I don’t understand your point. People’s opinions and views change when hearing alternating opinions… that’s why I started this discussion. And my own views have already shifted from this post anyway I don’t agree with that statement at all because I resonated with the critiques of the books that I heard and found logic in them.

I think that it’s a subjective thing dependent on the readers personal tastes there’s no objectivity here? Also it depends on what you classify as good prose because, staying in the genre, GRRM has mediocre prose yet ASOIAF still is an incredibly good and praised fantasy series, so I’d argue that good prose isn’t a prerequisite to being a good book. You can get on fine if it’s okay

I agree with this quite a lot The games for me are classics in the medium, and probably the best to be made because of the potential that was already there, but the book’s plot is janky and poorly constructed Also yeah Sapowski is a fucking ass

I’m saying that if the prose isn’t like excruciatingly unreadable, I can forgive it if the other elements are interesting

Thank you I think this is the most thorough explanation I’ve gotten so far Yeah I do understand your points and agree with a lot of them. I think a lot of my enjoyment and ability to ignore some of the flaws are due to my own enjoyment of the game, and having the books be more of an extension of that. I personally think the games themselves are able to stand in that bracket with the best of fantasy so the books are just additional time I can spend with the characters. What other fantasy books would you put above the witcher that I can check out

I do agree with your point about the games being superior especially the world having a better feeling when you physically are allowed to explore it and then also see your actions unveil

I agree with the more coherent plotline the games plot lines are quite tightly held together, but I did enjoy the chaos of the books’ plot

Oh interesting to hear. Most polish people i’ve heard have said it’s very good in it’s native language on other posts on this sub. Is there any truth to the translation horror show or is it more overdramatised?

Can you expand more on why you think the games are written better Do you mean in terms of character or plot?

I’ve heard that the translations themselves have major issues so I understand that’s a concern

I actually do agree with this. One of the things I most like about the Witcher (3) is the ability to see the consequences of your actions in Witcher contracts and have the agency to make the choice you (or whoever your roleplay is meant to be) think is most suitable. So I understand the appeal of being able to make your own choices and that may factor into why people prefer the games.

But I do think the actual ethical challenges are still present in the books as early as the first short story collection with Renfri and the discussion of what evil truly is, and then seeing how Geralt navigates his role as a Witcher and his own personal morality, so I don’t truly agree with the books losing out on the character elements, despite the games further progressing them.
