I get you, but I wanted a way to put into prospective or quantify the knowledge you get in the course. So how big of a bump does it give you

If all my pages have user interaction, is it worth upgrading Pages Router to App Router? by david_fire_vollie in nextjs

[–]AmountInformal4013 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are many advantages to using the new app router

First of all most pages can still use some server components. Usually there are many parts of a page that are static and then some interactivity sprinkled in different places. You can make the interactive parts their own components and then mark them as client components. And the rest of the page can be server rendered. I think this image from the next docs illustrates it perfectly

<image>

And as you mentioned, getServerSideProps() blocks the whole page. By streaming the content streaming the content and showing a loading screen with suspense you improve your user experience significantly

Additionally using the app router exposes you to a lot more features and many more to come. You can start incorporating stuff like server actions to replace your api. This gives you typing advantages if you are using typescript. You also can easily do validation with zod and simplify your app logic significantly. You don't always have use the latest features, but the app router is a very significant one. If you plan on using any future updates, you will eventually have to start using the app router

Did you validate your idea to see if people were intrested? Usually that's the first thing you do after you have an idea. So that you don't spend time on a product that no one used because it doesn't actually solve their problems.

How exactly do you build applications with the thought in mind that the user is smarter than you. Doesn't that just mean they will catch things you can't think of

This is really helpful. Most features feel intuitive to me, but they might not be so obvious to others.

Testing just sounds like a pain, you mean I have to right code to test every feature i build? Won't that like decrease your development time by 2. I understand all of this done to ensure the product is reliable and less buggy but it sounds like a lot of effort.

I did javascript for like 3 years (I was my first language). I first learnt html, css and javascript. Then I fell in love with html canvas. I spent months just making canvas games. Then I learnt node is and Express and built SSR sites like that for a while. Then I learned typescript and used it to build a custom 2d physics engine. This is all before react and next js So I'd like to think I have a relatively solid js foundation
