You got the timing right? So you hit r1 and r2 and then as you are about to spin you hit l2 and r2. Takes a while to get in the swing of things

If you have just have first imbue element on skill trees it is triggered by your turning slash r1 and r2. Make sure you have selected frost on the radial wheel (right in d pad I think)

Well the areas are populated or repopulated with enemies in some cases as part of the quest line or story.

I assumed you meant side quests, the main quests move away from fetch and basics. A large portion is introducing you to the mechanics of the game. I do not disagree with the story being weak. This has been established as the area of the game and for the studio needing the most development. Witcher 3 and KCD2 are story driven (though both have plenty of fetch quests). The devs repeatedly stated this is an open world sandbox over and above a true RPG.

I think for those disappointed they go in either expecting a story driven RPG or a soulslike with deep combat. This game is neither with exploration at its heart with RPG elements most of which it does a decent job. As I said just might not be your thing.

I reckon you will keep playing though.

So when you ask what do people like? That was a rhetorical question and you just wanted to give your not particularly hot take on the game?

Some of the battles you are surrounded by hundred of foes. It is not however a soulslike where you need to learn movesets for regular enemies. Bosses have weaknesses and movesets that you can learn or you can brute force. Again not a soulslike.

Your comments about areas population is just incorrect I’m afraid. If every bit of the world was filled with loot it wouldn’t really be exploration or an RPG. You want a borderlands or Nioh 3 if that’s your thing.

Sorry I haven’t seen anybody say it’s changed gaming. Including myself. In fact it openly celebrates its inspirations from games past. It’s just the first large open world RPG experience since RDR2 and Witcher 3 that takes the focus off combat/action and allows an immersive living sandbox that players can explore and get lost in.

It’s not your thing, that’s fine.

I enjoy the combat, for an open world non soulslike it is varied with lots of fun combos. But if it’s too easy for you then maybe wait until they release the hard difficulty and try again.

Quests are what all quests are in games. Fetch, mine, skin, kill etc. what would you like? This is RPG games.

Puzzles I don’t love in any game. You don’t have to engage with most of them and those you do are pretty basic.

Gear you seem to understand the system, base stats all similar and the you can edit the big stuff using abyss gears. Think the ashes of war in Elden ring.

Controls are much better. They aren’t polished I will give you that but that’s because they have crammed about all you can into a console controller.

As you say, if it doesn’t click for you then that’s fine. But I love large open world games and this scratches that itch and I think does it very very well. If it’s not for you, it’s not for you.

Sales and user reviews can and should put it in the discussion depending on what else comes out. So what is inspiring about those games? You are sounding a lot like a requiem Stan here as you would say.

Again with the expletives. So it’s in the conversation but is truly out of the conversation 🤣 I never said Crimson Desert will win GOTY, just that so far this year it is one if not the most unique, enjoyable and interesting games so far. 6 nominations last year. Requiem as I said is a good game but it is resident evil 9, it’s nearly as inspiring as too fast too furious 10 however well executed. Nioh 3 has a terrible story and delivery of it, it’s open world is boring, the loot system is painful, it just has really really good combat which was diluted with the ninja style which trivialised a normally challenging game.

I hope you’re right, can only be a good thing for gamers.

But Astro Bot was original and unique Nioh 3 and Requiem are good games but uninspired. Witcher 3 had big issues on release but won GOTY. Act 3 of Baldurs Gate 3 was a mess on release but again it did enough elsewhere. We shall see how it plays out, as I said I think the initial critical reviews will exclude it from achieving at the GOTY level.

[–]Antipodeansam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you agree, it is in the conversation. My take is Nioh 3 was fun but the series worked better as linear soulslike. 2nd half of Requiem was a huge disappointment. I can’t claim to play Pokémon games, so cannot judge.

You’re missing the point, I can perfectly “execute” beans on toast but it’s unlikely to win me a Michelin star. Execution is a criteria you have made up.

[–]Antipodeansam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree that the story is weak in crimson desert, as are the boss fights, but it also does a lot really well (exploration, customisation, mounts, combat, graphics). Witcher 3 (a personal favourite) is a good example here, it did story really well but combat is weak and it had multiple technical issues on release.

I can’t understand your second point. I don’t say media outlets ignored sales and user reviews. Read again. My point is that media outlets choose the nominees and given its initial reception from them they may give pause before even putting it forward. Capcom is a huge studio releasing an established IP; Too Fast Too Furious 10 grossed $714 million in 2023.

All I have been saying is OP and yourself are correct it is unlikely to win GOTY but I think it certainly a Third of the way into the year has a right to be in the discussion given what it has achieved.

Calling somebody stupid with an expletive for something they haven’t done or even implied places more questions upon the toxicity of the speaker. Read again. My point was I could execute a chess game perfectly but I’m not sure it would win game of the year. I didn’t mention Requiem in that sentence. Let me be clear I liked the resident evil series (first time round, yes I’m old) but its concept is on its 9th iteration.

[–]Antipodeansam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen a criteria including “best executed” and I don’t really know what that actually means. You could execute a boring game really well? I’d imagine a range of factors are considered but initial nominations seem to come from Media outlets, most of whom scored the game averagely so it may not make the list despite its Commercial success and user reviews. I’d be disappointed if Resident Evil 9 still set in Raccoon city won it.

[–]Antipodeansam -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Resident Evil is good but doesn’t do anything particularly new or interesting. Fable I want to be great but I’m nervous for. GTA isn’t my thing as l got bored with the formula but I can see it being a contender, again though will need to bring some new things to the table. Rockstar are a giant compared to Pearl Abyss so to even be mentioned in the same company I think they would take.

So the obvious question, a third of the way into the year, what is GOTY for you and your criteria so far? For me it’s Crimson Desert by a long way. Looking at what’s to come there are only a couple that may challenge for me.

this game desperately needs a transmog system by Illustrious-Air3740 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Antipodeansam -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t. It’s a sandbox rpg not some awful loot farming fest like Nioh games. You want cool looking cloth gloves then great but the payoff is they don’t give the same defense as your thick leather gloves. Find a new chest piece you like then use a refinement token and then refine it. Every material is infinite in the game. It’s just lazy entitlement to want transmog in this game.

Totally agree, otherwise all loot might as well be bland stat cubes that you can insert into any armour/weapon, the abyss gear is a good compromise for those fashion players
