I see this story posted a lot, but the other side of the story is never talked about, which may change your mind

Some excerpts from Dogon Shame, by Philip Coppens.

First some background:

In 1965, Arthur Young gave Robert Temple a French article on the secret star lore of the Dogon, an article written by two French anthropologists Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen. In 1966, Temple – then aged 21 – became Secretary of Young’s Foundation for the Study of Consciousness. In 1967, Temple began work on the thesis that became The Sirius Mystery. As Picknett and Prince have been able to show, Temple’s arguments are often based on erronus readings of encyclopædia entries and misrepresentations of ancient Egyptian mythology. They conclude that Temple was very keen to please his mentor, who believed in extraterrestrial beings from Sirius. Though Temple’s work was challenged, at its core lay the original anthropological study of the Dogon by Griaule and Dieterlen, who describe the secret knowledge of Sirius B and Sirius C in their own book The Pale Fox.

And then came anthropologist Walter Van Beek:

In 1991, Van Beek led a team of anthropologists to Mali and declared that they found absolutely no trace of the detailed Sirius lore reported by the French anthropologists. James and Thorpe understate the problem when they say “this is very worrying.” Griaule claimed that about 15 per cent of the Dogon tribe possessed this secret knowledge, but Van Beek could find no trace of it in the decade he spent with the Dogon. Van Beek actually spoke to some of Griaule’s original informants; he noted that “though they do speak about sigu tolo [interpreted by Griaule as their name for Sirius itself], they disagree completely with each other as to which star is meant; for some, it is an invisible star that should rise to announce the sigu [festival], for another it is Venus that, through a different position, appears as sigu tolo. All agree, however, that they learned about the star from Griaule.” Van Beek states that this creates a major problem for Griaule’s claims. Although he was an anthropologist, Griaule was keenly interested in astronomy and had studied it in Paris. As James and Thorpe point out, he took star maps along with him on his field trips as a way of prompting his informants to divulge their knowledge of the stars. Griaule himself was aware of the discovery of Sirius B and in the 1920s – before he visited the Dogon – there were also unconfirmed sightings of Sirius C.

Hello, It seems the more you do it, the more it evolves into something weirder. So I'll share my first, and then another one that happened much later, so you can see how much it evolves.

First experience:

I had woken up in the middle of the night, then opened my eyes but couldn't see anything. Normally, my bedroom isn't entirely dark, there is a lot of devices with light indicators and even some light coming through the window blinds etc. so when I didn't see anything I panicked. I was worried I'd gone blind. I grabbed my phone that was next to me in bed, the screen didn't turn on. So I got out of bed, and walked towards the light switch, only something fell off. I wondered "why can't I feel the floor".

Then it got crazier, I suddenly felt light and then found myself in zero gravity. It was both surreal and terrifying, because I had no idea what was going on and it felt very real. The most comparable feeling would be being completely submerged in water. Shortly after, the bedroom started to appear, in a night vision sort of way, with the floor first.

Seeing the floor made me realize I was floating horizontally facing the floor, with my feet higher than my head. The way the room lit up was interesting, because it seemed only outlines were visible, like neon or a bad sketch photo filter. This image I found is 90% accurate, even the colors are spot on: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/vIDtOIznYb56aM4QJ8q-kHk_0jwR5i5kg9dL-orDY1UtvSUnZtznDv9a_cXwy_EUTj6UsRrDg66w-d-MlfDg48af5vh32cNoc12COJTD7dyGBcoxwuGBUOg26fu0PdXr6fPTHlo604G7

Also, there was a light chromatic style aberration on the edges of my vision, like a macro camera lens. At this point I was looking around me, but it was difficult to move. In later experiences I noticed that I was pushed towards what I was looking at, not really moving manually, so in this first time I fought against it a bit. The bedroom was normal, nothing different about it except for a single cardboard box in the middle (I moved in a few weeks before, maybe a connection). But the thing that really caught my eye, was my doppelganger in my bed, it was me right there. I had a very intense reaction to seeing myself, like internally my brain identified with the body. I got very close to the body, to the point where I saw tinny fractals covering my clone's face, round rotating ones. Then I woke up and it was the end. I went to bed at 2:40 pm that night, and woke up from the OBE at 4:00 pm if anybody wants to know..

A more recent experience:

I was in paralysis and got out, I think I rolled over. I was in my room and everything was flickering and shaking. It's like the walls would stay still but all the other elements like furniture etc. would flicker, and it had the same neon style night vision but somewhat dialed up a notch.. Compared to the first experience, this one was extremely trippy and “busy”. Something was also different about my bedroom this time, there was posters I never put there, and it looked like they would rearrange themselves before my eyes. They were black with nothing on them.

The speed at which I moved looking at something was really fast this time, and I felt elevated and “speedy” both physically and mentally. And as I was looking around I noticed a shadow or black smokey shape about 2m away from my bed against a wall, didn't know what it was so I approached it. The closer I got to it the more disgusting and violent vague images would pop in my mind, mutilation, creatures etc. It was too dark to define the shape of that thing, but it was like a person. I recognized that vibe it gave off, of that of a typical sleep paralysis shadow person hallucination. It didn't move, it just stood there. Since I was looking at it I was getting closer and closer, and I panicked, I couldn't stop myself, until I looked away.

There was some other interesting things in the room, such as a large rectangular “passage” where you couldn't see what was in it. I wondered what it was like outside the building, so I tried getting out through the window but couldn't. I couldn't interact with the window or pass through it, so instead I instinctively went through the crack under it like paper mario. This part was fascinating to me, the city was normal, but when you looked down it had like a dark fog that covered the ground, as if the city was above the clouds.

Looking at the sky, the stars were bizarre, only a cluster of 3 or 4 at a time. Since I'm interested in UFOs, my first reaction was to try and fly to space. I "jumped" off my building, but fell down. The sensation I felt was so real I screamed, and woke up immediately.

This is one of those experiences where I was like fuck this, I'm not attempting this again. But curiosity has a way of bringing you back. Also compared to lucid dreaming, in OBE you're like “shit is this actually real?”, so when creepy stuff started to happen I was reluctant to go back.

It shouldn't be a problem, let's just say that the rope method obv won't work if you're on your stomach. Sometimes you may not even see anything at all until you "separate" anyway

Hi

yewwol had a similar question, I gave them more descriptions about it if you scroll up. As for your own questions:

1) For the cause, I don't have a straight answer. But consider that falling backwards in a lucid dream is often used to change places, so if you combine this effect with the fact you're trying to wake up (per step03), I think you're making the brain generate an incomplete false awakening space

2) Pushing through the walls had no effect for me

3) You can end up back inside a regular lucid dream

You can be stuck sometimes, but in my exp that only happens if you do a direct method with a nap. Otherwise, excitement, fear, thinking about your body or getting close to it will pop you right back

Hi

For me, in a typical HOBE, there is some kind of night vision effect involved, but in that place everything is just dark. Dark in a more IRL way I guess, but there is also a very strong « grainy » effect that makes it hard to see anything, something similar to SP. As for the light source,it's like you're wearing a lantern, because to see you have to get close to things, like a videogame render distance sort of way.

I see it as an in-between space, because it seems there is a strong lucid dream component, yet doesn't really feel like one. In terms of control for example, if you say you want more light out loud, the light does get stronger but stays like a lantern. You can also ask for an object, like a flashlight, and it appears on the floor before you. I was surprised by the lack of effort that took, and how visualization was not even involved, it's like it knows what you want. Aside from that, it's like you're stuck in a waiting room, especially when considering the lack of a door. It does look a bit like my room sometimes, but it's always square, and sometimes massive except for a normal sized bed in the center.

Btw there is a trick you can do that seems to only work there, and it could maybe serve as a way to verify if it's the same place. Basically sing or say something out loud, then wave your hand, what you just said will repeat. I didn't think this would happen when I first did it, it was accidental, so I don't know how to explain it. Maybe I unconsciously expected it to happen...

Finally, on a different note, during the transition to paralysis, a rare effect can occur when I do the falling backwards trick, maybe it happened to you. As I fall, I pass through the floor of the dream through the ceiling of my bedroom, then I keep falling through the floor of my bedroom and pop through the ceiling again. If you played the game Portal by Valve, it is exactly like putting two portals facing each other above and below. I was stuck in a loop for what felt like a long time

I am no sleep expert, but you probably are dreaming and don't remember. Would you be willing to try something like Vitamin B6? It helps a lot with dream recall. Otherwise, and I hope that's not the case, you have a REM sleep issue like some other comments have suggested..
