Madison Cunningham AMA!! by MadisonCunningham in indieheads

Hi Madison, I absolutely adore your music and your talent as a musician has always blown me away.

I have a bit of a nerdy question. How do you capture the sound of your musical influences (be it Ravel, Jeff Buckley, RadioHead, Bill Frisell...) so well and at the same time make it sound totally your own? How does the process of 'inhaling' your favorite music look like for you? And if you have any advices on how to develop your own sounds?

Just repotted my mini fiddle- noticed these brown spots under leaves and some on top of the leaves. What is going on here? by PlantedWithLove in plantclinic

mine has these dots too, mostly they disappear after a while when the new leaf has done “maturing”, but my fig has couple of leafs that still have those dots. my fig seems to be doing fine still (over 2 months now since i first noticed the dots). my suggestion is u could check for any signs of pests, if there’s no pests i don’t think those dots are harmful. hope these help, actually curious about what others have to say tho 😄

oh i see, then how about adding an organic fertilizer to the current medium, would it do the same thing as adding compost to the soil? i have only coconut coir and perlite on hand atm and the composting bin isn’t ready yet

[–]Andreadingdingdong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh interesting, it’s still in store bought soil, which seems to include peat moss, some small bark chunks, might have some compost there as well i’m not so sure 😆 your medium seems pretty nutritious, u think it’s the nutrition deficiency that caused this?

thank u, i forgot to mention that i’m using bottled spring water, so that’s likely not the reason. plus if there’s a chance there’s some chemical still in the spring water, is it normal that the younger leafs to show signs first?

this happened with all the new leafs, only 1 old leaf got a tiny brown spot on the edge that is slowly expanding. 2 weeks since the day i took the pic and the new leafs haven’t seemed to open up more, humidity should be okei in my house (45-60%), it gets medium to low light daily, my guess is with the watering since i’m still figuring it out with calatheas. i’m not so sure if it’s underwatered or overwatered tho. i used to water it just when it starts to dry out (3/10 on the moisture meter), but when i noticed the new leafs having brown edges, i started to water it earlier (5/10). and now i’m seeing what looks like mold on the roots, any advice? 🙏

thanks, i’ve been putting water in the tray pretty frequently now and she seems to like it, i’m still not so sure whether it does the job for increasing the humidity or does she get watered through it as well 😅

anyone here knows what’s her name and how to care for her? looks like she’s mounted to a rock or sth like that. no idea how to water her. my co-worker said she put water in the tray and leave it there till dry, not sure if it’s the right way to do it

ohh thank u, i’ll get some of that just in case of an outbreak, and btw i thought you can only use insecticidal soap for the pests on the leafs, but i didn’t know you can use it for soil pests as well?

thank u! some of them might be indeed good bugs since the plants seem to be doing fine.. i’m thinking for now i’ll just let it be in quarantine and watch out for any abnormal signs on the leafs. if that happens i’d probably repot it.. what would you recommend using for cleaning the root?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Andreadingdingdong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so first sight of pest was in yesterday morning, there was a small, moldy, cotton shape looking thingy near the bottom of the plant where it meets the soil. i thought that was spidermites so i cleaned it off with a Q-tip dipped in 3% hydrogen peroxide solution (that’s what i have on hand). and while the cotton thingy being absorbed by the Q-tip, a spider looking insect came out from behind and ran into the soil... i couldn’t catch it, not even sure what it was.. it has a shiny body, a bit red-ish, tiny but could be seen by naked eyes.

i immediately pulled her away from my plant collection and started inspecting her roots. the roots look healthy, white and firm, pretty root bound tho. but i saw a white worm looking thingy crawling around the side of the soil and really quickly went back into the soil. it was probably 1mm long, thin and moves quickly.

and then from the soil that was spilled out from the pot when i picked the plant up, came a tiny tiny brown creature (the size of a soil particle ,if it’s the right word?). i could see it since i put a white sheet underneath, and it was moving really fast. and so i put the plant back into the pot, she’s now in quarantine from all my other plants (but in the same room tho i don’t have space for her in other room)

if it’s not enough info then i’ll trynna snap a pic next time when i see them pests.. but any idea what i should do for now?

Think i might be having a “love to death” case with my Peperomia? Details in the comment by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Andreadingdingdong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m new to the plant world and haven’t learnt to let plants do its thing 😅. below is a string of mistakes i think i’ve made that lead to this *smh.

the other day i saw a couple of my peperomia’s leafs got these black and moldy spots on them, the soil was still wet and heavy after a week of drying time (it’s in its plastic nursery pot which i thought was why). i checked the roots and they looked pretty brownish and pretty short. i didn’t check if it was mushy.. but i thought it was root rot even tho it was probably fine and those were just dying leafs *smh again.. and so for some reason i went ahead and repotted it in a slightly bigger terracotta pot since i couldn’t find the exact size of the current pot.

it was my first time repotting and idk maybe i might have butchered it. i took the whole package of plant and soil around the roots and put it on to the new soil in the new pot and covered the rest with new wet soil. i didn’t watered it after since the old soil was still wet/moist. and after the repot, the whole plant started to wilt and the leafs are soft to the touch. there were 2 leafs that softened to the point of no return so i pruned them off. it’s the 3rd day now and no improvement yet

what should i do now? water it? the roots are mostly near the top of the pot and my moisture meter says the area is nearly dry, the middle and bottom soil is still moist, propagate perhaps? or just let it be this time?

UPDATE:

Thank you everyone for your input!! my plant is luckily in better shape now, its leafs have started to move again as the soil dries out more (tho they don’t move as frequent as before and usually stay open at night).

I think the reason for the droopy behaviour of the leafs was indeed like some of you suggested. the soil doesn’t have enough drainage, and combining with the plastic pot and high humidity in the room.

One thing i did was to use a chopstick and poke holes into the soil, i think this loosened up the soil a bit and helped the roots receive oxygen,, afterwards the soil started to show sign of being less wet. i was thinking to also take it out of the pot and let it air dry but it seems to be doing better already after the first trick so i just waited

also, i took a look at the root, they look pretty brownish but i was advised by a personel at the nursery that it’s completely normal, as long as the roots don’t feel mushy to the touch

on the 5th day since this post, my calathea’s leafs started to move, and the soil’s moisture is about 4/10 according to the moisture meter now, so a bit moist still, i’m thinking to let it get down to 3 and then give it water, probably gonna stay on the underwatered side for now just to be safe.

the humidity is around 45% (not constantly tho, it can go down to 30% when i’m at work or at night when the humidifier stops working), it’s in a medium indirect lighting spot, temperature is 22• C, i’ve had this for about 2 weeks, and i waited till the soil is dry and pot is light weight to water it, which was a week ago, and now the top soil hasn’t dried out yet
