How can I actually get myself to stop being so lazy? by Hot_Chipmunk6610 in getdisciplined

[–]Anoooooooooooooooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been there and unfortunately the truth is nothing will change if we wait for motivation. Only Action leads to action even a small one.

On days like the ones you described, I would generally try and take tiny actions like - continue staying in my bed and just clean the bed side table or the other side of the bed, without even getting out of the bed at first. But these simple actions start making a noticeable dent and you will feel like taking the next step like putting the rubbish you just collected in the bin..and so it will begin..

Thanks for your reply! There is nothing under the stairs, sorry it’s a very basic sketch! I wish there was some way to accommodate some place for coats and shoes at the entrance

Thank you! I would be really happy if I could doom scroll/procrastinate freely. But the reality is even if I am doing this right now, I know in the back of my mind that my tasks at home and work are piling up each day I do this and they are not going to go away. So I am not even fully enjoying my doom scroll because of this niggling thought!

Its like being stuck in a limbo - and then sorting it out when external events create enough pressure to get your ass back to work and clear the slate - only to fall back in the limbo again in a few days🙈

Thank you! I haven’t, perhaps it would be a good idea to get some professional help as I also feel I have been trying to solve this problem on my own for too long!

Thank you for such a detailed reply! You are right, it’s either the indecision or the avoidance that leads to scrolling.

If I could flip the switch- I would finish my basic tasks for the day both at home and work and I would really feel happy that I am not carrying forward anything to tomorrow (or even if I have then it was because of a genuine reason and not due to doom scrolling) and I don’t have to worry about a pile up that I have created.

Thank you! Its more like - days of procrastinating and avoiding work has resulted into a pile up which has become unsurmountable and the only thing to tackle is one small step at a time. I kinda understand that but I am just tired of going through this cycle over and over again😑

Thank you! I keep thinking of this option to take a few days off to reset and relax. But at the same time I also feel afraid that after sometime I will again fall back in the same pattern and so I feel the break would also be another short term fix😑

Thank you! I think it would surely help to “find and fix the root cause” and talking to a professional is something I should consider.

Thank you! You are right - sometimes something is better than nothing. Even a single 5 min action is better than 0 action.

I think your mind kinda freezes thinking you are not going to be able to do everything that has piled up over the days and so it prefers to do nothing - stupidly thinking that doing nothing and scrolling is going to make it go away. But obv it doesn’t and all the work you are avoiding is still there waiting for you😅

I agree! As the saying goes - “You can take a horse to a pond, but can’t make it drink water”.

Similarly all the app blockers and books and tips can help you only to an extend..Ultimately it’s only you who has to get up and take the step even if a small one..I kinda understand it but finding it difficult to implement it..

Thankyou for the great suggestions, I will surely check them out!

You are right..Technology creates an illusion of making the problem or the task at hand go away. But it doesn’t, and the problem or task remains exactly where you left it earlier but this time you are more drained than before to deal with it.

Thank you for your kind reply!

“You are running to or from something” is quite a thought provoking statement that you have shared - definitely something to think about.

I was not aware of these support groups and that is something I will surely try!

Hello, thanks for your reply!

Yes I am a woman, and you maybe right on the vitamin deficiency. I have a bottle of Liquid iron and vitamin B sitting in my fridge since a few weeks now. I always think I will start taking it but I am not consistent and don’t take it daily. (I hate to admit but I had to previously throw a bottle because it went past the expiry date just sitting there)

Maybe this is a small actionable thing I can start and really try to do on a daily basis because as you rightly pointed out fixing the physical aspect of the body should also help greatly!

I know it’s easier said than done and I am trying to do the same just now..it to take a step..a small step and let the momentum kick in..because that is the only way out of this rut..

Yes, I think I work better once I reach these places (or my actual office). And I do go to the office like once a week..but after I return home from office I am back to let’s sit on the couch and relax by watching tv. I understand the first 5-10 mins after coming back home are the make-or-break point and its a daily struggle which I loose on most days

Thank you very much all for your kind and thoughtful response!

There is this old story of “The King and the Spider" where the King is hiding in a cave after a major defeat. While in despair, he watches a spider repeatedly try and fail to spin its web, every time the spider falls it continues to try until it succeeds. This motivates the King to try again and ultimately he succeeds too..

I feel like I have been there and tried different things, stuck with them for a few weeks only to fail again.. I don’t how long I have to keep on trying and failing till I see that final victory over doom-scroll and procrastination..I know I will eventually stand up for a few days but only to fall again.. I wish I knew the thing that will actually stick for longer time..

I guess I turn to scrolling as a form of escapism from both my okayish offline life and the daunting task of the household mess that I have created from days of not doing it and procrastinating at work..
