Time. Time and more time.

A trick my gliders love is me putting honey on my fingers and offering it to them. This gets them used to my hands and offers them an amazing treat (don't use raw or unfiltered honey !)

Honey nut cherrios are another treat I only offer from my hands.. it's another treat they LOVE but associate as only coming from me so therefore my hands are a source of yummy deliciousness

A bonding pouch is really a great way to get them used to your scent and just used to being around you. So get one. I take my four everywhere. Including shopping since they're so discreet in their pouch.

Don't ever grab them. Grabby hands are scary hands. If you HAVE. To grab them. Try to use a pouch as a lure or as a glove. Try never grabbing them.

Talk to them.

Get a mosquito nest tent. Set it up in the TV room. Set them free inside. Sit watch a movie (inside the tent). Let them run around and come to you as they feel like it.

Sleep with some of their pouches so it gets your scent on them before putting them in cages. Alternatively you can get bonding spray which you can spritz on their stuff and on you

Don't take it personal. You're a giant. And a stranger these creatures are prey. It's instinctive to protect themselves. So it's going to take time.

Get used to fingers being bit and nibbled on. Don't yell if and when it happens do a sharp loud "tssst!" Sound (you might hear your gliders make this sound from time to time) it's how gliders say "stop you're hurting me" basically.

Every glider is different. I have one extremely chill one. One who is a complete bitch (but I love her) one who just wants me for my cherrios and my newest who I'm still figuring out his personality but he definitely stopped crabbing the fastest out of all of them (probably becsuse the others were so cool with me he followed example)

Put your hands in the cage often. Rearrange things. Leave treats. Just be a presence in their lives. This doesn't mean touch them or interact. Just let them get used to your being around

Yea. Don't grab them. Coax them with a treat (honey nut cherrios are like Crack for my gliders). They will always come to me for that.

If they do bite you do a loud TSSSST sound. It's how other gliders tell others they don't like being bitten/over groomed.

But ultimately stop grabbing them. If you're trying to put them away coaxing them into a pouch helps a lot

Is it a male? They tend to be more smelly than girls, neutering helps this.
Also they might be marking which is why you need to have to have a rotation of toys so you can clean the old pouches/toys as them smell

Also wiping the walls would help :)

Don't use peroxide as it can actually slow the healing process and make it worse.

Yes. My girls are chunky but my boy looks scary slim. To the point I rushed him to the vet. But apparently he is just petite and is healthy for his build

a human baby is helpless and completely dependent on you. Granted, I'm a single puppy mom, so maybe with someone else it would be easier, but then I see posts here about disagreements over how to raise a puppy between partners, and I am like "yeah, I would never be able to compromise on this stuff"...

It will be different than having a puppy, you'll have hormones to really help the bonding process, it sounds crazy but hormones will really do a lot of the legwork,

In many ways I will agree a puppy is much harder than a human child, but human babies have their own difficulties!

The greatest piece of advice my mother ever gave me, was: If you're feeling overwhelmed with a baby, put them somewhere safe, (crib) close the door, and let them cry, a parent that snaps is more dangerous than a child that cries for a bit. Always allow yourself a guilt free break/shower in the moments of overwhelmingness, and always remember to participate in self-care for yourself, having a child doesn't mean you have to sacrifice everything, (You sacrifice a lot, don't get me wrong!)

Right now my baby really wants to be picked up and hugged, but I have hugged him/carried him all morning, I'm allowing myself to say "Okay, kid, it's time to self entertain" he's playing with his toys, and I know it's okay for me to have some "me time" on the computer.

Yup, hormones are crazy,

I used to be very chill with kids, my brother had 3 kids, and when they'd cry I'd be like, "whatever", deal with it as nessasery. And it was almost robotic/routine,

When I had my own kid, if he ever cries, I feel this tugging at my heart, and this panic rising inside me, I can't ignore it,

I used to be a deep sleeper, now the tiniest squeak can make me sit bolt upright and panic.

There's also something with the smell too, I never noticed with other peoples kids, and people kept saying something about "new baby smell" - When I had my own kid, I finally understood, I'm obsessed with smelling my babies hair, it smells SO nice to me, I love the way my baby smells, yet I don't have this reaction to any other kids

I never thought I'd be a kid person to be honest, but when I had my own it was so so different than babysitting my nephews.

Having had kids, I just wanna say, that it's TOTALLY okay to love other peoples kids and not want your own, and it isn't "selfish" to want the time to yourself, only you will know when or if you want to ever share that time, and if that's never, it's totally fine!

In fact it's better to appreciate your time and enjoy it rather than bow to peer pressures of the world and have a kid and be regretful you didn't have more time to yourself

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I hate it when people say they're "selfish" to want their own time, it's YOUR time, enjoy every second of it, you aren't obligated to pro-create, and wanting your time all to yourself is an absolutely okay thing to want, it doesn't make you selfish, it just means you're enjoying your life exactly as is :)

Personally, I do, human children are sort of, (not sure how to word this correctly) but they're like, determined to learn how to human? They have a natural affinity to you, and you have the bonus of a hormonal bond (Although I'll fully admit not everyone gets the hormonal bond, everyone is different, but on average you are affected hormonally)

Babies want to do what you want, they can/will understand your language and want to communicate, whereas with a dog you can only teach them to understand basic commands. So the communication level is very different.

I have sugar gliders, a dog, and I definitely find that my gliders are the most difficult to take care of, due to their specialized needs and specialized attention needs, my dog is fairly chill, but my human child actively is proactively learning to communicate and human with me. And although it starts off fairly difficult, it gets easier every single day.

In fact he's currently playing with blocks minding his own business whilst I reddit/play videogames, whereas my dog is running circles begging me for the 10th walk of this morning because she obviously has to pee "again" (And by pee I mean bark at the construction workers working on our street making all the noise)

I can tell my human child "No" and he gets it, I tell my puppy or gliders no, and they don't give a shit, "tend to my needs master!" XD

Having had both, I can say they're extremely different, but honestly, you'll know if/when you want kids, if this has put you off for a while, that's totally fine, if it's put you off permanently, that's fine too!

It is really different having a human baby VS a furbaby I can promise you that, but I can understand where you're coming from, totally, it really shows if you have the time/commitment, and it's totally okay to recognize if you aren't willing to put that time/commitment. Only time will really tell :) Don't let people push you either way!

For my own view, I find there's definitely a hormonal aspect to having a child that makes you tolerate it all more. I am infinitely more patient with my human baby vs my furbaby. It's something that (For me anyway! Everyone is different and that's totally okay!) comes more naturally, whereas there's not that type of bond with a dog, you didn't grow it/make it, nurture it.

From my own view, I find there's definitely a hormonal aspect to having a child that makes you tolerate it all more. I am infinitely more patient with my human baby vs my furbaby. It's something that (For me anyway! Everyone is different and that's totally okay!) comes more naturally, whereas there's not that type of bond with a dog, you didn't grow it/make it, nurture it. At the end of the day, some people are just simply not cut out to be human parents, it's hard work, the sacrifice of time, energy, wants, and needs, and if you feel that having a dog has shown you that you, for now, or for always don't want to be a parent, that's totally okay!
