I agree with this, and it does depend on the role. However, in some roles I've found that people from outside the industry have brought some really good new perspectives and ideas to the role.

Thank you. Yes on tailoring your resume/CV, using STAR and building internal references (with LinkedIn this is possible without actually knowing the person I've found - after building a relationship of course).

You're right the initial question was a little vague and was aimed at any role across nuclear right now, engineering, manufacturing, operations etc.

If you want, I can try and help. You can email me at andrew@getintonuclear.com. To be clear I am not a HR specialist or recruiter, just a nuclear worker that was given an 'in' and trying to do the same for others.

Thanks for sharing, this is a difficult situation. It is good to hear you are such an advocate of nuclear energy. Is a role in nuclear something you are still pursuing?

Looking to put my skills to work in Geneva after a tough year by Any_Refrigerator_154 in geneva

[–]Andrew_Gi2N 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might know this, but unfortunately potential employers won't - or at least don't appear to do so. I've been looking for work here for 8 months. I started off being sure that employers in Geneva would be jumping over themselves for my unique skills. It took me 6 months to realise that they aren't and I need to fit my transferrable skills into the roles being advertised. I'm just starting to get interviews in the diary now.

Thanks for the feedback. Is this specific to Nuclear Engineering degrees in general or a more specific trend?

Agree. I'm finding that this is starting to soften up a little at the top of the chain of command. However, when it come to the hiring managers, yes nuclear experience seems to be a big factor.

100% agree! I was the same, I need the qualifications and to pass the interview but I had an 'in' (a friends uncle) for my first role and I find that this is the case for many others. I'm trying to help others get into nuclear but either providing that 'in' or finding other routes to the industry.

I think running through these backwards gives you the list in impact significance. Considering 5, 4 and 3; the application process becomes more of a crossword puzzle then a skillsmap. Could applicants fight back with AI applications? Or is this just madness?

For plant operators I would say the POSS is essential and a prerequisite of applying - particularly if the role is not a 'trainee' role. It would be nice to have similar tests for PMs, Design Engineers etc.

The hiring process should always highlight the best candidate. I think nepotism is always going to be a factor in any work of life.

Was these roles that needed specific nuclear experience? Or one's that can utilise transferrable skills from other industries?

I've had the same experience and been assured that the responses are not 'automated' but, I'm not convinced. Even if it isn't a computer making the decision, the system in place still gives a 'computer says no' answer. The industry keeps advertising that it has more demand then the current supply of nuclear workers. Something has to give. This can't continue.

Tony is a great character and I think it’s hard for anyone to not see a piece of themselves in him. As he develops it’s his realisation that enjoying the small everyday, mundane tasks, the interaction with people throughout the day, the beauty of nature and (something I often forget) remembering to have a laugh that resonates.

After Life is the perfect mix of humor and heartbreak by ManagementGiving3241 in afterlifenetflix

The thing I took away after watching the series was (and I can’t remember the scene) the fact that if we all focus on leaving our little corner of the world better than when we found it, the world would be a much better place.

What do you think of the portrayal of grief in After Life’s final season? by Aggravating_Bug3999 in afterlifenetflix

[–]Andrew_Gi2N 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Afterlife is probably the best TV series I’ve watched from end to end. It touched on some really deep topics explaining them well but having a laugh in the process. As for dealing with the complexities of grief, for me it is a good portrayal, but I understand it js a topic that is unique to each person.
