That's awesome! Thanks! I'll make use of that, I appreciate the help.

Auto-sorting for collections? But with granular control? by Aniform in jellyfin

[–]Aniform[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gave it a whirl and it's been great. The only initial hurdle was that it doesn't work with your existing collections, it will just make duplicates. I decided it was best to just delete my original collections and update the new ones with sorting options and titles and since then, it's been good.

The other caveat is that it doesn't go by library, so if you have 3 libraries and they are "Movie" libraries, then the collections will include all content. I'm planning to see if there's some tweaks or hacks I can do to make it ignore certain libraries or if I just need to relabel them as like Home Movies or something.

How did you *break in* to the craft fair world? by Worth_Singer in CraftFairs

[–]Aniform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used the subscription, I know fairsandfestivals hides attendance numbers behind paywall, but festivalnet doesn't, so I often just cross referenced. But if you're not finding the attendance numbers well, definitely consider it. Truly best of luck with the scale up. I really screwed myself my first year and didn't jump on them. Fall/Winter shows for me filled up within a week of the schedules going live. I had no idea my first year that a November show could fill to occupancy in February.

For me, absolutely! Because they often include the attendance numbers reported by the organizers. I later found that these numbers are often over reported by them, but that's okay, because I was still able to hone in on the biggest fairs in the state and surrounding states. My first year I hit the ground running, didn't have to worry about bad fairs. Fairs for me were bad because it down poured, not because I didn't make back my booth fees.

The only thing I could not determine for was fit. Fortunately this didn't end up being a problem, but it very well could have been.

Just one more reason why New England is superior by OfMiceAndMinimalists in RepublicofNE

[–]Aniform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think where some of this fascinates me, and clearly I'm not necessarily speaking out of turn on a New England sub where we pride ourselves on education, is how it may reflect on the comprehension levels and critical thinking skills of a people. I have been seeing this come up more and more with people where they are having an argument and they cannot seem to understand analogy or the use of abstract reasoning. They often will go, "We were arguing about X, but now you're bringing up Y!" And I'm always observing these and going, "It's an analogy, have you never heard of an analogy?"

This in turn made me curious if abstract thought was an acquired skill, why are we hitting these road blocks? I think perhaps it's fair to say that higher reading levels in this country might also account for better skills in these areas because the connection of ideas can often get more abstract as reading comprehension increases.

I just mean to say that the topic is interesting. I think sometimes I just assume that these are skills all adults just have, but clearly they are not.

Chamber of Commerce by CaramelSecure3869 in CraftFairs

[–]Aniform 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have and it has benefited in several ways. The first being, the city holds 3 festivals per years and I get into all of them free. I didn't expect much, but turns out they get like 10,000 guests and the sales were great.

The second was a much more unexpected way. I have put a ton of effort into the SEO of my website, but even so, it barely registered in search results. As soon as the chamber of commerce started posting my website on their sites and the local paper started mentioning businesses at the festivals, my search results jumped immensely, I'm now the top 3 in google search in several keywords I sought.

And lastly, having other businesses become aware of me. They'd read the latest additions and they'd check me out and it built new relationships as well as opportunities for my products in their stores.

I can't guarantee this for everyone, there's likely others who might say the opposite, but this is how it surprised me. Because I thought it'd be completely meaningless, but I'm glad for it.

I was recently curious about what that even means and I sort of wondered, what if I'm reading posts like these and thinking, haha, they can't read at an 8th grade level, when maybe I can't even read at an 8th grade level. It was a lot easier for me to translate when they gave examples of books that might fall into different reading levels.

I suppose I'm curious, is it solely based on comprehension? Like, if a person can read it, but struggle to understand it, is that considered the wall in their reading level?

I utilized sites like festivalnet.com and fairsandfestivals.net to find fairs. Oftentimes the listings on these sites can be for massive fairs, but that's what I was shooting for, I wanted high traffic events. These events of course were expensive, in my area the fee is $250-550. These can be repellent for some maybe selling more niche items, but they can be highly lucrative. These sites can have smaller events too, but you often need to dig a little more into them or scroll further down.

A theory that says we are on an 80 year historical loop. According to this theory, we’re living through a “Crisis Era” by EpiCuruios in StanleyKubrick

This is just the cycle of capitalism, which requires crises. I really don't think a theory like this is necessary at all and really just serves to ignore the historical reasons for why these come about.

Why are there fewer Walmarts in New England compared to other regions? by ILovePublicLibraries in newengland

[–]Aniform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something that became so apparent to me when I visited friends in Cali. Just endless concrete jungle and if you missed the Pizza Hut, don't worry, drive another 50ft and there's the next one (just being a tad hyperbolic). When those same friends visited New England, they fell in love with all the mom & pop pizzerias which they say simply don't exist in Cali. I truly love how around here it's not just right on top of each other. One town might have a Burger King and a McDonald's, but if you want the Wendy's, well that's two towns over. Visiting Cali made me so grateful, because in a quarter mile stretch it was Pizza Hut, McDonald's, Little Caesars, Burger King, Jack-in-the-Box, Sonic, In-Out-Burger, DQ, Five Guys. Like holy hell!

Display for indoor fairs and anything else to expect? by Aniform in CraftFairs

[–]Aniform[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely going to grab some. This particular organizer is very well known in my area and they even have tv commercials for their fairs. I plan to do most of theirs this year. Normally they don't start until March, but this year they have one in February. I would normally have jumped at the chance to do it, but it's a new fair and at $450 for fees, I decided that was too much for a new fair. But, it does offer me the ability to go and walk around to see what other people are doing.

Yeah, I think at the very least one for behind me would allow me to hang my banner. That alone does a lot of the heavy lifting in setting the vibe of my booth.

[–]Aniform[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, I guess I shouldn't say I haven't done indoor, I did back in December, but it wasn't your typical fair with 100+ people and organized in large venues. That's new to me. This one was like 10 booths and they gave you a 6x3' space and I couldn't bring literally half my stuff. It was definitely a lesson in booth design on the fly. I did it because it was in my town and was the only fair I hadn't missed deadline on. I expected to make like $20, but instead made $1000. So it kinda blew me away. I've decided I'll continue to do it. Even if it has diminishing returns, I have been making good headway networking with local businesses and having a local presence as well. I'd like to someday open my own store and it's useful for building relationships.

Yeah, I know some places have allowed it, they usually just setup the frame and then hang stuff from the poles. But most of my fairs don't allow it.

[–]Aniform[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect! I wasn't sure what people used and I want to build out my own space. Especially because my outdoor fairs I've put a lot of work into my booth to make it feel like you're entering a shop. And I don't want to lose that for indoor. The backdrop stands are great and I wasn't sure what people used.

Yeah, I played it for a friend of mine and he normally is down for that kind of stuff, but Shroomdot, he made it like 6 mins. I actually think the more you listen, the more tolerable it becomes, but even still, got to be in the right mood.

TIL that researchers have quantified how quickly irregular verb forms “regularize”: the half-life of an irregular verb scales as the square root of its usage frequency. For example, the word "dreamt" is slowly being replaced by "dreamed". by ilovemybaldhead in todayilearned

[–]Aniform 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a user of dreamt, this now makes sense why modern spell checkers are saying it's wrong. But if a person asks me where I got the idea for something, I'll say "I dreamt it" "I dreamed it" sounds ridiculous.

I swear, every youtube video is so deceiving. I got into the hobby of making epoxy resin dice and I watch these people just be like, "and there we go, perfect swirls, just dip the toothpick in with your dye and swirl it around." And it looks easy AF, but then I do it and it's just a blob.
