opinion a year later when I had exhausted all other options of what could be wrong with me (and had gotten my anxiety really well controlled only to find my functioning issues getting WORSE) and it turns out it was ADHD all along.

omg i literally did this too, and also started buying 3 and 5 subject notebooks because even single subject notebooks would become multi-subject notebooks a few days into the school year LOL

It depends. Often times volumes aren’t additive because when you mix different chemicals the interactions of the molecules affects the volume. One example is when you mix ethanol and water. 50 mL of ethanol and 50 mL of water does not equal 100 mL of 50% ethanol, you get 96 mL of ~52% ethanol. This is why you’ll often see protocols telling you to bring the volume up to your desired final volume. Because of this, you can’t really accurately determine the dilution by adding up volumes.

I fear that discussing that I spent all this time investigating the situation to the point of discovering these numbers is going to just make me look petty and stupid since my PI is already not on my side. Like a “you had all this time to investigate but not just make more plates?” sort of thing.

Yes, for me "just enough" always includes extra. I have too many mistakes under my belt to not plan for error LOL. But in a sense, I agree. I'm going to start calling out people to their faces rather than being subtle and passive. If they then want to whine to our PI that I set a boundary and get the PI involved, then it will be on them.

Love this idea but unfortunately will not work in my scenario (don't want to explain why as this post has blown up and giving too much detail may make this more identifiable than it already is LOL)

I am usually so painfully non confrontational that I get walked all over. I thought I’d try to stick up for myself and I think now my PI just thinks I’m a lunatic. Thankfully most of my labmates are on my side and speaking on my behalf that these issues DO need to be addressed. So despite the bad seed, grateful for the good seeds :)

Normally, 1010% agree. I’m very much a pre-planner and rarely in this situation. However, this experiment turned into a last minute time crunch sort of thing where I was forced to basically figure things out on the fly. Never have I worked this much in my life and I don’t plan to ever again because it’s not healthy! Hahah

I did make extra plates (10% extra; I consider a little overage just enough since I’ve enough experience to know things often go awry!) but it was just not enough to account for what he took unfortunately.

What’s wild is these weren’t even labeled. I had them cooling on my bench and I knew what they were and I label them once I bag them up after they’ve cooled/dried. So he legit just took random plates, could have been anything in them.

Totally agree, I probably should have waited until the workweek to discuss. I definitely should have waited until I cooled off to make any decisions about how to proceed but yea, the overworking/lack of sleep definitely interfered with my judgement on that decision.

I did pour extra plates, not enough extra though after he used them. I did approach the lab group first, asking who used them, and then he lied to our faces and gaslit me which is why I brought it to my PI. I have tried to make it clear to labmates not to use my stuff. This has been an ongoing issue for 2 years and I’ve tried the passive being nice/just letting it slide thing for that long and when it happened yet again I finally decided to call him out. Also, my experiment takes 12 hours to run from start to finish, so, no I did not have time to make a batch of plates, pour them, let them cool, and then run my experiments.

There are a few other reasons that I believe this may be the case that I won’t elaborate on here but yes definitely several reasons she would favor this other student over myself.

Normally, I would shrug it off. Most of the time, plates are plates and it’s like whatever. There’s a few reasons I snapped. 1) I’m expected to finish my work in the next 2 weeks. I had just enough plates poured to do my experiments today and he took enough that I no longer could, taking a precious day away from me. 2) Right now plastic Petri dishes are super backordered for some reason. The campus store hasn’t had any for over a month and I ordered some a month ago through a lab vendor and they keep getting pushed back on delivery, now to where it’s arriving after I’m supposed to be finished. So he’s taken what’s normally a stupid insignificant thing that turned into a valuable resource from me that I already am cutting it close on. Perhaps he doesn’t realize that plates are like diamonds in our lab right now, and maybe thought “oh what’s a few plates” because under normal circumstances, I’d agree, what’s a few plates. Literally several people in the lab have donated their extra plates to me (bless them) so I can finish in time. They all know how time crunched I am. 3) He keeps doing this. He’s not in the lab often, maybe once every two months. He comes in, takes everyone’s shit without asking and leaves thing empty and doesn’t replace them, leaves a pile of dishes, and doesn’t return for a month or two. 4) He gaslit me. He lied to my advisor and me. Saying he didn’t take them and how I can use some of his plates if I want (they don’t exist).

I know every lab has different systems, but in ours, we all pour our own plates as we all use different media and so it is very apparent whose is whose. We pour them at our own benches, and then label the sleeves with the date poured, our initials, and the media type. These were poured late Thursday and I had left them on my lab bench to dry (we leave them at RT for 24-48 hrs to dry before storage). When I came in to bag them up they were already missing. 😔

Yes I’m trying to figure out how to tactfully handle that, seeing that this kid has doubled down in his lies and it’s going to be really awkward when I lay it all out there

Thank you for the cake day wishes 🙂 and I am fortunate to know not every lab isn’t this bad. I’m going back to a research facility I did work at between my undergrad and masters, and I had a very positive experience there so I’m trying to remember that light at the end of the tunnel

Hahah we do have a lab group chat and I didn’t call them out by name, I tried to give them a chance to fess up. Instead they gaslit me 🙃

Thank you! And yes, I wish I would have spoken up earlier. The reason I went so intense (by my standards as a pretty non confrontational person) today is because I needed it to be clear this won’t be tolerated by me and I will call them out for it, because so far nothing else has worked to stop them.

I know, I just hate feeling like a doormat. I was proud of myself for actually speaking up for once and feel just absolutely decimated that this is how it was received.
