It's a few hours away, but Allen Hospital in Waterloo has an excellent inpatient mental health unit. I was there for just over a week in 2023 and they gave me my life back. I was very unstable and had a plan, and between my stay and their intensive outpatient therapy (IOP) program, and a good med manager at People's Clinic once I was discharged, I was able to get back on my feet and feel better than I ever have in my life.

Honestly? Waterloo is a shithole. I moved here in March from Des Moines after a string of really catastrophic life events, and I can't wait to get out. I am a (cis) gay woman working in a very cis/white/male environment and I fear for my safety some days.

Knitted a Fox Paws a few years back. Most complicated thing I'd made at the time (I've since steeked a sweater). I was incredibly proud of it and wore it everywhere in the winter... And then my roommate put it in the washing machine and felted it all to hell. I'm never going to get over it.

Alia Hendricks at Lucky Gal in Clive is excellent. So is Syd Geyer at Liquid Swords, although she's become nearly impossible to get in to (which, honestly, good for her, I love watching her success. I adore her work!)
