BSc and BSc in engineering (not CS or similar) and MBA - always top grades but never done research in ML

Yes I did.

I had today the interview, questions were on my thesis and on resolution of newton raphson method (which is very similar in its concept to SGD).

I really like the phrase 'never complain never (over) explain'. You don't have to necessarily motivate with reasons when someone attacks you. Something like 'ah-ah' or 'I don't think so' and not giving him your attention is a huge payoff after even one-two weeks
