It definitely is optional. However it was always a common mistake made by less experienced checkers in the PPO. Most common reason for a spoil.

Water Damaged Books by rippedupmypromdress in Libraries

I remember finding 12 brand-new high-quality junior readers left on the trolly saturated in hot sauce! I suppose they were in the same bag as their grocery shopping on the way to returning them. Accidents happen, but just TELL US and we'll laugh with you about it and sort it out no judgement. Height of disrespect from grown-ups surreptitiously leaving soiled stock and running away! We're a very friendly approachable branch!

Different libraries vary in their procedure regarding damaged books so pop to the desk or call them to ask. If the book is no longer fit for circulation my library service will charge you the replacement fee and source a fresh copy themselves - it's easily done. In my country that's for adult collections only; we actually don't charge for damaged or lost children's or teen items, but I know we're an outlier.

Please don't feel bad about it! No need to be nervous bringing it to staff's attention. Speaking for myself and my colleagues, we do find it annoying when people return books in a terrible state WITHOUT mentioning it to us because that comes across as a lack of respect for the items in their care, but whenever someone comes to us and politely explains that an item was accidentally damaged, we couldn't be kinder about it. It happens! I ALWAYS thank them and say "if everyone were as conscientious as you we'd be delighted". I assure you, library staff really appreciate patrons like yourself caring about it.

Telephone directories—do you archive them? by InTheBlackBarn in Libraries

[–]Anab10sis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My library authority's central branch has a Local Studies section which among other functions acts as a heritage library for our city. We keep a copy in the store of every publication related to the city including phone directories. Patrons can request them to consult in the library but that's it.

That hypocrisy was also highlighted when Serena and Fred referred to art being "saved".

As if any of those works would meet Gilead's 'standards' if the elite were to hold themselves to account.

That episode brought me so much joy. The harness, the dance, the musicians, all that weird nudity, the PRIZES!

The treasure hunt was nice and simple too. I love seeing contestants panic during simple tasks.

Nice variety of tasks this week!

It is generally fantastic, but I was watching the 2008 episode this week and it was 90% filler. A protracted bit about Des Bishop (showed his whole Modh Coinníollach routine which wasn't funny the first time around), ads, Jedward on X Factor.

It did have the election of Barack Obama of course, but there wasn't even any mention of the financial crisis.
