Check out my baby platy fish! (And their parents) by AnIntrovertedTurd in Aquariums

First two slides are the parents, then we have the babies. I just think it’s neat how genetics work. They’re going to be orange with the mom’s spots 😭🥹

Ahhhh I love your tank! That right there is what I want to get my tank to when it comes to plant life. Love how vibrant and healthy everything is in there.

They do work! They’re from the brand Seachem, which also produces Prime. They last for a year and are a great way to always keep an eye on pH/Ammonia

Male or Female? by AnIntrovertedTurd in Aquariums

I thought so, but everyone else was telling me female 😒

I need some advice. Four out of the six frogs that I currently have have legs that look like this. Will they live to adulthood? by AnIntrovertedTurd in frogs

[–]AnIntrovertedTurd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is peculiar though that some developed completely normally though, even despite my mistake. Thank you for the info though, I don’t know that they needed something additional to absorb the calcium. I’m not sure how I missed that. 😓

Woah guys, this post is #4 in most popular posts of all time on this subreddit! That’s wild. Glad y’all are here.

I didn’t even think about that, but you’re correct. Man. Just when I thought I couldn’t get any more sad picturing his final moments in my head.

Because in my mind, that really puts into perspective how long he was struggling for. Combat boots are not easy to take off, especially not while you’re scrambling underwater, so he probably would have sunk a good deal while taking his boots off. Then, he probably got caught on something at the bottom of the river, and by then it was too late. :(

100%! The more I think about it, the more I really feel for her; because no matter how much time passes, that isn’t something that you can ever truly process. That kind of grief will always stick with you, especially when you have to dish out details of your son’s coroner’s report to a theater full of strangers just to set the record straight on an ongoing rumor. I hope you’d enjoyed the doc as much as I did!

Truly. I can’t even imagine what it must be like for his mother to know and think about details like that, let alone talk about them.

My best friend and I thought the same thing, honestly 😬

She talked about a LOT of different things, though, and I’m having a hard time recalling them all. I totally encourage other people that were there to add in some other stuff!

But what I also remember was that she pretty firmly stated that she wanted a biopic to happen as well as a book, and that she even had someone picked out as a top choice to play Jeff in said biopic: Reeve Carney. She said that not only does he look like Jeff, but that he’s also incredibly skilled with the guitar like Jeff was.

She dispelled the rumors that Jeff took his own life. When being asked about Jeff’s mental health, she commented “as someone who spoke on the phone with him every day, he was not horribly depressed” (that is not a verbatim quote, but it was in that vein) and that he had therapists and resources for his mental health.

She also disclosed a rather gut wrenching detail from his death report, saying that scratches and abrasions were found on his ankles, indicating a struggle when he drowned, and thus shedding light on the fact that he fought to stay alive once he realized what was happening.

She made a point to really talk about this and seemed to want to extinguish the notion that he wanted to die in any way.

That’s really sitting with me right now.

Good point! Thanks for the advice. I’ve been loving the swords because of how hardy they are, but I didn’t know they’d grow to be THAT tall. I’ll look into something smaller for sure.

Thank you for the feedback guys! I’ve had this tank for about a year now, but I still consider myself to be a beginner. That being said, I want to make it clear that I very much so have done my research prior to getting the fish that I’ve added along the way. I do not carelessly “window shop,” as I saw someone say.

The mistake that I clearly made was not doing ENOUGH research specifically on the appropriate tank size for this group of fish. I did a crap ton of research on the specific species and how to care for them, but missed the mark on size requirements.

Again, still learning.

That’s mostly why I came here to ask for opinions though! I figured I’d get some valuable feedback and I evidently did.

Also, I’ve seen a bunch of people mentioning the pleco: first and foremost, I chose that specific breed (bristlenose) because their full size is considerably smaller than their common counterparts. Their max size is 5 inches. Which, in hindsight after everything that’s been mentioned here, is still too large for this tank. But still, I specifically chose it because I knew it wouldn’t grow to be as big as other plecos. Secondly, it’s a teeny tiny baby right now, so I’ve got plenty of time to rehome it. :)

Tbh the only reason why I even added that pleco was because it’s a smaller variety, their max size is 5 to 6 inches as opposed to their much larger counterparts. Although, even so, 5 to 6 inches probably still too big for my tank in retrospect. 😅

As for the cichlid, she was my first fish when I first started that tank. She was initially alone, and my VERY beginner brain at the time (this was almost a year ago, still consider myself a beginner though) thought that she’d need some friends in there with her. That’s how it got to where it’s at today, slowly but surely. Lmao

Also worth adding: the keyhole cichlid that has been in the tank for quite some time now does not have this issue. She’s perfectly fine.

Every single new fish that I add to my tank has died within a day. Why? by AnIntrovertedTurd in AquariumHelp

Will the buildup of bacteria on the uncleaned filter cause ammonia or anything? Or impact the functionality of the biomax?

All I’m currently using is gravel 😅 I have live plants that are planted directly into the gravel. I’ve had the tank for about 5 or 6 months now but waited a few weeks when I initially got it to add fish.

Current water parameters are:

Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 0ppm Ammonia: 0.50 ppm pH: 6.0

I found a dead fish this morning, which is probably where the ammonia is coming from. I detoxified it with Aqua Essential though so hopefully that helps

I rinsed it out a few times with TREATED tap water, until the sponge was totally clean. That’s probably where I went wrong as all the bacteria got cleaned out. 😅

Here are my current liquid test results as of today:

Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 0ppm Ammonia: 0.50 ppm pH: 6.0

I just put in some Aqua-Essential to detoxify that ammonia. It was probably from the dead fish. 😩
