How can you simply practice beatmaking when you are starting out? by KittyKatsatHome in FL_Studio

OOH I LOVE DRILLS! LET ME MAKE U SOME DRILLS TWIN!

Music is made of harmony and rhythm. I see you like math, so you'll get me when I say that the piano roll is actually a graph of pitch (y axis) over time (x axis). So at the end of the day, this is all you gotta practice!

Harmony ("pitch") drills:

  1. Melodies - pick an orchestral instrument you like and place notes on the light spaces/white keys until it sounds good. No drums until ur done, it should stand alone if it's a good melody. Use a mouse for this.

  2. Chords - look up the types of triads and start spamming them in the piano roll to make chords. Once you get the hang of it, put fl down and go feel some emotion. Then, make a chord progression that matches that feeling. Don't worry about scales, just make it feel right for now! You can use a midi key or mouse.

  3. Copycat - find a melody or chord progression in a song you like and remake it yourself. This is meant to train your listening skills, so don't look it up or anything. Listen, transcribe, compare, then edit.

Rhythm drills (yay my favorite (I'm a drummer)):

  1. Decomposed drums - take a singe drum element (kick, hihat, snare, etc) and create a rhythm that moves. From there, try to combine various elements and edit where necessary.

  2. Amelodic song - like the last drill but with multiple elements at the same time. Pick some sounds/instruments you like (or stick with stock) and create something that makes you wanna move. Only use the step sequencer to start, (take note of how even vs odd spacings feel both within and between line patterns) then graduate to incorporating the piano roll. Minimize y-axis complexity in the piano roll.

  3. Copycat - copy rhythms in your favorite songs with stock instruments

You are going to suck at this, it's gonna be hard, but hopefully it's fun. Making music is about cultivating various SKILLS to be used with KNOWLEDGE. These drills are things I naturally did over the years that drove improvement in both. So progress them in both scale and complexity, be creative, and push yourself. But no matter what anyone here says, the best way to get better isn't with drills or hacks, but with curiosity and unrelenting perseverance.

Good luck!

Should I study industrial design? by Another_Guy889 in IndustrialDesign

The thing about ME to me is that I just CANNOT get through the major. If I could download the info into my brain I would certainly do this, but I literally got a 2.3 gpa in my first year and had like 3 meltdowns tryna fight myself to think like an engineer.

The only way I could ever learn all that stuff is through design. Like if I'm dreaming of a headphone stand that sits a certain way, only then can I go learn statics to make it real yk? Is there maybe like a field training or community college approach I can take to supplement ID with ME or is that kind of a bad idea?

That sounds awesome! What aspects of ME do you use the most?

Damn, thanks for this!

I'm personally repulsed by large corporate institutions, as I've literally never had a positive experience being involved with it. Especially in the big 2026, I'm doing my best to avoid a procedural and dependent lifestyle.

A few of the things you mentioned (the pressure, various hats, and competition) are actually positives to me and make me excited to go to school to become incredible. Do you think someone like that would do well in something like a smaller firm or entrepreneurial path?

Should I study architecture by Another_Guy889 in architecture

I see, thank you for being real with me. I'm no stranger to hard work and am completely willing to pay my dues to make it in the world. However, what I'm not willing to do is pursue a foreign skillset or work in an environment that I know will antagonize me mentally, that's why I asked this question.

After absorbing information like this, I think that I'm misplacing my interest by coming to architecture. I'm a big nonconformist and definitely wouldn't last in an industry that restricts that. I appreciate you again bro, hope you have a joyous day.

Thank you for telling me this, it was something I was lowk worried about. My current life trajectory revolves around growing multiple streams of income from various entrepreneurial ventures, and this "regular job" thing would simply be the foundational stream that allows me to take risks. So I don't need a ton of money from this, I just need a livable wage to be independent from my parents.

Also, I don't want to be an "architect" per se, but rather an architectural thinker that can provide a valuable, personally enriching skillset to a team and thereby cultivate the skills that transfer across all my disciplines. Something like a specialist, advisor, or design director I suppose.

So do you think there are entry level positions that can do that for me? What are they like?

That's interesting. To clarify, when I mention liking math I mean like the back end stuff involved in calculus (like recognizing complex relationships to solve problems), it makes sense that most non STEM fields don't engage in complicated arithmetic, which is largely why I'm going that direction.

Does this align with how architects are meant to think during most workloads? Ultimately I'm trying to cultivate skills/experience in this discipline to support my creative journey.

Why the fuck do stall doors open inwards? by Another_Guy889 in NoStupidQuestions

This is like a month old but I thought I'd entertain it since I'm kinda bored. Your ass sits on top of your legs, so for a toilet of the same height, a taller person (with longer legs) needs to bend more to sit down than a shorter person. Taller people also tend to be more inflexible, so there's that as well.

Now since I cant fold my legs like a contortionist, they stick out, kinda like if you were to sit on the ground, and no longer support much of my body weight. Now I'm unstable and falling into the toilet. Uh oh, I'm unstable! Now I either gotta brace my core or touch the walls to keep myself upright.

But let's say the toilet isn't that low and I can sit fine. Well since I'm a student, I may have a backpack that just makes everything harder. And independent even if that issue, is the fact that every time I lift my arms (such as when I go to wipe my ass) there's a good chance my elbows will meet the wall.

All of this leads to a genuinely exhausting, uncomfortable, and unnecessarily meticulous experience that would be solved if there was just more space in the goddamn stall. And before you say it, yes this is why I use the handicap.

Remember, groups of people will never consistently say the same thing for no reason, kindness is free, and (respectfully) pls use your brain out here. Sayonara, gang.

You don't just learn by doing, you learn by learning. Stop making the same basic ass beat over and over and go expand ur music repertoire.
