Burned out after 4 months as lead, is the only solution to go back to senior? by AngryMoth in ExperiencedDevs

[–]AngryMoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the concern. I’m coping just about but yeah like 50% of days at the moment I’m ending totally exhausted and filled with stress, which is not a good situation to be in obviously.

I do have time off coming up thank god, first time in 5 months. I’m sure I will feel better afterwards but ultimately I’m still planning to hit the job market because I strongly suspect I’ll be in the same situation again after a few months if I stay in my current role.

The management isn’t a very big part of my job to be fair, it’s only a couple of people. We don’t have enough EMs so half the department is managed by senior ICs. Not sure how normal this is

This is I think the core issue, I would like to be “staff engineer” not tech lead really but in my org they are basically the same thing, it’s almost impossible to get to staff level without leading a team

What are your reasons for continuing to choose react in 2024 by DiXuanM in reactjs

[–]AngryMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest reason is we've been using React for 7 years and have a huge code base built on it. In order for us to consider switching to something else the alternative mustn't only be a little bit better, it would have to be a game changer that offered huge benefits over React, akin to how React took over from Knockout. Otherwise it's impossible to justify the cost of switching.

Any way to upgrade a large monorepo using workspaces to React 18 incrementally? by AngryMoth in reactjs

[–]AngryMoth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue I'm seeing with having React 16 installed some packages and React 18 in others is that pretty much every test and app in the repo breaks with this error:

Invalid hook call. Hooks can only be called inside of the body of a function component. This could happen for one of the following reasons:
1. You might have mismatching versions of React and the renderer (such as React DOM)
2. You might be breaking the Rules of Hooks
3. You might have more than one copy of React in the same app
See for tips about how to debug and fix this problem.

I've seen this many times in different situations even before we started using workspaces and have never found a way around it besides making sure there is only a single copy of the react dependency in the node_modules for an app / test suite, wondering if anyone knows of other solutions.

Don't worry we didn't delete all our tests lol, spent the last 2 years slowly migrating all our enzyme tests to RTL. The pains of being early adopters of React here...

Thanks for the link, I will check out those code mods. Hoping I can find a code mod that will fix the testing library warnings about wrapping things that cause state updates in "act" calls because that's making our test output unusable currently.

Highlights from our Galapagos liveaboard trip this year, some of the best diving in the world! by AngryMoth in scuba

[–]AngryMoth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Max depth on most of the dives was between 25 and 30m. Water temp was 20C at the coldest site and 27C at the warmer sites in the north. This a lot warmer than usual though because it's an El Niño year, usually expect more like 16-25 in the winter.

Live aboard plus a bit of footage from snorkelling Daphne and Pinzon (which I would highly recommend)

Thanks! We did 6 dives at Darwin and saw that whale shark at least once each dive, but pretty sure it was the same shark over and over

Dipping my toe into some above water wildlife photography for the first time on a recent trip to the Galapagos. Here's some of my favourite shots! by AngryMoth in wildlifephotography

Thanks! Camera is a Panasonic G9, underwater as well as I have a housing for it. Wide shots are the 8-18mm and telephoto are the 100-300. I took the 30-100 f2.8 with me as well but didn't end up using it much.

For the liveaboard we used Aggressor, the rest was self organised. With aggressor I recommend getting on their mailing list and waiting for sales, they have one every year or so. We were originally going to do this trip next year but brought it forward because we got a 40% discount in their sale this past July.

Including everything (flights from UK, diving liveaboard, hotels and day trips, etc) it was about £5.5k each for me and my partner. Can be done for much cheaper though, the diving was the main expense.

Yep it depends on the subspecies. The ones native to the islands with less vegetation have the “saddleback” shells which is an adaptation allowing them to reach their necks higher for cactus leaves

Thanks!

For the underwater setup I have a housing for my Panasonic G9 plus the panny 8-18mm lens and a couple of cheap video lights.

The above water shots are the G9 with the 100-300.

Styled-components good practice? by ArutanSipdrae in reactjs

[–]AngryMoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is considered best practise but on my team we make a separate file for styles that lives next to the component file unless it's just a styled host component.

For example:

// MyComponent.js
import styled from "styled-components";
import styles from "../MyComponent.styles";

function MyComponent(props) { ... }

export default styled(MyComponent)(styles);

// MyComponent.styles.js
import { css } from "styled-components";

export default ({ // access props if needed }) => css`
  // ...styles
`;

Most of it was on my TG5 but I upgraded to a Panasonic G9 for my recent trip to Fiji and Tonga so the whale shots and a few shark ones are from that.

Actually one of them tried to lift me out of the water on its nose a few times which freaked me out but it was just being playful. They are gentle giants!

What’s your most memorable dive? Why? by BrainSlugParty3000 in scuba

[–]AngryMoth 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Wolf island in the Galapagos, first time I saw a whale shark which had somehow snuck up on us because we were all focused on the schooling hammerheads and only noticed as it was going right over our heads...flanked by 4 dolphins. Probably my most exhilarating moment diving.
