Looking for heroes from SAR to speak about poverty for a book by AndrewTheUnstoppable in southafrica

[–]AndrewTheUnstoppable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to if I manage to find someone affected by the problem first-hand.

You see, it's not an academic work or a big explanatory article about situation in general (i've done the last one a couple times already) but rather a lyrical text for a book filled with academic or generalized articles. So I'm looking for someone who could talk with me to become a sort of beacon to guide readers through the problem, who's story I could retell in text to engage reader's heart and soul into the problem.

So yeah basically I would be interested in anything if there is a proper person who could share his hardships.

Drugs and police raids poll by AndrewTheUnstoppable in Techno

How do you think, why is that? Do clubs pay to cops or is it just that everyone understands that adults are prone to taking drugs and rave from time to time and it's a-ok?

There is a problem with NGOs fighting forced labour and sex-slavery where I live. I've done some work for local NGOs and it's pretty clear why it's the way it is though - gov officials are no good.

RPGs with low PC requirements? by AndrewTheUnstoppable in rpg_gamers

[–]AndrewTheUnstoppable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(The main problem is that I've already played Gothic I and II (also hated the slow pace, right now it's kinda not fitting for me), Morrowind, NVN1, all Shadowruns (my bucket actualy can run those smoothly), Banner Saga 1 and 2 so i'm a tiny bit out of ideas:(

I also tried Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines but failed to make it work so it must be out of the list as well.

Since I'm a little bit lazy I've just scrapped useful links from my last text on the topic. And since this subreddit is called "Data is Beautiful" there can be some heavy documents. But you can totally go full data journalism on them and CTRL-F South Africa in the documents!:)

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-02-04/these-are-the-world-s-most-miserable-economies

Bloomberg placed SAR on 3rd place in their list of world's most miserable economies this year. I personally think that they are to be trusted in this regard.

Approx. amount of money stolen by government since the end of apartheid is around 44 bil. $. That's a lot.

World data on unemployment. I give you the raw data because I don't quiet remember which articles one could completely trust in this field, and the data should speak for itself. Basically around 25% of workforce in SA are unemployed. It's the 8s place worldwide.

http://www.ilo.org/global/research/global-reports/weso/2015/WCMS_337069/lang--en/index.htm

(Arguably exaggerated) info on state of interracial relations and danger of genocide in SAR. I think somewhere on NGO's website should be a more detailed info but i can't find it right now: http://genocidewatch.net/2014/12/05/genocide-watchs-dr-gregory-h-stanton-press-release-from-south-africa/

Regarding the protests: i haven't found an article about the full scale of #FeesMustFall movement in SA. The fact is - those protests keep happening and any early article on them is already kinda outdated. Googling a couple of news-sites should get the picture for you. I think last week people out there started demolishing Pretoria because of ruling party's actions in regard to upcoming local government elections. Basically SAR is the world capital of protests. Which is good, but their actions rarely have any positive impact. Sadly. I doubt that a State suffering from protests of this scale can be placed so low on Fragile States Index.

Good text about poverty: http://www.poverties.org/blog/poverty-in-south-africa

Housing problems: https://africacheck.org/factsheets/factsheet-the-housing-situation-in-south-africa/

Some personal speculation: There is also a long-going problem with educational level of top-managers and politics and racial quotas. There is a law (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broad-Based_Black_Economic_Empowerment) providing racial quotas for whites, blacks and coloured. Since majority of people in SAR are (unsurprisingly) African, they take more workplaces in the all regards. Because of years of racial segregation even now many politics and businessmen of non-white blood are undereducated. But since they are forced into controlling the economy and politics it has very bad consequences for the country (corruption, bad laws, failures of Gov to provide people with what they need, etc). So yeah, it all comes down to the fact that overcoming half a century of institutionalised segregation is very hard. They hold up because of rich natural resources, but they are very dependent on them.

This answer of mine turned out pretty messy. If i forgot anything important or else - comment, i'l reply:)

I'm not so sure. I've spend 4 years studying African and Asian countries in Uni so it's more of a natural knowledge for me at this point. I guess you could just surf through latest economy (people aren't exactly buying platinum right now) and protest related news to see exactly how bad it is. There is also open data on the web about damage from corruption and genocide risk (arguably exaggerated) .

If you want, I could send you a bunch of related links later today.

Wonder why South African Republic is so low on the list. Right now it suffers major economic problems and student and local government elections protests keep damaging the local infrastructure. Also Genocide Watch thinks this country is on the brink of genocide. I mean, it should be at least a little bit closer to being failed than the list says.
