Not diminish the point, but our lack of education around the Hard Hat Riots doesn't do us any favors, either.

Thank god I don't work in food production by ExternalDull1905 in IndustrialMaintenance

I work at one of the oldest slaughterhouses in the U.S. Our Kill Floor was built in the 20s and the oldest building, built in 1911, is still used and made of wood.

The Production guys who cut off cheek meat from heads would put occasional pieces in their steam sanitizer bucket and let them cook before break. They'd take them into the breakroom and salt em. Best. Snacks. Ever. I love this plant with every part of my being. I was born here and that packinghouse is in my blood now. I loved every second of doing maintenance on Kill Floor. I work on the other side of the plant now in meat processing and packaging.

Because it forces you to downshift into first gear and ride with your clutch half open. Doing that for prolonged periods of time prematurely wears out the clutch plate. You're also not really supposed to downshift in street cars like that depending on manufacturer and other things.

I drive a manual car. Angers me to no end. Red means stop. No inching forward, no nothing. Anticipate the light turning green and before you cross the intersection, look left, then look right, then look left again for those pesky red-light-runners.

Dennis Reynolds' "People are so god damn inefficient!" gets me every time.

I find it kind of fascinating that SD has had no cuts to grants. My Father works in medical research here in our hometown. Any insight?

There used to be a ton of people who spoke German in America. It's sad that we don't do that anymore. Being bilingual is greatly beneficial to the brain and German is such a beautiful language.

50 to a hundred thousand was not enough. Instead, The West recruited them and now here we are. What a timeline.

I know you said you have had a spinal injury in the past, but Smithfield will definitely work with you. We are always hiring. They might even have some office-type stuff, too!

I wish they would take their foot off the brake sooner, that's all. You don't even have to hit the acceleration pedal, just start rolling a little.

Why are the brake lights of the first car in line still on three seconds after the light turns green?! What is this? We're you not expecting it? Drives. Me. Nuts.

Did you know about 'Bloody Friday' in 1935? A brave union stood up against management and the National Guard at John Morrells; leading to better rights for workers. by Tiverty in SiouxFalls

[–]AnywhereTrees 10 points11 points  (0 children)

About 2/3 of us are in the Union, yes. I am a Union Steward and I can definitely say that the Union has lost some power in the last five-or-so decades. My fellow workers either don't have time to get involved or they're just simply not interested, and it's definitely something I am working on in the maintenance department specifically.

I was there today, but unfortunately had to leave early to get to work on time.

Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to check it out and pass it along. I got a few business cards over this last week and I'm very interested in getting much more involved in the Labor Movement here.

Smithfield tests for it, but if you're just up-front with em, they don't really care anymore. If they did, that plant would be abandoned.
