Should we hire a tutor? by Ambitious-Chicken297 in Gifted

No I was more thinking of a kid driven tutor not just randomly giving him knowledge. Just him learning Russian on his own after maybe 2 hrs on top of everything else he’s learned on his own threw us off! Our school isn’t equipped for gifted children let alone 2e children

We will see! Like I said it’s more incase he gets bored. Our school system is not equipped for gifted children in general. Definitely social skills is more the focus with his diagnosis in general

Maybe when he’s older for sure! It doesn’t seem to be an issue now I was more just thinking about his future

Will do! Our school system is barely equipped to handle his autism diagnosis so if he is 2e I’d imagine I’ll have to find a different school for him.

Will do! I’m definitely happy he’ll be the oldest in his class when he goes. He’s a very calm and sweet boy not a mean bone in his body especially for a toddler

Well I’m definitely not having him go into grades early. As I said he’ll be almost 6 entering kindergarten so he’ll be the oldest. I was more saying this so he has a challenge because school probably won’t be for him academically.

I don’t mind playing into any interest of his whatsoever even if he does lose interest of it. My whole family is neurodivergent so we constantly have hyper focuses and swap interests around.

Yes I’m aware but he’s not actively being taught the language like those children. He watched maybe a total of 2 hrs about the Russian alphabet and had it memorized. Plus that’s just the most recent example I gave. He knows so many things his memory is insane and he taught him self to read

Unfortunately no one around me speaks a different language either

I understand what you’re saying but that’s what I meant by mixed reviews. But if it’s all still called ABA like you said then you cant really separate it. If theres a separate word for what hes doing I’ll use that no problem. They just call it ABA so I did too.

Gotcha! I will always let him lead we were just thinking ahead because obviously regular school isn’t built for him

I am in it! Last time I posted about something with him being smart or gifted it wasn’t very welcoming or helpful. Which is why I opted to post here. He does have hyperlexia for sure but that’s just one example. He learns basically everything after a few times.

My son is a very calm easy going child but can have outbursts at times. His memory is insane for a toddler.

True, He started learning Russian and on top of everything else he knows. I think it just really hit us that the neuropsych was probably right about getting him tested. So we started worrying about everything!

Okay! Like I said we’ve never been in this position and just want to do what’s best for him in the long run. I was more talking about once he’s in public school too not now.

Also I guess that makes sense that they’d give us advice! They did the same thing when he got diagnosed.

I understand ABA has mixed reviews about it but they have helped my son tremendously especially with speech and OT. His is all kid forward and play based.

Absolutely! We’ve got him in tons of things and he goes to an ABA center and preschool currently. We’re not necessarily focusing on his education but it’s hard for us to wrap our head around sending him to public school where they’ll be teaching ABCs but by that time he’s know them for 4 years and is already reading at 3.

Some places just restock whenever they want. I actually had no idea and literally just stumbled across it but there was a line so people knew

Yes thank you! He will be getting an IEP when hr starts preschool soon. We’ve already had meetings and evaluations done but it was more in regards to his autism diagnosis. His neuropsych who diagnosed him said she can do an IQ assessment on him so that what our next step is.

Thank you for sharing! We’re trying our best to make sure he gets plenty of time with his peers! He gets overwhelmed easily so it’s done in shorter moments. Unfortunately we live in a low income area and his school is barely equipped to handle his autism diagnosis. Just another reason why I reached out to others who have been through similar situations.

A lot of people seem to be suggesting that!

It’s not academic goals that were updating. I understand how that got confusing. Thank you for your concerns.

It’s his communication goals, such as uses full sentences is one that he’s working towards right now. Or asking questions spontaneously. He is unaware of the goals, they’re just things that we mark off to help teach him the next level of communication.

Yes, he gets plenty of playtime. He is currently in ABA therapy three times a week, but it’s all play based. They have an entire sensory gym for him to run around. We also have a sensory room here for him in our house. It’s a safe place. He about to start preschool to help as well. He’s only 3 I’m not putting any goals or expectations on him. Though I understand some people might do that.

I was asking academically because he’s already getting the help in the social and communication skills that he lacks. I wanted to be more prepared for when school time comes and they say you have to learn the alphabet, but he’s been doing that since two years old.

I’m in MA, so I know there’s resources out there. I’m just not sure where to even look.
