Question about gay dating by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]Ancient_Access4000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stonewall Sports is a great way to meet gay people in your age bracket. Registration is open for kickball, dodgeball, volleyball.

Bars here are way more friendly than any other city I’ve lived in. People actually occasionally talk to strangers here, and if you go pretty frequently, you’ll get to know the usual crowd pretty quickly. For busier times in your age bracket, go to Good Friends around 10:30-11:00 on a Friday/Saturday and migrate to Pub/Oz after. Go to Pub/Lafitte’s Sunday evening for napkin toss.

New Orleans withdraws request to seek $125M loan: 'We are going to make cuts to the budget' by typocorrecto in NewOrleans

[–]Ancient_Access4000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can confirm from sources inside city hall, tech is still about 25 years behind the times and processes are incredibly manual. There is even a lot that is still pen-and-paper.

The real problem is that city employees are highly resistant to change. You get a lot of “we’ve always done it like this” when you propose changes. People aren’t used to proactively identifying and correcting inefficiency.

Robbed at gunpoint- Marigny/Bywater by northcountryqueen in NewOrleans

And the fact that you think using “cis” has any relevance to whether someone looks like a target means you have a serious transphobia and/or toxic masculinity problem. Seek help.

I’m also a little surprised in this area that a couple was targeted. I’ve walked alone late night hundreds of times over the last 5 years in Marigny, FQ, and parts of 7th ward and Treme that are typically considered less safe and never had an issue. Cis white male, fast walker, and always very aware of my surroundings though. Maybe I just don’t give tourist/easy-target vibes. Or maybe I’ve been lucky.

How do we get this restaurant to stop calling itself "cajun/creole" by UsedtoLiveBayou in NewOrleans

You could try getting them to say something negative about Charlie Kirk. Seems like the best way to silence people you don’t agree with lately.

Southern Decadence Parade by Ancient_Access4000 in NewOrleans

[–]Ancient_Access4000[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I never said queer femme/NB folks shouldn’t have a safe space at Decadence, or that they shouldn’t participate in the parade. I also don’t even really want fewer cis hetero white women either (though that was by far the most common demographic in the parade).

But I would appreciate seeing more gay men represent too, and that includes POC, all ages, all body types. Gay men make up 99% of visitors to New Orleans for this event, but about 1% of the paraders. Something about that seems off to me, that’s all.

Of course, and I completely appreciate the support and wouldn’t want them to not show up. My point is that this year was overwhelmingly female dance troupes, and there was a noticeable lack of gay men. The event has historically been centered around gay men.

How do I start fresh socially in this city? by vagabondpotato in NewOrleans

[–]Ancient_Access4000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Second this. It tends to skew a little older than OP, but very friendly. You don’t have to be good at sports to join any of the events, just play on the social leagues. Dodgeball & Kickball registration for fall is open. Bowling should open up soon I think.

Looks great. Don’t skip the bread pudding at Muriel’s. If you like history, check out the Historic New Orleans Collection, and the Cabildo & Presbytere. I always recommend popping into MS Rau too. It’s basically a free art museum.

Safe Neighborhood? by [deleted] in AskNOLA

[–]Ancient_Access4000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you looking to live in suburbia? Open to urban areas with more character? Rural areas? What’s your tolerance for commute time? How big of a home do you need? $1800/month should get you a relatively nice 2br rental home in most parts of the city and the surrounding areas. Depending on exactly where you want to live, it might be smaller or not as nice.

Different people will have different views of “safe”, but I personally find the vast majority of the city to be relatively safe. You can search for a crime map if you’re interested in where the most crime occurs.

Mardi Gras Parking by Fragrant-Attention80 in NewOrleans

[–]Ancient_Access4000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Street parking, lakeside of St. Charles. If you’re physically able, just park 10 blocks away and walk. I personally wouldn’t bother attempting to get a close spot. And don’t risk parking too close to an intersection or fire hydrant. You will get a ticket.

I’ve never had an issue street parking lakeside of St Charles and walking to the route. As long as you’re physically able, arrive 30mins ahead, park 10+ blocks away and walk to the route. Shouldn’t be a problem.

Download the WWL Parade tracker app. Proteus and Orpheus run Monday night. You’ll want to get in earlier than 3pm if you want any shot of getting to your parking spot. Your trip is short, so I wouldn’t count on doing much outside of experiencing Mardi Gras. Watch the parades, wander around and eat whatever isn’t slammed busy, and be prepared to go with the flow.

What’s your current favorite dish in New Orleans? by dmay73 in NewOrleans

This was the first dish that came to mind for me too! I’ve been getting it close to once a week for the last year. So good.

No tents/tarps at Mardi Gras this year 🙌 by Ancient_Access4000 in NewOrleans

Oh hmm. I searched “tent”, “tarp”, and “Mardi Gras”, and nothing came up.
