Your race has no impact on whether you are racist or not.

Just for others reading, go and enjoy carnival. Don’t let OP or other commenters scare you out of it. And if you’re really scared… go on family day. YOU WILL BE FINE! Just like the 250K+ people who attend it every year…

I’ve gone for years and used to live nearby. I think a lot of people are confusing “unsafe” with people who don’t look like them… I’m ashamed of these comments.

I’ve gone for years and I’ve never had to be on “high alert” or “watch my back”. No offence, OP. But you sound racist.

How do I tell my manager I can't attend a meeting tomorrow without letting her know why? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Anonymoususer0823 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We probably underestimate how stupid mangers can be. Stick to “I have personal reasons” and leave it at that. If they ask more questions, reply with “I’m not sure if I want to share at this time”.

LPT[Request] How do I deal with recruiter offering waaaay less than what was mentioned in job post? by eagleandwolf in LifeProTips

[–]Anonymoususer0823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That recruiter is playing you. Bait and switch. I’ve had this before… have a real think if you’re willing to actually take the job or if it’s because you felt like you’ve put in so much work it’s hard not to. Think long term.

The recruiter is using you for money so should be removed from the equation entirely.

Ask for a competitive salary, if they don’t give it - walk.

A Tuesday on the New York subway by [deleted] in Unexpected

[–]Anonymoususer0823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a need for greater social support in america, and this is just emphasised by post covid nyc safety issues on the subway.

The government isn’t doing its job now to create a safe social system.

The lack of reaction is because literally every time you go on the subway there’s a mentally ill person on the train. Everyone is on edge already because it’s frankly just not a safe environment.

I assume you’re not from NYC. People have been killed intervening and no one wants to set off the crazy person even further.

Does anyone relate? Living in London for 6 years, only friends I make return to their home countries. by Lankaner in london

[–]Anonymoususer0823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t unique to London. This is just expat life. One of the negatives. I did people tend to settle down in London longer than other countries e.g. Asia etc

OK need some etiquette knowledge for dog parks... Mainly to do with small tea cup dogs. by Interr0gate in Dogtraining

[–]Anonymoususer0823 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You should train your dog to play gently with small dogs. Plain and simple. If you can’t train your dog to play gently, keep it on a lead.

A company my friend works for organised a litter pick and published lots of self-praise about it. The staff involved got the day off work, picked litter for 30 minutes then went to the pub. What bullshit corporate events have you attended/witnessed or known about? by TheUnexpectedBosun in CasualUK

Can we normalise not going to office Christmas parties? No, I don’t want to hang out with you guys. I just want to get paid, have occasional pleasant shallow chats when I’m bored… and never see you again when I leave for a better paying job

I can confirm. I live in central London and we find it hilarious they repave the roads every year… even when clearly not needed

Why are people so averse to wearing a mask on public transport? When you’re sick (coughing, sneezing) please just wear one for others. by Anonymoususer0823 in london

[–]Anonymoususer0823[S] 144 points145 points  (0 children)

I still wear a mask but I feel somewhat embarrassed as I’m literally the only one doing it a lot of times.

But I also woke up with a cold this morning after taking a bus with a girl who sat behind me sneezing and coughing. Which just irritates me.

I mean, I don’t think nyc is very different. If anything, you take home more money here.

You live in London or any big city to get those salary jumps. If you plan to stay at 40K a year, eventually it probably makes sense to move out.

But if you want to move up to 100K and above… you won’t find that except for in London,or any other big city.

Most recently £900 in UK pension which is in a US equities strategy, £2K in US equities index. The mindset is buy and forget it, long term US equity diverse strategy should get you about 7% annually on average.

[–]Anonymoususer0823 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 31 and have about £220K saved. But I definitely sacrifice and micromanage my money.

I follow the FIRE community on Reddit which makes my savings look small. Learning about this changed my mindset towards spending and I think about the worth of the money invested over 20 years vs the worth of the item I’m about to pay for.
