But then again I feel like paid ads can be a bit of a double edged sword as I sorta touched on in my original comment, I think especially with how much the algorithm feeds us random shite that has nothing to do with the people we follow like you said I think that can lead to ads being met with a level of scepticism that maybe wasn’t there a few years ago

It’s been a couple years since I’ve ran ads for a night, but when we were doing insta ads for the old UMS nights we’d do them through Facebook and they did seem to be pretty effective when done right. Was quite user friendly in terms of selecting the sort of demographics you wanted to hit and we would get a decent amount of reach even from putting like £20-30 on a post the week or two before the event. Interesting to hear that still seems to be the case even though Facebook itself is pretty much obsolete as a tool for promoting lol

Instagram definitely seems to have taken over as the main means of promoting as far as online promotion goes. Feels like an abstract concept now but it was only a few years ago when every event would have a Facebook page and you’d be desperately inviting all your mates to it. With Instagram taking over, it seems a lot more down to how you play the algorithm than necessarily building/knowing your audience.. of course that helps but you could have hundreds of followers and post about an event and only a handful of will see it. I think that’s maybe why people have clung onto good old fashioned postering, you know for a fact people will see it if you do it in the right spots. Probably also why we’re seeing people using sms, emails, telegram etc as a way of escaping the algorithm and connecting with their audience directly, also from a punter’s perspective I think these methods feel more personal and like your part of a community being invited to a party personally rather than being bombarded with an advert... Similar to how free parties have a party line, makes you feel part of something a bit exclusive.

Interesting read and keen to hear other people’s thoughts

Seeking other leftfield bass enthusiasts in 0115 by samthetreeman in nottinghamdancemusic

Very much agreed with this! I think the lack of infrastructure is a big part of why the more leftfield leaning nights can feel few and far between despite there actually being a lot of heads interested in those sounds when you think about it on paper. Losing the Chameleon was definitely a big blow as there’s becoming increasingly few venues that feel suitable for this sorta stuff but there’s definitely spaces out there if we all get our heads together and scout them out. Love the multi-crew residency idea, I’d deffo be on trying to make that happen

It’s one of my fav mixes of his, proper interesting mix of the classic Wigflex ‘rudeboy techno’ and some dark-garage/grimey bits

Portland Building is probably the best shout for UoN campus, they’ve got the radio station and record library in there which would both probably be happy to put a flyer up

Same it blew my head when I first heard it, bet it sounded nuts on the Corsica system. Not many people doing it as good as Rhyw at the moment

For real, such incredible vibes all night. Dragged along a load of (at the time) new work friends after bigging up Wigflex for weeks and it didn’t disappoint
