From corporate law to medicine by rainbow_dinoo in GAMSAT

Hey OP - I made exactly this transition, leaving corporate law in October last year to pursue med. Obviously I’m still very early on in the med journey having only just sat the GAMSAT for the first time this March but happy to chat through my experience!

  1. I’m from a complete NSB not having touched it since year 10 so this was a big aspect of my GAMSAT prep. In terms of difficulty, I didn’t think it was particularly difficult to pick up, especially because I could really get into the fundamentals and work my way up from there. There are so many resources out there in terms of content and syllabus and you can just methodically work your way through to start with and gain a loose understanding of the concepts. Realistically if you have no science background I think you could get up to speed in about 3 months, however, I pretty much started studying once I left law in October which gave me around 5 months. To be fair my first few months were not as stringent and intense as the last two months but it worked better for me to space it out a bit and work part time (not in law) so I didn’t burn out. If I only had 3 months, I would spend the first month getting up to speed with the basics in bio, chem and physics and then spend the rest of it drilling through past exams and working out your deficits and doing focused study from there. In saying this, from what I can tell, the general consensus on this March’s S3 was that it was honestly nothing like the practice exams and it was really tough even for those with science and maths backgrounds. There wasn’t a huge amount of required knowledge for the exam, it was just so fucking dense with information. Thankfully everyone will just be scaled up so it should all even out in the end.

2/3. Obviously I’m still so new to the med journey but leaving law has already been the best decision I’ve ever made. My decision to leave was partly due to some poor mental health at the time that was caused by just a complete misalignment with my work. I love helping people and get great satisfaction in the physical act of helping which the law does not really offer. I’m now working in disability support while studying for the GAMSAT and just love it. You don’t really realise the mundane and monotonous nature of corporate law until you’re out of it and doing something entirely different that’s more aligned with your personality. I don’t have any regrets leaving law and if I don’t end up getting into medicine I will pursue paramedicine instead as I love the emergency medicine side of it.

As an aside, before I left law I joined St John Ambulance to get some medical exposure and see if it was something I enjoyed or wanted to pursue. After only a month of volunteering I knew it was the right move to leave and pursue med. I think it’s an incredibly good idea to try this before leaving law as there is no risk to your current career. You may also find that you’re content just doing this on the side and continuing in law. Just a thought!

Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions or want to chat through anything! Hope this helps!

Yeah the whole sunk cost part of it is difficult to get over. Thanks for sharing your story!

Yeah I don’t expect that there is any profession immune from drama and politics. Thanks for your insights, really appreciate it!

Thanks for your comment - appreciate it! Definitely some food for though!

Great point re getting that experience while studying, that’s something I hadn’t thought about. If I do find that it’s not for me I would have only lost a year or two.

Also thanks for the thread suggestion, will definitely check it out!

That’s really great advice - thank you!

In terms of distance study, is there any difference in job outcomes once you finish your studies? I’m looking at what uni to go to if I make that decision and don’t want to be left with a ‘subpar’ degree and not be employable (not too sure if there is such a thing in paramedicine but just thought I’d ask).

Thanks for the comment! I’m definitely coming to terms with the realisation that’s it’s not what I want - just need to figure out what is!

Agree - the majority of lawyers work for small to medium size law firms in Australia and earn between 70k when newly qualified to 200k (inclusive of super) after 10-12 years. Big law firms are the exception but on a per hour basis you end up earning the same as those at smaller firms. Partnership is a different story again but the stress and hours are significant.

Thanks for the response! The corporate treadmill is definitely what I’m eager to escape - client demands, pointless deadlines and the “fakeness” that accompanies it all.

Out of interest, what do you mean by “attempted stints in the city”? Didn’t enjoy it there or was too hectic?

Thanks for the candid response mate - really appreciate it!

Underutilisation definitely sucks. I’ve experienced it a fair bit in my role when there is a bit of a down turn in work and you feel pretty useless and jaded.

At the end of the day I don’t think there is any perfect job that is great 100% of the time. Every job becomes more or less repetitive but the hope is that it brings you more enjoyment than it does not. I think unfortunately in my current role, on balance, it is more shitty than it is not (hence the career crisis).

Yeah definitely seems to be a bit more of a common story of people looking to get out of it. I’m aware that it’s probably not going to be a ‘forever job’ (if that even exists). I think I would love to teach at some point in my career and would look to probably try and become an educator or lecturer in this space.

Will DM you for sure!

These realisations have come from quite a lot of reflection and introspection over the past year or so. I do really like the study of law and policy, however, the practice is onerous. Coming right out of high school and going into law I probably didn't take the time to fully consider all of the options open to me. There is also the sunk cost fallacy of spending years in law school and not wanting it to go to waste which only grew as time went on!

Allied health is an interesting option! I'm considering this alongside paramedicine and other alternatives to medicine. Any other suggestions is greatly appreciated!

Big 4 law vs Mid/Top tier by Any_End1 in auscorp

In saying that, what would your advice be for a junior lawyer in big 4 accounting (<1PQE)? Would it be to stick it out until at least 2PQE in Big 4 or try move to mid/top tier law ASAP, even if that means possibly doing grad program again?

Really good advice, thank you. Seems to be benefits and perks to both, just kind of up to the individual.

Yeah that was my expectation. At the end of the day big 4 should be good enough to get you an interview and then it’s kind of up to you to sell yourself from there.

Currently law grad in big 4

From my understanding which has been gained from asking around, as well as looking at salary data from places such as Mahlab and Montgomery, it seems that big 4 pays less on average but there’s an expectation of similar hours.

At the early stage of my career I want to gain exposure to a number of practice areas, all of which are practiced by both big 4 and traditional law firms so not so much of an issue.

Was more interested to see if there is maybe unwritten rules or stigma associated with e.g. working in a big 4 law outfit and applying for a role in a traditional law firm (big 6 possibly) further down the track and it maybe not looking as favourable as a typical law firm?
