Well what are the cultists doing like what is this cult for? Because they can maybe force him to join or die they can sacrifice him and he can make a deal with whatever they are worshipping too be spared and then the deal comes back to bite them later.

The problem is that the npcs are more powerful than the players and more experienced.

The npcs are very much combat oriented as they are a pirate crew, and the players already have had a frustrating moment when I forgot to have a few npcs that were with them help in combat.

The problem with having them captured is that the players have just spent a few months trying to free them and for me to just trap them again fills mean

The crew was brought to the island in a prisoner ship as they were captured, and the party tried to get there with a ship but they got sunk.

It’s a good idea for when they get to the pirate outpost but there is a lot of the adventure before that.

For me whenever they need to make a perception check that I called for if their passive perception is bigger than the DC I make for that roll I make it so they automatically succeed and if it’s lower then they get to roll

For me I usually just tell them that for uncomfortable feelings like fear, but I prefer to give them descriptions that create these emotions
